Another Former Player Retiring - Former SKC Wizards Update

Another former Kansas City player will be retiring at the end of the current MLS season. One week after Jack Jewsbury announced he would be retiring at the end of the season, 11 year veteran, Tyson Wahl also announced that he would be retiring when the current MLS season ended. Wahl was drafted by the Wizards back in 2006 and was with the club for three years, finally starting to break into the lineup in 2008 when he split time as a starter with Aaron Hohlbein next to Jimmy Conrad. In the expansion draft at the end of the season though Wahl was selected by the Seattle Sounders and left Kansas City having made 32 league appearances. He proceeded to play for the Sounders, Montreal Impact, and Colorado Rapids before joining the Columbus Crew back in 2013.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Former SKC Wizards Update

Another week of former Wizards updates.  Lots of news outside of games for former Wizards.  Along with Roger Espinoza set to join the list of former Wizards, a number of former players are set to go into the reentry draft after being released from their MLS clubs.  Shavar Thomas and Tyson Wahl were already going to be entering that, and 3 more players today joined that list.  Will Hesmer, Khari Stephenson, and Kevin Hartman were all let go by their clubs.  Stephenson and Hesmer were not overly surprising.  Stephenson hadn't seen a lot of time for San Jose this year, while Hesmer was injured all last year and Andy Gruenebaum stepped up and proved to be a solid starter.  Hartman though was surprising, but does give Dallas cap room to play with now.  The other news regarding former Wizards is that Yura Movsisyan is being linked with a move to Spartak Moscow.  Movsisyan has denied the rumors, but Movsisyan could possibly be on the move this winter.  In other former Wizard news, Jamar Beasley has moved to Syracuse today, being traded by the Wichita Wings.  Here's the rest of this week's update.

Former Wizards Update

Back again with another week of former Wizards updates. First off, congratulations to Stephen Armstrong and John Wilson, two former Wizards who are on the Charleston Battery team that won the USL-2 title this past weekend, beating former Wizards Edson Elcock and Yomby William 2-1 in the final. Elcock got Richmond's goal in the losing effort. Also, congrats to Eddie Johnson who made Fulham's 25 man roster for the first half of the EPL season. Finally, Dave van den Bergh's whereabouts are known now, he's an assistant coach for the US U-20 team. Last week I posted a list and thanks to one loyal reader I do have more information on where a few players are, specifically Michael Kraus and Ofori Sarkodie, who are both back at school finishing up degrees. Wizards Lose Wahl to Seattle

Had this sent to me by email, but it's been confirmed by Ives that the Wizards lost defender Tyson Wahl to the Seattle Sounders. He was one of the players on my list that I thought the team could lose. Wahl started 16 games for the Wizards last season, splitting time with Aaron Hohlbein as Jimmy Conrad's partner in the center of defense. The loss of Wahl means that Hohlbein has to be the favorite to start next to Conrad next season.

Here's the full list of players taken by the Sounders.
Nate Jaqua (Houston), Brad Evans (Columbus), Stephen King (Chicago), Jeff Parke (New York), James Riley (San Jose), Khano Smith (New England), Jarrod Smith (TFC), Nathan Sturgis (RSL), Peter Vagenas (LA), Wahl (KC). Leaving Dallas, Chivas, Colorado, and DC as the teams that didn't lose a player.

Expansion Draft Time

It's almost time for another one of those wonderful expansion drafts. This year the 14 current MLS teams will help stock the Seattle Sounders FC. Today teams had to turn in their list of protected players to the league. The Wizards list has now been published on Hillcrest Road. The only surprise on that list is a big one, Carlos Marinelli. Marinelli, who the Wizards signed last season is on the protected list. The same Marinelli that was involved in a practice confrontation with Coach Onalfo. That's a bit of a head scratcher, that he was protected over Ivan Trujillo, but since most fans expect both gone next season it's not totally surprising. It should say a lot about Trujillo that Marinelli, with all his baggage, is being protected over him.

As for who could possibly be taken by the Sounders, here are the players the Wizards have left unprotected; Kevin Hartman, Aaron Hohlbein, Michael Kraus, Eric Kronberg, Matt Marquess, Rauwshan McKenzie, Kurt Morsink, Boris Pardo, Nelson Pizarro, Ryan Pore, Abe Thompson, Ivan Trujillo, Tyson Wahl, Lance Watson, and Kerry Zavagnin.

The fact that the Sounders Technical Director is former Wizards player and coach Chris Henderson could certainly play a roll in whether or not the Wizards lose a player. There are a few players on that list that would be favorites to be taken; Kevin Hartman, Aaron Hohlbein, Kurt Morsink, and Tyson Wahl. Hartman could be a target in a draft and trade scenerio, as LA is looking for a new keeper to lead the team and getting Hartman back would certainly be an improvement for the Galaxy. Hohlbein would make a good pick for the Sounders as well, as Hohlbein started almost half the Wizards games in the center of defense last season and could certainly start for the expansion Sounders. The same is true for Wahl, who partnered with Jimmy Conrad for the rest of the games last season. Morsink could be taken if he impressed Henderson during his time here as an assistant coach, he can play as a holding midfielder and at times has shown a very good ability at passing the ball.

For those interested, here is the full list of players exposed for each team.

What do you think of the Wizards list? Who are we most likely to lose? And remember either Trujillo or Marinelli had to be protected.

Weekly Player Interview

Thad has this week's player interview with Kerry Zavagnin up on his website. He also has an interview up with last week's winner of the player interview poll, Tyson Wahl.

With Zavagnin, Thad talks with him about the playoff chances for the Wizards, talking about the recent recovery of the team to get back into the playoff chase. In regards to his last home regular season game, he talks about his chances of playing and his recovery from an injury that's been nagging him. Zavagnin also touches on the fact again that he wants to coach, although he hasn't had any conversations on becoming a coach anywhere specific yet. He also takes time to thank the fans for their support of him the past 9 years in KC.

With Wahl, Thad talks with Wahl about having to mark up on Blanco a fw weeks ago and then having to mark Taylor Twellman this past week. Along with a look into marking up Scott Sealy on Saturday. He also talks about the competition between him and Aaron Hohlbein. As always it's good stuff from Thad in his interviews with the players.

Wizards Return to Arrowhead with Win

The Wizards returned to Arrowhead for the only time this season and came away with a big 2-0 win over the LA Galaxy. While last week seemed hopeless, this game, gives hope to the idea that the Wizards actually could make the playoffs this year. With 4 of the last 6 games at home, the Wizards can certainly put up a fight for a playoff spot, but will need help to get in.

As for last night, the Wizards made some lineup changes, the most notable was Claudio Lopez being moved to the bench for the first time in league play this season. The first half was a dull affair with neither team getting a whole lot of chances to really get on the board. The best chance for KC came when Josh Wolff played a 1-2 and then played a ball through to Abe Thompson, but Thompson's shot was scuffed and went right to Josh Wicks. LA's best chance came right before half, when Landon Donovan chested down a cross to Edson Buddle, who's side volley went off his shin instead of his foot and went over the goal. Before the whistle blew, the Wizards had another chance to take the lead, when Jack Jewsbury hit a shot from 25 yards out that Wicks couldn't handle. Thompson, though, couldn't get to the rebound in time and the rebound was cleared away.

The second half, the game started to pick up, first David Beckham just went wide with a shot. Then it was Herculez Gomez's turn. From about 25 yards out off a free kick, Gomez forced Wicks to push the ball wide. The break through came in the 67th minute. After a shot by Jewsbury was blocked, the Wizards remained patient, Davy Arnaud played the ball wide to Gomez, who crossed into the box where Wolff let the ball run through his legs before hittting the ball with the inside of his foot sending the ball by Wicks with the cheeky finish. A little over a minute after the first goal, the Wizards had doubled their lead. Arnaud collected the ball about 35 yards from goal, too a touch forward and let loose a screamer from 33 yards out that went into the upper 90 leaving Wicks with no chance. Arnaud was helped by the fact that Beckham laid back from going into a challenge on Arnaud. Still you can't take away from Arnaud's goal, which should easily be a goal of the year candidate. The Wizards held off the Galaxy fairly easily the rest of the way and sent the Galaxy to their 13th game without a win.

WIZARDS Man of the Match - Davy Arnaud - An absolute golazo for Arnaud last night and an assist as well, Arnaud is back to full fitness after surgery last offseason and has really started to show well, with goals in his last 3 matches to tie him with Jimmy Conrad for the team lead in goals in league play this season.

Honorable Mention - Jimmy Conrad, Tyson Wahl

More on Robinson-Wahl Situation

Houston Dynamo defender, Bobby Boswell, has posted on his blog about the events after Eddie Robinson elbowed Tyson Wahl. On the youtube video of the incident, it looks like Boswell steps on Wahl's leg after he'd gone down to the ground. Apparently the league also thought that Boswell had stepped on Wahl's leg, because he received a fine for it.

The fine, though, was removed after Boswell had a chance to talk with the Players Union and Wahl. No such luck for Robinson, though, as he's still suspended for Houston's next two games.

Eddie Robinson Suspended

Ives Galarcep and Hillcrest Road have the story, Houston defender, Eddie Robinson has been suspended 3 games and fined $1000 for the elbow that he landed on Tyson Wahl in the second half of the game against Houston last Saturday. Robinson deserves at least that much for the cheap shot on Wahl. Watch the elbow again in the video below from youtube.

Suspend Eddie Robinson

So I missed seeing this live, and without HDNet, I wasn't able to DVR the game. Someone, though, has gotten Eddie Robinson's cheap shot elbow on Tyson Wahl up on youtube. Before the ball is even played in Robinson clocks Wahl with an elbow, right to the face. Hopefully the league disciplinary office has seen the replay of this game and will be contacting Mr. Robinson letting him know he's suspended for a few games.

Wizards Defense Situation

Half of the Wizards back 4 that started most of the season is gone. And the Wizards went very defensive minded in the SuperDraft. Where does that leave the Wizards back line heading into 2008 preseason training?

With Nick Garcia and Jose Burciaga Jr gone, Jimmy Conrad is not the most seasoned Wizard on the back line. Captain Conrad, though, has shown his leadership throughout the years in KC and should do fine to teach many of the young defenders the Wizards have brought in. Jack Jewsbury and Michael Harrington, two players that saw plenty of time in the wing back positions during the 2007 season are also back. With it looking like a switch to a 3-5-2 being a very strong possibility, though, those two could be moved back up to midfield. Ryan Raybould will be starting his 4th season in KC, again switching back and forth from midfield and defense. The other two returning defenders, Aaron Hohlbein and Tyson Wahl will battle it out for a position in the center of defense. Hohlbein had a productive offseason, getting called into the U-23 camp for their trip to China.

The Wizards will have more competition at the back this season if all their draft picks sign, as the Wizards entire SuperDraft can play defense. The only two already on the team, Chance Myers and Roger Espinoza can take up positions on the right and left wing respectively. The other four drafted players, Yomby William, Jon Leathers, Matt Marquess, and Rauwshan McKenzie will all compete for time on the back line if they sign.

Overall, the Wizards are deep in the back, but unexperienced is an understatement. Jimmy Conrad is the only player with more then 20 professional starts on the back line. It would have been nice to have another experienced back, but that didn't completely hurt the team back in 2000, when Peter Vermes played center back with the inexperienced Brandon Prideaux and rookie Nick Garcia. We can only hope for the same results.
