Ticket "Fun"

With Sporting Park hosting MLS Cup on December 7th the process for purchasing tickets started fairly early. Just an hour after the game ended, season ticket holders who had purchased the three game playoff package could purchase their ticket for the final using their credit for the play-in game that was not used. Other season ticket holders had to wait until today to begin the purchasing process. And today is where the fun started.

First, the KC Cauldron put up their allotment of tickets for the Members' Stand up for sale at 10am. Just before 10am, their site started to move slower. Right at 10am, according to the Cauldron, 3,000 carts were initiated with tickets, well over the 500 that they'd been allocated. From reports that I read from friends on Twitter, it took minutes to navigate a single page. By 10:30 all the tickets were gone, although it seemed like if you hadn't been on right at 10am you were not getting tickets.

This lead to a loud gnashing of teeth from many members of the Cauldron, some who had tickets in their cart for check out, only to be told that the tickets were all gone as they attempted to check out from the site. So much so that the Cauldron felt that they needed to put out a statement regarding the issues today (linked above).

Then at noon today, the season ticket holder pre-sale started. This was for all season ticket holders that had not purchased the playoff package, giving them a chance to purchase their ticket(s) for the final. That code, given to Season Ticket Holders was unique for each ticket account. As the day went on, another code was posted on the net that allowed a number of fans to go in and get tickets. Fans were apparently able to use that code to make purchases, even if they didn't have season tickets and allowed them to purchase anywhere in the stadium. This included a number of Real Salt Lake fans that were able to buy tickets using the code.

Since then, the code has been declared invalid and ALL tickets purchased using the code have been canceled with refunds being distributed.

This announcement throws a giant wrench into a number of people's plans, including RSL fans who had already gone and purchased these tickets. It could also cause a number of problems with the secondary market, where a number of the tickets purchased today using that code are already up for purchase. The question remains though where originally the code came from and how it was valid. As I mentioned earlier, the sale today was only for Sporting KC STH.

So with under two weeks to go, the ticket situation has turned into a giant, confusing, cluster f*ck, not just for Cauldron members, but for season ticket holders, RSL fans, and other KC fans as well.

Sporting Season Tickets Sold Out

Sporting Kansas City announced today that the club has sold out of season tickets for the 2013 season and created a waiting list that fans can get onto in hopes to join the list next year.  Sporting KC capped the season ticket told at 14,000 of the 18,467 capacity Sporting Park.  Since the start of last season, Kansas City has sold out 19 of 20 league home games.  According to the team release, Sporting leads the league in total number of new season ticket holders and over the last 3 years the team has averaged over 90% renewal rate, a fantastic effort.  Considering the team had under 500 season ticket holders at one time, this is an amazing turn around and just shows the huge effort that has gone into building this team up in the city (and it also shows what a winner can do).

Season Ticket Renewal and Transfer Window

Today season ticket holders started to receive renewal information in the mail for tickets for the 2013 season.  Sporting did come up with a unique way of doing season ticket renewal, setting up a new "dating" website for renewals, Love and Sporting a great idea to at least add some spice to the renewal process.  Prices for season ticket holders haven't gone up that much, if at all, in some sections.  The largest increase was $2 in the Cauldron and East Stand midfield.  Still some of the best value in the city for Sporting events.

There is still a renewal bonus, although not as good as last years where season ticket holders could get a trip to the Victory Suite.  This year, they'll be invited to a tailgate in the Sprint plaza for the season opener.

Deadline Day Transfer Falls Through

Earlier today, Thad Tweeted some information about a potential deadline day signing for Sporting KC.  A foreigner player that KC was close to signing but was unlikely to come off.  He mentioned that the player had agreed to the deal, but there was a requirement of Sporting KC from another party that KC had not met that was holding up the deal.

Then later tonight on Twitter, Robb Heineman tweeted that they hadn't been able to get the deal done.  The deal had apparently been for Javi Guerra, a 30 year old Spanish forward who has scored 46 goals in 80 games for Spanish second division side Real Valladolid.

So KC was looking to at least attempt to help with the scoring issues that they are currently having by trying to bring in Guerra, but with the deal falling through and the transfer window close to closing, KC would need to look for a free agent, or look to trade within MLS to assist with their scoring troubles.  I know it's not entirely what fans wanted to see/hear today most people were hoping for a signing to come in and assist with the goal scoring for Sporting KC.  And while people may not be happy that they haven't signed someone, hopefully there's a little bit of hope with the fans that they at least were trying to sign someone to help with Kansas City's scoring woes.

Still as of the end of the day today, Kansas City is now one of only three teams that do not have a designated player.  They are the only team in the Eastern Conference without one as the other two without a DP are San Jose and Colorado.

Tickets for the Open Cup

It's been about 24 hours since Sporting KC clinched their spot in the US Open Cup final this year.  And this morning tickets went on sale for Sporting KC season ticket holders for the game at 10am.  By noon, only 2 hours after tickets had gone on sale, Robb Heineman announced on Twitter that 8,186 tickets had been sold for the game already.  That was only 300 less than the announced attendance for yesterday's semifinal in Philadelphia at PPL Park.  That is also only 703 less than came to the 2004 US Open Cup final when KC drew 8,819 against the Chicago Fire.  That's only through KC's current season ticket base buying their seats.  Starting Monday, season ticket holders will be able to purchase extra tickets starting at 10am.  Tuesday at 10am the remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public.

For the visiting team in the finals, the Seattle Sounders, they were originally allocated 100 tickets like most visiting teams to Livestrong Sporting Park.  That amount was expand to 220 fairly quickly.  From a quick check of the Emerald City Supporters website, there are only 90 left in their allocation.  At this time there is no word on whether that amount will be expanded, but I'd expect Seattle fans to buy some tickets once they go on sale to the general public on Tuesday.  Rumors on Twitter today were that the Sounders were trying to get 1,000 tickets allocated for the finals.  Personally I can't really see Seattle getting 1,000 tickets at Livestrong, even if it is for a cup final.  Mainly because of the fact that with the number of season ticket holders KC has and where they're located, unless Sporting moves some of their existing season ticket holders, annoying and potentially pissing off some of the people that regularly put money into the team, there isn't really a way to put 1,000 away supporters in one location. 

Both sides have come up with the same idea to try to get more of their fans in.  Some KC fans have suggested buying up the rest of the Seattle allocation and donating them.  On the other side, ESC members are saying they should buy up the general ticket allocation to "show KC how real fans support their team away!"  Both sound like overly ambitious plans.  Either way, just under a month away, this will be a very well attended game and should be a big party as Seattle chances a historic 4th straight USOC title, while KC looks for their first trophy since 2004.

Live For It

That's the campaign for Sporting KC this season, "Live for It". The team debuted their commercial last night during the Grammy Awards. The team will be advertising with the commercial (another that will debut during the season opener), along with online, outdoor, print, and radio. The team will be doing billboards around the city, the billboards will include two of Sporting KC's newest national team players, CJ Sapong and Graham Zusi. Later ads that will go up will include Matt Besler and Jimmy Nielsen.



The big conspiracy that's popped up with the announcement is the fact that Teal Bunbury is not being included in the ads. There's likely nothing in the conspiracy, but it is interesting that two guys that had been part of last year's campaign (and are still with the team) are not involved in this year's campaign as both Bunbury and Kei Kamara are not featured. Again, there is likely little to nothing to it, but it's certainly gotten plenty of people talking like it means something.

Cauldron Tickets Sell Out

The Cauldron sold out of their allotment of tickets to the home opener in about 25-30 minutes. An amazing feat for the section. I'm still absolutely amazed at the growth of the section over the past few years. Hell when I joined in 2004, only about 8 years ago, the section was 25-30 people, 100+ was a really good night. Now the section is 2000 every single game without a problem. Selling the 300 that they had tonight in a span of 30 minutes is just a huge sign of the growth.

Tickets are currently on sale for season ticket holders to get extra tickets to the first 8 games. Sporting members get their shot later this week. And Friday they go on sale to the general public.

Sporting KC Announce Single-Game Ticket Sale Date

Today, Sporting KC released information regarding the sell of single-game tickets. Starting next week, the team will start selling single game tickets to the team's first 8 home games. Games against New England, Dallas, LA, Real Salt Lake, Montreal, San Jose, Toronto and Chicago. Tickets will begin to go on sale starting February 13th for season ticket holders. Their presale will last until Wednesday the 15th at 10am. Starting at 10am on Wednesday a presale will begin for "Sporting Club Members". Their presale will end the 16th at 10am. Finally on Friday, February 17th, tickets will go on sale to the general public.

So you have 3 different release dates for tickets depending on what your status is (Season ticket holder, Sporting Club Member, or general public).

Season Ticket Renewal Starts

Today Sporting Kansas City announced the beginning of their season ticket renewal process for the 2012 season. The team has put out the pricing as well as the renewal process. Overall, pricing as a whole isn't increasing by much at all as a whole, in fact for some it is going down. The Member's Club price is going down from $280 to $260, the East Stand midfield and it's sun issues is going down $40 from $700 to $660. The West Stand has the biggest drop with a $100 drop from $800 to $700. The East Stand pricing is staying at $500 as is the West Stand goal line at $600. The South Stand is seeing a $20 increase from $360 to $380 and the Stadium Club price is increasing $150 from $1,250 to $1,400. The team has also added two new price areas, the East Stand Goal Line for $400 and the Budweiser corner for $1,200.

The ticket pricing again for this season is based on a 20 game season. So it would seem likely that we'll once again see a 17 game league season with 3 special games as we had this year. It's not surprising that it appears that MLS is moving away from the balanced schedule next year.

Renewing early also has it's incentives. Rewnew in full before Tuesday, September 6th, and you get your choice of a game in the Budweiser Stand or a pass for you and a guest to the Victory Suite, along with your choice of Access Packs. The two access packs are set up for people that renew using the payment plans. Pack A is shield club access for a game and scoreboard recognition, while Pack B is VIP access on the field for warm ups, and your photo on the field. All of these incentives are for the 2012 season.

While the overall price as gone down some, the price as a whole is going up for most. When you try to renew, along with the basic price of your season tickets (as listed above), there is $40 in service charge and Village West Tax. The service fee is understandable, last year the service fee was $10 to $20 depending on what renewal process you used. So that takes care of probably $20 of the $40, but what about the Village West Tax. It appears that the Unified Government and Village West now tax events at the Legends area with a $1 per ticket charge. So for example, I'll be paying $300 for my tickets in the Member's Stand next year. But that's basically what I paid last year after you factor in the $20 service charge I paid with my installment plan that I did. Still it's interesting that there's been a new tax added to events at Village West. That's something that could certainly cause some issues in the future. It'll be interesting to see if KC can keep or even expand their current base of over 11,000 season ticket holders.

Inside the Stadium

This past week, season ticket holders had their first opportunity to go inside the stadium on tours and hear from both Robb Heineman and Dave Ficklin as they answered questions about the stadium itself. Unlike the Bannister site where I could stop by on my way home from work it's been harder for me to get inside the stadium in it's location. So Saturday was my first opportunity to really get inside the stadium. I'd heard from talks with Thad at The Back Post, and James at KCWFans.com about how great it was inside. So I was excited to finally get inside myself and I was not disappointed. I didn't the indepth tour that they've previously gotten (I hope to sooner than later). I took a few photos of the event from different locations around the stadium and there are certainly isn't a bad spot in the stadium judging by the views that I saw. It truly will be one of, if not the best stadium in the league and I'm absolutely looking forward to when it opens.

I had planned this post to be a bit of an uplift after the Seattle game, but unfortunately other commitments got in my way and it's a nice addition to the win last night against Chicago. Here's the rest of the photos I got.

Don't Expect the Playoffs Next Year

Next year is supposed to be a banner year for the Wizards with the biggest news being the opening of the teams new stadium out at the Legends. Today season ticket holders got the chance to take a look inside the stadium for the first time on a tour. And while that's big news in and of itself, the biggest news came from comments made by Robb Heineman to season ticket holders. The first set of news being that the Wizards are not planning on having any games at CAB or at Arrowhead next season, that any home games in KC will be at the team's new stadium. That means until the stadium opens the Wizards will be playing on an extended road trip.

Historically this isn't going to turn out well for the Wizards. The last team to start the season on an extended road trip was 2003 when the LA Galaxy opened the season with 8 straight road games. The Galaxy pulled only 4 points from those 8 games. That season started in early April, the 2011 MLS season is starting on March 19th, so the Wizards could have somewhere around 12 games on the road to start the season. The 2003 Galaxy did happen to make the playoffs, but in a 10 team league. Add in another 8 teams and this road trip to start the season is likely to ruin any chance the Wizards had of making the playoffs before the season even starts. After this past weekend's loss to New York, the Wizards are 58-116-51 on the road, for a total of 225 points, so KC has averaged a point per game on the road in their history. But that's been with traditional 1-2 game road trips, at most 4, not somewhere around 12. For another comparison to the Galaxy and their run in 2003, the Galaxy are 79-105-43 in their history on the road, averaging 1.23 PPG on the road, and that's including 2003 where they went 0-9-6 on the road, and 0-4-4 to start the season, over a full half a point less than what they average throughout their history on the road. What in the Wizards history on the road has shown that KC is going to do any better than LA did?

Training in KC and then traveling every single week for a game isn't going to do anything but give the Wizards players tired legs and jet lag before they even play a "home game."

The reason I put "home game" in quotes is because of the fact that during the same event tonight Heineman said that the Wizards were toying with the idea of the Wizards playing "home games" at a neutral venue, potential expansion site. The sites mentioned were Phoenix, San Antonio, and Cleveland.

This is a horrible idea for the Wizards and specifically for Wizards season ticket holders. Instead of seeing 2 to 3 regular season games, season ticket holders are going to get meaningless friendlies with reserves playing at least a half, or US Open Cup games where the team won't take the competition seriously for their extra season tickets. The team stated in their season ticket holder renewal package that the prices of season tickets were for 20 games. I can't see the Wizards going back on that, because they'd have an even bigger uproar if they dropped the number of games but left ticket prices the same. But then they could pass it off as a savings and a lot of season ticket holders would be happier with the lower price.

So if that happens, then Wizards season ticket holders will have 5-6 "extra game" tickets instead of the 3 that they're currently slated to get. Even if the Wizards were to win the Supporters' Shield, that's only 2 playoff games at home, so that's 3-4 more games for games that will mean nothing or be a less than full team for their tickets. This is "my" team, this is KC's team, not Phoenix's, not San Antonio's, not Cleveland's, we went through this years ago and I never thought we'd have to see the Wizards play home league game in another city after the team was sold to OnGoal. Why should we give up a home game?

Season Ticket Prices

Last week the Wizards sent out season ticket renewal information to their existing season ticket holder base. Needless to say I've heard from a few fans who were surprised at how much the ticket prices went up. While most of the stadium seats don't have a real comparison at the Wizards current stadium in CAB, most fans outside the Cauldron are seeing a big increase in their season ticket price. Obviously part of the increase is due to the fact that MLS is adding 2 home games to each team's schedule, so that adjusts for part of it. But the rest is due to the opening of the new stadium. The only section in the stadium that didn't see a big increase, was the Cauldron (named the "Member's Stand" in the renewal pack, another subtle hint at a re-branding), which only saw an increase in price due to the extra games, the supporters' section price per ticket will remain $14 per game for season ticket holders. The next cheapest section is the other end line, which is $360, or $18 a game. The sidelines are obviously more expensive, with the midfield seats the most expensive, and the west stand being more expensive than the east.

As I said before I've heard plenty of fans complain, so what I did is I started comparing the Wizards ticket prices for next year to other teams' season ticket holder information that's come out. What I found is that of the teams I looked at, they had comparable prices to the Wizards, based on the areas I could find. Here's a look at a few of them, all prices are per game.

CONCLUSION - While the prices for the new stadium are certainly a big jump up from what Wizards season ticket holders have paid in the past, the information I've provided above basically shows that the Wizards are basically on par with many of the other teams in the league that currently have soccer specific stadiums. Particularly Philadelphia, where the Wizards are right around the average for Philly in every location through the stadium.

I know people are not incredibly happy about the prices (I'm not super thrilled about it myself as I'm currently entertaining the idea of moving out of the Cauldron), but we've been spoiled the past few years, both under the Hunts and then under OnGoal making the best of a bad situation at CAB. We've been paying one of the lowest prices for season tickets. Sure it's been affordable and easily accessible, but this wasn't going to last forever, especially with a new stadium. So while it's not the most well liked decision OnGoal has made it's one that matches up with the ticket prices other teams currently have for their soccer specific stadiums.

The thing I'm most disappointed in, and something I thought OnGoal could really set a nice precedent on, was bringing back some form of "youth" season ticket, because I have plenty of friends that bring their kids to games that could potentially be priced out with the rise in prices. I understand why they didn't do it, mainly because when the Wizards had it in the past, it was abused as adults used kids tickets to get in at cheaper prices. But with more and more scanners being used instead of just tearing the ticket stub, I think changes could be made to the system to allow a "junior" pass.

Wednesday News Catch Up

So tonight was the big game out at Arrowhead between Chivas and Club America. First I want to touch on a few other things.

Before the game tonight, the Wizards held a Season Ticket Holder Event out at the training facility that included dinner and a Q&A session with Robb Heineman about the new stadium plan out at the Legends as well as the plan out at Bannister. Here are a few highlights of the event.

• They had more renderings of the stadium tonight, see the picture above, for the full album and some pictures of the game tonight, see here.
• I hope they are old renderings, I really hate the wavy roof.
• The Cauldron end, which I would guess is under the scoreboard is smaller and doesn't appear to have much of a roof in those renderings.
• OnGoal has currently put $33 million into the development out at Bannister.
• They did sign an agreement with the Unified Government meaning they will not negotiate with KCMO for 30 days basically and the state of KS has 30 days from last week to approve the STAR Bonds.
• They'd been talking with places like Walmart, Lowes, Target, etc about building at Bannister, but those places are not looking to build new stores right now, and probably won't be til 2011-2012.
• With that in mind it'd probably be until 2013-2015 before the stadium at Bannister would be done.

Those were the main highlights of Heineman's Q&A tonight.

Onto other MLS news. The league announced today that they will take a break for a portion of the World Cup this next year. MLS will not play during the group phase of next summer's World Cup. I like this move, you don't want to have to compete with the biggest sporting event in the world, at least not all of it. Once the games become a little more spread out after the group phase, MLS will start back up again. The break will last 15 days, from June 11th to the 25th. It's a smart move by MLS to accommodate their fans who want to watch the World Cup.

Finally, onto tonight's game between Chivas and Club America. A great atmosphere tonight out at Arrowhead, where there was a decent crowd (not the 35,000 Robb predicted at the Q&A but a good number). Both team's started the game with their starters and after a scoreless first half, Club America grabbed the lead in the second. Chivas had an equalizer called back before scoring 2 unanswered to win 2-1. Again I have a few pictures here, as well as a short video on youtube.

Friendly at Arrowhead

This entire summer there have been big name clubs from around the world playing in the United States as part of their preseason. Unfortunately none of those games have been in KC. That looks like it will be changing in September. Rumor had been around that there would be a friendly at Arrowhead between Club America and Chivas de Guadalajara in September. Checking Ticketmaster today, the friendly is there on the site, although tickets for the game do not go on sale until tomorrow. So if you ever wanted to see two of the biggest clubs in Mexico play each other in a "friendly" here is your chance.

UPDATE: The Wizards have announced that the game will also double as Special Game B for Wizards season ticket holders. I'm not sure how I feel about that. I love the fact that we're getting some major international club teams in to play a friendly, but I wish they were playing the Wizards. I'm happy to see the game cause I love watching soccer, but I'd rather my Wizards season tickets be used for games involving the Wizards, they're the team I'd rather see play (even though they are playing horrible right now).

Season Tickets are Here!

I was a little worried whether the tickets would get here on time, but today on my front porch in a Priority Mail package, were this year's Wizards' season tickets. With it being only 3 days until the first game, I was ready to write a scathing write up about the lateness of the Wizards in getting the tickets out to Season Ticket Holders. Still, to an extent, I am upset that it took the Wizards this long to get the tickets out. Many of the teams have already sent their tickets out to fans, and sending them out the week of the first game is just begging for multiple fans to be calling the Wizards front office frantic wondering where their tickets are.

Overall, though, I'm happy with the look of this year's tickets. Not only did they come with my parking passes, they came with a folder with an electronic media guide and fact book, and while I'm a fan of the paper versions, this will still get plenty of use. Season Ticket Holders also got their membership card. Also included were pocket schedules, a pamphlet that has a picture of the stadium from the 3 Trails website and other bits of information on tickets, the 2008 season, and 2009 season.

As for the tickets, the Wizards did a cool think this year. While last year the team had put together a collage that spanned across tickets, this year the Wizards gave each ticket it's own theme. Each ticket has a picture representing the theme and included in the package was a sheet explaining each of the themes. Here is the list of the themes in order.

Wizards Lowering Ticket Prices

You don't see that headline very often in professional sports, a team dropping their ticket prices for season tickets, but that's just what the Wizards are going to be doing next year. As Wizards president Robb Heineman said in the article, "We understand that these are tough economic times". That's certainly a good reason to drop prices on tickets. The biggest drop in pricing, will be the field side reserve, which drop from $110 to $100 per game, stadium reserve drop .50 cents to $22 per game. Cauldron season tickets will drop $2.60 to $14 per ticket. The berm/section 100-103 season tickets will be $10 per ticket. The Wizards are also adding an all-you-can-eat section in section 106. This should certainly help all season ticket holders next season, good on the Wizards for taking this step.

Wizards Will Open Against United

For the second season in a row, the Kansas City Wizards will be opening against DC United. This time, though, the game will be in Kansas City. The game will be Saturday, March 29th at 7 pm central time at Community America Ballpark. This could also be the leagues first look at Juan Sebastián Verón, who looks like he could be signing with DC United this off season. There is also already talk from the Handball United fans of a road trip to KC for this game.

In other game news, the Wizards have announced the plan for how season ticket holders will choose their seats. In the first link I posted, the press release states how season ticket holders will be given a specific time next week to come out to CAB to choose where they will sit. As for the Cauldron, that location is still to be decided, although there are two options for where the group will be. For more on that discussion you can check out bigsoccer.com.
