Sporting Top New York

Sporting KC got their first win of their preseason yesterday against the New York Red Bulls 3-0. With the Red Bulls facing off against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday all of New York's starters have returned to New York to prepare for that game. That left the Red Bulls lineup with end of the roster players, trialists, and unsigned draft picks to take on Sporting KC.

Sporting started the game with what looks to be the club's starting 11 heading into the season with Graham Zusi at right back and Latif Blessing starting on the wing. KC controlled the game as expected with their starting 11 and created a number of chances but couldn't beat the Red Bulls defense. It took a foul by goalkeeper Rafael Diaz in the box on Dom Dwyer as he broke behind the Red Bulls defense to open the scoring. Dwyer stepped up to take the penalty and put it in off the post to put KC up in the 31st minute.

Sporting's starters stayed in the game through the half time break, playing a full hour, but were unable to extend their lead. After the full changes, Sporting's reserves continued to dominate the game, Daniel Salloi hit the cross bar in the 79th minute after some good work down the middle of the field. KC got their insurance in the 82nd minute when Salloi played a ball across the box towards Jimmy Medranda. The Colombian dummied the ball, letting it run through his legs to Cameron Porter who took a touch and fired a shot from a tight angle that beat goalkeeper Evan Louro high to make it 2-0. Four minutes later KC added a third as a corner by Medranda was flicked towards goal by a Red Bulls defender. Louro and Soony Saad both challenged for it, Louro got a touch on it but Salloi was following the play and headed the ball into the net to make it 3-0. Saad had a late chance to make it 4-0 in the 90th minute, his curlin free kick beat Louro, but couldn't beat the far post, where it hit the elbow of the goal.

The 3-0 win though was convincing, Sporting will finish up pool play of the Desert Diamond Cup on Wednesday against the New England Revolution.

Palmer-Brown and Salloi Return From Loan

Sporting KC announced today the official return of both Erik Palmer-Brown and Daniel Salloi from their European loans. Both players will be back with Sporting KC for preseason in 2017.

Palmer-Brown had been the first to go on loan, leaving Sporting KC for Portuguese power, Porto. Palmer-Brown quickly slotted himself into Porto's reserve team in the Portuguese second division and made 11 appearances for them as they won the second division championship. Palmer-Brown missed the start of the 2016-2017 season though with a foot injury. Palmer-Brown returned to play six games in league play as well as playing in the Premier League International Cup before another injury ended his time on the field with Porto with three games left in 2016.

Most fans thought that Palmer-Brown had been seen for the last time as a Sporting KC player as they expected Porto to come in with an offer to purchase the US youth international, especially after made the bench for the first team in the Portuguese Cup. Unfortunately Porto and Sporting never got to the final stages of negotiating his loan into a permanent transfer. There will be quick arguments to be made that Sporting KC got greedy with the proposed transfer fee as well as those that Porto were trying to get a cut rate deal from the MLS side, but the truth of the negotiations isn't known.

Palmer-Brown will now return to KC, for what may still be his final year in KC as he's reportedly on the last year of his contract. Even though he's return though Palmer-Brown may not spend a lot of time in KC, as the US U20 team will begin qualifying for this summer's U20 World Cup in February. Palmer-Brown is expected to feature for Tab Ramos' U20 team both in qualifying and in the World Cup this summer in South Korea should the US advance. This would see him miss plenty of time with the club and would certainly put him up in the shop window for a potential summer move to Europe if nothing comes up this winter.

Salloi returns to Kansas City after being loaned back to his home country of Hungary where he was first loaned to Vasas SC and eventually newly promoted Gyirmot SE, who are coached by former academy coach Istvan Urbanyi. Salloi struggled with a back injury during his time in Hungary, but still managed to appear in 13 games for Gyirmot. Unfortunately the newly promoted team struggled and by the winter break was rooted to the foot of the table. Salloi left the club as their leading scorer, having scored two goals in his 13 games with the club.

It will be interesting to see what happens with both players in preseason, Palmer-Brown certainly has the physical tools to challenge for a spot in KC's starting 11, but the question may be whether Peter Vermes gives him the chance to win it. Also whether Palmer-Brown checks out upon his return looking for a move to Euope. Salloi is also in an interesting position, especially with the injury in October last year to Diego Rubio. With a torn ACL, Rubio is likely out until at least the summer, which would mean that Salloi is once again in the position of likely being Dom Dwyer's back up. Salloi could get the chance to play meaningful minutes for KC if Sporting don't bring in another attacker.

Sporting's Homegrown Player Loans

Two of Sporting KC's four homegrown players spent all or part of the year 2016 on loan in Europe, Erik Palmer-Brown and Daniel Salloi spent 2016 in Portugal and Hungary playing with club's there instead of with Sporting KC. With 2016 close to coming to an end let's take a look at both players' time in Europe.

Palmer-Brown's loan to Porto in Portugal took place first, Sporting agreed to a loan move for Palmer-Brown during preseason for Sporting ahead of the 2016 MLS season. At the time he'd been expected to play a role for Sporting's USL side, the Swope Park Rangers in 2016, instead he got a move to Europe. It look Palmer-Brown about a month or so to get up to speed in Portugal, but once he did he became a regular starter for Porto B in the Portuguese second division. Palmer-Brown started 11 games for Porto B in the league as they won the Portuguese second division.

Plamer-Brown missed the start of the 2016-2017 season for Porto B as he suffered a foot injury that kept him out of action until the middle of October. Upon his return though Palmer-Brown again took his place in the starting lineup for Porto B. He started six games for Porto B in their league season as well as playing in cup competitions.

The biggest news for Palmer-Brown in the second half of 2016 came when he was called up on multiple occasions to train with Porto's first team. Late in his loan Palmer-Brown even made the bench for Porto's first time in a Cup game between Porto and Belenenses. Unfortunately Palmer-Brown didn't get on the field, but it showed the faith that Porto has in him as a player. Porto had their last game of 2016 on Thursday, but a hamstring injury has kept Palmer-Brown out for the last couple weeks.

The question now becomes whether Palmer-Brown will make the move to Porto permanent. The club has obviously been impressed enough with Palmer-Brown's work if he's getting called up to work with the first team and as a consistent starter for their reserve side. From reading some fan reactions, the fans are impressed with Palmer-Brown and are wanting Porto to make the move permanent as well.

It he doesn't go though Palmer-Brown's time in KC may still be short as other clubs could come in with an offer. The other thing is that he's likely to feature a whole lot for KC in the first half of the season. If he returns Palmer-Brown is likely to miss a good portion of preseason as U20 World Cup qualifying takes place in February and early March and the assumption is that Palmer-Brown would be on the roster for that tournament. Then if the US finishes as one of the top four teams in qualifying, they'll qualify for this summer's World Cup in late May and early June in South Korea. So if Palmer-Brown does return, don't expect him to jump right into Sporting's starting 11 either.

With Salloi, his loan didn't take place until about half way through 2016. Originally Salloi had been the only other striker on the team along with Dom Dwyer and ended up dressing for Sporting's first few games of the 2016 season until Diego Rubio took that spot over. With Rubio in the 18 for Sporting, Salloi went on loan to the Swope Park Rangers for the beginning of the USL season. He played in 10 games for the Rangers, starting six of them and leading the team in goals with four before his loan. Salloi's loan reportedly was because of his hopes of getting back into the youth national team picture for his country by playing in the local league.

Originally when the loan was announced back in June, Salloi was on his way to Vasas, a traditional power in Hungary. When the league kicked off in mid-July though there was no sign of Salloi on the field or on the bench for Vasas in Hungary. A few days after the league started it was reported that Salloi's loan had been switched from Vasas to Gyirmot for the rest of 2016. Gyirmot, a recently promoted side from the Hungarian second division, is coached by Istvan Urbanyi, a former Sporting Kansas City academy coach from around the time Salloi would have been in the academy. The move in that regard made sense for Sporting and Salloi, and going to a newly promoted club had a better chance of better playing time for Salloi.

Unfortunately the play hasn't gone Gyirmot's way all that much, they're currently rooted to the foot of the table in Hungary in 12th, seven points behind 11th place and seven points from safety right now, with by far the worst goal difference in the league at -23.

Salloi for his part has appeared in 13 of Gyirmot's 19 games before the winter break, starting 12 of them. He's also leading the team in scoring with two goals, but the club has only scored eight goals in their 19 games, less than a goal every other game.

The Hungarian league is on break until February now, so Salloi's loan is effectively finished for the time being. With Rubio out for the first half of 2017 at least, Salloi is once again the only other striker on the roster other than Dwyer. Unlike Palmer-Brown, a permanent move to Hungary doesn't seem likely given Gyirmot's position in the table, it'd seem unlikely that they would want to pick up Salloi permanently with relegation back to the second division looking highly likely at this point.

If I had to make a guess on who is back and who isn't in 2017, I think Palmer-Brown is likely gone, whether it be to Porto, or another team that saw him play while he was with Porto, I think Palmer-Brown makes the move to Europe in January. As for Salloi, I could see his loan extended through the end of the Hungarian season if Gyirmot and Urbanyi really want it, but I could just as easily see Salloi in KC for preseason looking to push for time or back with the Rangers battling Mark Anthony Gonzalez and Kharlton Belmar.

Another Former Player Retiring - Former SKC Wizards Update

Another former Kansas City player will be retiring at the end of the current MLS season. One week after Jack Jewsbury announced he would be retiring at the end of the season, 11 year veteran, Tyson Wahl also announced that he would be retiring when the current MLS season ended. Wahl was drafted by the Wizards back in 2006 and was with the club for three years, finally starting to break into the lineup in 2008 when he split time as a starter with Aaron Hohlbein next to Jimmy Conrad. In the expansion draft at the end of the season though Wahl was selected by the Seattle Sounders and left Kansas City having made 32 league appearances. He proceeded to play for the Sounders, Montreal Impact, and Colorado Rapids before joining the Columbus Crew back in 2013.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Bunbury, Kamara, Fall in US Open Cup Final - Former SKC Wizards Update

While Sporting Kansas City and the Vancouver Whitecaps were playing their CONCACAF Champions League game last night, two other MLS teams were competing in the US Open Cup final. FC Dallas and the New England Revolution played at Toyota Stadium in Frisco to decide who would succeed Kansas City as US Open Cup champions. Two former Sporting KC players were on the bench to start for their side as Teal Bunbury and Kei Kamara were both in the 18. Kamara was a first half sub, coming on for an injured Gershon Koffie. At the time Dallas was up 2-1, but went up 3-1 before the half time break. Bunbury was a second half sub, coming on with 21 minutes left, recording an assist on Juan Agudelo's second goal of the night to cut the lead to 4-2, but that's as close as the Revs would get.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Salloi Loan Switched to Gyirmot FC Gyor

Daniel Salloi won't be returning to Kansas City, but he won't be playing for Vasas FC either. Sporting KC announced today that instead of being loaned to that club for the rest of 2016,he will instead be going to newly promoted club, Gyirmot FC Gyor. The timing of the move is a little odd considering the Hungarian league just kicked off this past weekend. Salloi's new club tied their first game in the top division with a 2-2 draw with Mezokovesd.

While on the surface the move is a little confusing, it becomes clearer with the revelation that former Sporting KC academy coach, Istvan Urbanyi is now the head coach of Gyirmot. Urbanyi had been a Sporting academy coach from 2014 until earlier this year when he left the club and took over Gyirmot. With that in mind and the fact that Urbanyi would have coached Salloi when he was in the KC academy, this move makes a ton of sense. Hopefully Salloi can get himself plenty of game experience.

Sporting Loan Salloi to Vasas in Hungary

Sporting Kansas City announced today that they had loaned homegrown forward, Daniel Salloi back to his native Hungary to play for Vasas FC in the Hungarian first division for the remainder of the 2016 season. Salloi, who dressed for the first team in the first couple games of the 2016 season, has spent most of the season on loan to Sporting's USL affiliate, the Swope Park Rangers. With the Rangers Salloi has appeared in 10 games, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Recently though his playing time has decreased in the center forward position with the emergence of Mark Anthony Gonzalez, who is tied with Salloi for the team lead in goals with four. Add that in with the return of Dane Kelly from injury and Salloi seemed like he may find most of his time on the wing for the Rangers.

Signed in January as a homegrown player after spending the second half of 2015 playing with Ujpest FC on an amateur contract he'd scored seven goals and four assists over 16 games for the Hungarian club. He'll now return to the league for the 2016-2017 season in Hungary which starts in July. Vasas is a six time Hungarian league champion, but finished 10th last season in their first season back in the top level since the 2011-2012 season.

Salloi becomes the second homegrown player to currently be out on loan in Europe, joining Erik Palmer-Brown who is also on loan through the end of 2016 with Porto in Portugal.

There are certainly some questions that can be asked about this move for Kansas City. Was it made because Gonzalez and Kelly are seen as the primary options in the middle for Marc Dos Santos? Was Salloi just homesick and wanting to be closer to home at this point? Is he just not developing in the way that Peter Vermes would like him to? It seems awfully early to be the last of those questions considering he's been with the team for less than six months.

It also brings up questions about Sporting KC as a whole now, they now have an "off budget" roster spot opened up to sign a player, but at the same time have just two forwards on the roster, Dom Dwyer and Diego Rubio (no I'm not counting Jacob Peterson). With Rubio's lack of time combined with this move you have to assume and hope that Rubio is gone and that KC is close to, or has finalized something for another forward to come in and back up/challenge Dwyer. If not it would seem that Vermes hasn't learned anything from his experiences last year with a lack of impact substitutes on the bench.

Rangers Remain Unbeaten

The Swope Park Rangers continued their unbeaten start to their inaugural USL season as they picked up a 1-1 draw with fellow expansion side, San Antonio FC in their home opener. The Rangers were able to grab an early lead off a corner as the ball bounced around in the box it eventually fell to Sporting KC loanee Daniel Salloi who fired the ball past Josh Ford and into the net to make it 1-0 to the Rangers. San Antonio though controlled much of the game though and kept the Rangers pinned back in their own end. Danny Garcia was a big part of the San Antonio attack. Jon Kempin in the Rangers net came up with a number of big saves to keep SPR in front. Unfortunately San Antonio finally broke through in the 42nd minute. Garcia was played through on goal by Carlos Alvarez. As Kempin came off his line Garcia knocked it over him and into the net tying the game at 1-1.

The second half continued much the same way as the first half did with SAFC controlling the play, in fact other than the goal by Salloi, the Rangers did not get another shot on goal all game. Kempin and the Rangers defense though continued to hold strong and was able to preserve the point for the Rangers. Swope Park is now off until the 23rd when they make their first trip to Oklahoma City to take on Jimmy Nielsen and the OKC Energy.

Rangers Win Opener

The Swope Park Rangers got their first season off to a good start at Children's Mercy Park tonight, defeating the Portland Timbers 2 2-1 thanks to goals by Kevin Oliveira and Daniel Salloi.

The Rangers controlled the game for long periods of time against a Timbers side that didn't travel their full allotment of players for the game. In just the fourth minute Dane Kelly almost put the Rangers on top when he got onto the end of a long ball played over the top, Kelly got around his defender and fired a shot on goal that was tipped just around the post by Wade Hamilton to keep the game scoreless. The Rangers continued to press the game though causing all sorts of issues for the Portland defense. All three of SPR's front three had decent looks at goal but Kris Tyrpak, Jimmy Medranda, and Kelly again were all denied in the first half.

It didn't take long into the second half for the Rangers to break through. Kelly was once again played in on goal, but this time he was brought down in the box by a tackle leading to a penalty kick for the Rangers. Nineteen year old Kevin Oliveira stepped up and calmly put the ball into the side netting to score the first goal for the Rangers in their history. The lead was almost immediately lost as the Timbers pushed the other way and won a free kick off to the side about 35 yards from goal. The ensuing free kick into the box was headed on goal where Jon Kempin made the initial save but the ball went under him and was rolling towards goal when he reached an arm back and swatted the ball away from the goal line. The ensuing cross was again knocked away by Kempin and the Rangers escaped with their lead intact. The two sides were fairly even for much of the second half, although the Rangers looked to be the more dangerous of the two. Finally in second half stoppage time the Rangers were able to find the insurance goal on a quick counter. A through ball found substitute Mark Anthony Gonzalez toeing the offside line, Gonzalez proceeded into the attacking third and played a ball across the middle for Daniel Salloi who raced in and one timed a shot into the roof of the net to double the Rangers lead to 2-0. The insurance goal was needed as the Timbers themselves scored a goal in stoppage time as Nick Besler turned in a cross from Neco Brett late in stoppage time to cut the lead to a single goal. The Rangers held out in the end though and walked away with all three points from their first game.

Sporting Loan Three to Swope Park

The Swope Park Rangers kick off their inaugural season tomorrow night at Children's Mercy Park against the Portland Timbers 2. Ahead of their first game, the parent club, Sporting KC has sent three players from the first team on loan to the Rangers ahead of the game, Jon Kempin, Jimmy Medranda, and Daniel Salloi. All three were expected to spend time with the Rangers this season ahead of their first team and all should get plenty of playing experience with the USL side.

Kempin spent all of the Rangers preseason training with them. After spending the first portion of Sporting KC preseason with the first team, Kempin moved to the Rangers for the second half of Sporting's preseason. Kempin is likely expected to the starter for the Rangers, getting him the experience that Sporting KC has been trying to get him for the last two years on loan, only to be stopped due to goalkeeping injuries, inconsistencies, and departures. Hopefully in 2016 Kempin can finally get the chance to be a full time starter. If he does struggle, or KC goes through more goalkeeping issues, the club has two other goalkeepers, veteran, Zac Lubin and academy player, Steven Tekesky.

Medranda was another player from Sporting KC that spent the second half of preseason in Arizona training with the Rangers instead of Sporting KC. Medranda started all of the Rangers games in the Desert Diamond Cup. Since then though Medranda has been a fixture in the 18 man roster on each of Sporting's first three games. In fact he's been the first substitute off the bench for KC in their 1-0 win over Seattle and 2-1 win over Vancouver. He did not make the field in KC's last game against Toronto though. With Benny Feilhaber returning to health it would seem Medranda's spot in the 18 would likely go to him instead allowing him to go to the Rangers where he'll get more consistent minutes.

The final player loaned, Salloi has been a fixture in the 18 for Kansas City over the first three games of the season, but has yet to make his debut for Sporting KC. With the acquisition of Diego Rubio on loan, Salloi's time in the 18 was likely limited to begin with so this loan isn't much of a surprise, even though Salloi didn't spend any time with the Rangers during preseason. The announcement about the moves doesn't indicate a length of time for any of the three, but if Rubio isn't ready to be in the 18 come next week against Real Salt Lake, Salloi could very easily be recalled and be in the 18 for Sporting KC on Saturday against RSL.

Sporting KC Season Preview - Forwards

Full disclosure, this was written earlier today before the Diego Rubio rumors, please keep that in mind.

To finish out the look at Sporting KC's roster we reach the front line. It's a very winger heavy front line with five of the seven being predominately wingers. The team still has the reported new #9 coming in "in the next few days" according to Peter Vermes, that should add some much needed depth to KC's center forward position. Should make it less likely that Kansas City would be forced to play with a false 9 again this season as they did a couple times last season with Jacob Peterson and Graham Zusi.

Brad Davis - MLS' active leader in assists and second in terms of appearances in MLS play. He's currently 11 appearances behind the active leader, Kyle Beckermann, who is the league's all-time leader in appearances. 10 appearances and he can pass second place, Steve Ralston. He's only 14 behind Landon Donovan for first all time in assists, although that may be a stretch to hit this season. Still KC's pick up of probably one of the more disliked opponents since the rebranding was an interesting pick up. But you can't deny that Davis still have the ability to play at this level last season. He has hit double digits in assists six of the last seven seasons and has scored at least four goals a season in that same span. He's not going to be a like for like replacement of Krisztian Nemeth on that left wing, but he'll certainly fill the gap in a different way.

Dom Dwyer - Most people have said that Dwyer had a "down year" in 2015, and considering his 2014 when he set a club record for goals scored, that's hard to argue, since he only scored 12 goals in league play in 2015. To be fair to Dwyer there though he also had more support in 2015 and didn't "need" to score 20+ goals for KC last year. With help from the likes of Nemeth and Benny Feilhaber both hitting double digits in goals KC got a more balanced attack that made them a better team in 2015. This year though, depending on the new forward brought in, more of the weight is going to fall on Dwyer's shoulders without Nemeth. Davis, Justin Mapp, and Graham Zusi are not going to be double digit goal scorers, and expecting Feilhaber to completely repeat his 2015 performance may be asking too much. With more true "wingers" on the wings though Dwyer should get better service in 2016 which he should be able to get on the end of.

Connor Hallisey - Probably the big winner of preseason this year for Sporting KC, Hallisey scored a couple goals, had a couple assists, and in the games I saw looked much more ready to contribute in 2016. Last year at times Hallisey looked frustrating with his pace and with taking players on. In preseason games this year I thought he looked much better, he'd beat players on the dribble, he was able to get to the end line and send in crosses, he just looked overall more dangerous in those minimal minutes than he did in his time last year. He's gone from a player I thought would spend the entire season with the Swope Park Rangers to one that I think could be a decent contributor to Sporting this year as a spark off the bench.

Justin Mapp - The first free agent signing in MLS history, Mapp missed most of preseason with a turf toe injury. Mapp like Davis will both spend time on the left wing this season. Mapp provides a bit more of the dynamic dribbling that Nemeth brought, but nowhere near the same level. Mapp though is a deceptive player that will provide some creativity in terms of the dribble. He's not a flashy signing, but if he can stay healthy he'll be a solid contributor for KC this year.

Jacob Peterson - If there was a prototypical type of Peter Vermes player, it would probably be pretty close to Jacob Peterson. Peterson isn't a flashy player, he'll play basically anywhere on the field he's asked, for KC he's basically played everywhere but in goal. He has a strong work rate that has seen him continue to get time on the field. The down side is that his hustle, work rate, and willingness only go so far, he's frustrating to many fans with his play and that leads to lots of frustration with Vermes for continuing to give him time. With more depth on the team this year, if they can stay healthy, Peterson should see a decrease in the number of minutes that he's on the field for Sporting.

Daniel Salloi - KC's "work around and within the system" signing, the 19 year old Hungarian homegrown player is KC's only other "true" forward on the roster along with Dwyer. Salloi last year scored seven goals and added four assists across 16 games in all competitions for Ujpest FC in Hungary. Salloi may be a prime candidate to make some back and forth movement between Sporting KC and the Rangers depending on the needs of Sporting at the time.

Graham Zusi - Zusi is coming off the worst year of his career since becoming a starter in 2011 he scored just two goals and added just five assists in league play. Questions of his healthy since the end of the 2014 World Cup have dogged him the entire time. He apparently spent a good portion of the offseason not even putting on soccer cleats. Vermes has talked highly of him being ready to return to form from before the 2014 World Cup and re-establish himself in the lineup. Zusi may be the big recipient of the addition of Davis and Mapp as he has a history of scoring goals by making those back post runs for crosses. With better crosses on the wing opposite him he may be able score a few more of those in 2016.

The big question for the forward line will be the goals, Dwyer will get his fair share of them, but where's the secondary scoring going to come from? None of the other forwards on the roster are big goal scorers, or at least not yet. If there's one need that really still needs to be addressed by Vermes and company, it's the goal scoring. Hopefully whoever the young forward is that Kansas City is close to signing is able to help pick up some of the slack. Compared to last year though I am much more comfortable with the ability of a substitution off the bench to make a difference offensively should KC need it, I feel like KC could at the very least have a spark.

Sporting and Rangers End Preseason in Tucson Unbeaten

Sporting Kansas City and the Swope Park Rangers closed out their runs at the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson tonight. Both teams finished the run undefeated as the Rangers topped FC Tucson 1-0 while Sporting drew 2-2 with the Houston Dynamo.

The Rangers kicked off 30 minutes ahead of Sporting and controlled the game against the PDL side creating a number of chances. The opener for the Rangers came in the 32nd minute when former Sporting KC academy player Nansel Selbol won a ball off a Tucson defender near midfield. Selbol raced into the box holding off his defender before chipping a ball across the box for Dane Kelley who let the ball bounce before volleying the ball into the net to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. The Comets continued to pressure, not just in the first, but in the second as well with Tomas Granitto and Tommy Meyer both having good chances but neither able to put it in the net as the Rangers finished the Diamond Cup with a 2-0-2 record.

Sporting KC passed on playing in the Desert Diamond Cup final, passing on playing a second game against the New England Revolution, instead choosing to play the Houston Dynamo who KC had not yet played in preseason. The Dynamo had the better of the chances in the early going and center back Nuno Andre Coelho had to save a ball on the line after a header from Will Bruin. Shortly after Coelho was on the offensive end giving KC the lead in the 16th minute. Off a Connor Hallisey corner, Coelho made a near post run and flicked Hallisey's corner into the net to put KC on top 1-0. The Dynamo continued to control the game though after the goal and found a deserved equalizer when Jalil Anibaba crossed the ball for Giles Barnes to head past Tim Melia on an effort that he would say he should have done better with. The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1.

Kansas City came out better in the second half and was able to push forward more and create more opportunities in the second half. KC had a great opportunity to retake the lead in the 55th when Houston was called for a back pass when a cross was knocked back to Houston goalkeeper Calle Brown, who picked the ball up. On the restart the Dynamo lined up eight players on the goal line and instead of doing a touch and shoot like most teams do in that situation, Dom Dwyer fired the ball to the back post where Daniel Salloi just had to touch the ball home to give Sporting a 2-1 lead. The Dynamo picked up the pressure again and pushed Sporting looking for another equalizer. With all the pressure they found another one after some good interplay Erick Torres got in behind KC's defense and beat Melia to tie the game at 2-2. KC had to be strong defensively over the final 13 minutes to end the preseason unbeaten. Melia was called upon to make some big saves and KC finished the Desert Diamond Cup 1-0-3.

Both Sporting and the Rangers will return home to Kansas City with Sporting getting ready for their season opener against Seattle while the Rangers will continue preseason with a pair of games against local colleges set up over the next couple weeks.

Replacing Nemeth

It's been about a week since Krisztian Nemeth departed Kansas City for the Qatari league, and most of the venom that was being spewed at either Nemeth or the team seems to have died down just a little bit at this point. With the gut reactions out of the way I felt it was time to take a look at what Sporting KC is going to do at this point now that the club's second leading scorer last season has left.

The first part of the replacement is who is going to take his starting spot on KC's left wing. The favorite for that position, at least to start the season will likely be the newly acquired Brad Davis. While Davis played centrally a lot for the Houston Dynamo last season he is still able to play out wide and would be able to provide crosses to not only Dom Dwyer but to Graham Zusi to knock home at the far post similar to goals he's scored in the past. With Davis being 34 years old though he's unlikely going to be expected to start every game for Kansas City, especially with the way that Kansas City plays. That's where the addition of Justin Mapp comes in. Mapp and Davis will likely split duties for the most part out on the left wing for Kansas City throughout the season. Mapp will be able to spell Davis and KC won't see much of any drop off in talent, especially in April and May when the games come very fast for Sporting KC ahead of the summer break.

The next part of replacing him to look at is the goals that he scored. Nemeth scored 10 league goals and 16 in all competitions for KC last season, second on the team behind Dom Dwyer's 12 and 17 respectively. Those are some numbers that will be hard to hit for just one player on the team not named Dom Dwyer or Benny Feilhaber (with help from the penalty spot), so don't expect all those goals to be filled by just one player, expect the scoring slack to be picked up by committee among not just his on field replacements in Davis and Mapp, but also from a healthy Zusi. Davis has scored four goals in each of the last three seasons after a career high of eight in 2012. Mapp hasn't scored a goal in either of the last two seasons (2015 he only played five times due to injury) but over the course of his career has averaged a goal every 925 minutes. If you go off the mindset that he's going to be getting a number of games this season in relief of Davis, expecting at least two goals out of Mapp isn't wholly unexpected. Then you get to Zusi who scored just two goals last year for Kansas City, a career low since becoming a regular starter in 2011. He'd been averaging about five goals a season since 2011 up to last season, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that he could return to that level of form, especially with the likes of Davis and Mapp playing balls across the box that Zusi could get on the end of at the back post. So combined the three of them could make up for the loss of Nemeth in terms of goals. In terms of assists I don't think I even need to make a point on that when you consider that Davis and Mapp have a combined 187 assists in MLS play, they'll be able to replace Nemeth's assists without a problem.

To look at it from another angle, KC scored 48 goals in league play last season, the same number that the club scored in 2014 without Nemeth. In fact, in the five seasons since the club rebranded they've averaged 47 goals a season; four of those seasons have been without Nemeth. The counter to that is that KC scored 64 goals across all competitions last season, the second most in club history, only behind the 1996 season when the club scored 71 goals across all competitions.

While KC is able to replace those areas above with some work with the players currently on the roster there are some areas that KC will struggle with the loss of Nemeth. One area is his ability to take players on one-v-one and beat defenders on the dribble. The closest that KC has to that now is Mapp, who can replace it to an extent and has always shown flashes of being able to beat players not like Nemeth did against Portland, but can be players on the dribble. The problem is that while Mapp can do those things the problem for him has always been his ability to do it consistently. Early in the 2015 season Mapp showed that off in Montreal's run to the CONCACAF Champions League final. Many will argue that while Mapp does that, he also will disappear from games quite often, but that is something that Nemeth had issues with as well, especially on the wing for Kansas City. So while Mapp may not be able to score a goal like Nemeth did against Portland, or do it as consistently as Nemeth did, but Mapp does give KC a threat in one-v-one situations.

The one area that this may hurt KC is the most is probably in a position that Nemeth didn't even play much last year, center forward. While Dwyer started 28 games last season, when he didn't start it wasn't Nemeth that played the center forward position for the most part in his absence, it was the likes of Zusi and Jacob Peterson that played that spot. But if Dwyer had gone down for an extended period of time for some reason, you would have to think that Nemeth would have slid centrally to be the center forward on a more regular basis. With him now gone KC is extremely thin at the center forward position. The club has Peterson, who is a prototypical Peter Vermes player with his style of play and his work ethic on the field. But with only one goal last season (coming when he was a center forward) he's not going to strike an imposing presence as a center forward for Kansas City. After him you have the likes of Zusi, playing a false nine or Daniel Salloi, who while he has scored in the top division in Hungary is still just 19 years old. KC's striker depth is probably the largest worry in terms of Nemeth leaving the club.

So overall, while the loss of Nemeth is certainly a big loss for Kansas City the loss is something that KC should be able to survive. In the end I should have put "replacing" in quotes though, because Kansas City really isn't going to be straight replacing him, at least not immediately. The team will need to make adjustments to the playing style that they had at the end of the season to adjust to not having Nemeth on the wing.

Sporting Sign Salloi to Homegrown Contract

Sporting KC continued to add pieces to their team this offseason as today the club announced that they'd signed their fourth homegrown player in club history. The club announced that they'd signed Daniel Salloi to a homegrown player contract. The Hungarian moved to the United States in August of 2014 as an AFS exchange student. He spent the 2014-2015 season with the Sporting KC academy before moving back to Hungary where he signed an amateur contract with Ujpest FC in the Hungarian top flight. During his run with Ujpest, Salloi scored seven goals and added four assists in 16 games across all competitions.

Right away he would appear to become forward depth behind the team's starter, Dom Dwyer and countryman, Krisztian Nemeth, but at 19 he could also see time with the Swope Park Rangers this season as well. For those that thought that KC was going to take a forward in the Superdraft tomorrow this would certainly appear to change that likelihood now that KC takes a forward tomorrow.

This signing as a whole is very interesting to me, not only because I'm excited about the prospect of Salloi, as he appears to have the tools to become a good player for KC, but because of how KC acquired him. Up until this signing only three teams had signed fewer homegrown players than the number that KC had signed, three. And very few teams in the league hadn't signed a homegrown player in the over two years since Kansas City signed Erik Palmer-Brown as their third homegrown player. The lack of signings and the rumors of Eric De Julio not being offered a homegrown player contract were beginning to get me to doubt KC's ability to use the system to bring in players. Not that I wanted KC to sign a player just to sign one, plenty of MLS teams seem to have done that over the years as plenty of homegrown players have made few to no appearances for the clubs that signed them.

The signing may cause some grumbling among other teams and fans regarding how KC was able to get Salloi on a homegrown contract considering he was playing in the Hungarian first division in the fall, but the key is the amateur contract Salloi was under at Ujpest. Basically it would be similar, but not exactly like current college players playing in the PDL during the summer. The difference being that Salloi was doing it at a higher level for the most part than what the PDL is. Another issue would be the fact that he's "homegrown" when he was only in KC for a short time. Overall Sporting may have well found a couple loopholes in the homegrown player rule that they were able to exploit to get themselves a very talented, young player who could be a big steal for KC.
