Goodbye Ryan McMahen, We Hardly Knew Ye

With the trade yesterday for Abe Thompson, the Wizards had to make room on their senior roster for him. To make room, the Wizards waived 3rd year midfielder, Ryan McMahen. Most of you are probably saying "Who?", well I'm going to give you some information on what McMahen's been doing with us the past almost 3 years.

The Wizards drafted McMahen in the second round of the 2006 Supplemental Draft, the 16th pick overall. McMahen was a regular on the All Big Ten at Michigan State, and finished his career there with 23 career assists.

His first season with the Wizards, McMahen played in only 2 competitive games, both the Wizards Open Cup games. He played the full 90 minutes in the Wizards 2-1 win over the Des Moines Menace and played 74 minutes in the Wizards 0-2 loss to Chicago. McMahen missed the entire 2007 season due to a torn ACL.

This season, McMahen had only appeared in 2 games for the Wizards, again, both in the Open Cup. He started and played 65 minutes against the Carolina Railhawks before making way for Claudio Lopez. Against Seattle, he came on as an 83rd minute sub for Jonathan Leathers. McMahen was one of the first 5 penalty takers in that game, scoring on his opportunity. So his competitive career with the Wizards finished with 4 games played (3 starts) and 266 minutes played, all in the Open Cup.

Most of his time with the Wizards was spent playing with the reserves. In reserve competitions, McMahen played in 20 games, starting 17 getting 3 goals and 2 assists while racking up 1452 minutes.
