Collin Traded to New York - Former SKC Wizards Update

It'd been a rough second season in Orlando for former Kansas City defender, Aurelien Collin. The Frechman lost his starting job at Orlando and had made just two appearances for the club. This past week though Collin was traded to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for a conditional draft pick. The move is a good one for the Red Bulls who won't be fronting all of Collin's salary and will get a proven center back who can help them work through their current injury issues along the back line.

Elsewhere, the 2016-2017 CONCACAF Champions League is taken shape, and a former player could be making an appearance at Children's Mercy Park later this year. Daneil Cyrus and W Connection qualified for this year's tournament after taking second this past week at the CFU Club Championship for Caribbean teams to qualify. Also qualifying was Central FC also out of Trinidad and Don Bosco out of Haiti.

Here is the rest of this week's update.

Bunbury, Zusi, Cyrus, and Collin Player News

Some quick hits on new for some Sporting KC players.

Bunbury and US U23 Team Top FC Dallas

In the first of a few scrimmages in the current US Under 23 camp, the US team pulled out a 2-1 win over FC Dallas. Dallas grabbed the lead through Andrew Jacobsen off a corner. Shortly after the US equalized through Ike Opara off a Freddy Adu corner. The winner for the 23's came shortly after half time when Dallas' own Brek Shea scored to make it 2-1. Later on the US Kofi Sarkodie and Shea sent off for two yellow cards as the US ended with 9 men.

Teal Bunbury started for the US in the center striker position in the game. He subbed out at half time for Tony Taylor, but reappeared in the 67th, coming on for Adu. So Bunbury got a total of 68 minutes in the friendly with the US team.

Zusi Contract Extension Official

Robb Heineman let the cat out of the bag last week on this, but today it was made official by the team. Zusi has signed a new contract with the club. Per club and league rules, the specifics of the deal were not announced, but Heineman's tweet referenced a 4 year deal for the central midfielder.

Cyrus Waived

In a move that I think most people saw coming, Daneil Cyrus is no longer with Sporting KC. The Trinidad and Tobago international had not been in camp for Sporting KC at all this preseason. The reason given was for "personal reasons", but with Cyrus turning up in camp with the Trinidad U23 team, you knew that his time in KC was going to be ending soon. Even if Cyrus had been around, he'd have been competing with the newly signed Cyprian Hedrick and draft pick Stefan Antonijevic for time.

Cyrus appeared in two league games for Sporing KC last season. Coming on as a sub for Aurelien Collin against Toronto after Collin hurt his back. He then started the next game against New England, being removed for Teal Bunbury as Sporting was trailing. Shortly after that, Cyrus broke his foot in a reserve game and was done for the season.

KC's other no show in camp for personal reason, Birahim Diop, will likely also be on his way out of KC sooner than later one would assume.

Collin's Corner

Words do not do justice, just watch.

More Sporting International News

To go along with Teal Bunbury's call up to the US U23 team two more Sporting KC players have/had national team duties to attend to. Today, Honduras named their roster for their upcoming friendly against Ecuador. The game will take place on February 29th, the same date that the US national team is set to take on Italy in Italy. Espinoza is the lone MLS representative in the team. Missing out on the game is former Houston Dynamo forward, Carlo Costly. The man who was one time linked with a move to KC, and who scored the clinching goal against KC in the playoffs, will miss out on the game because he's not playing regularly, instead he was in Miami playing against retired "fat" players as Honduras coach termed it (not related to Espinoza at all, but found it hilarious that the coach said this).

In other news for internationals playing with Sporting KC, Daneil Cyrus is in camp with the Trinidad and Tobago U23 team as they too prepare for the Olympics. Today they played the Guyana national team. Cyrus started for the T&T U23 team as they took care of Guyana 3-1. The team is preparing for their qualifying group that will contain favorites Mexico out in LA. Cyrus, who is still on KC's roster, has not been a part of preseason, instead being granted leave for "personal reasons". With Cyprian Hedrick signing (per a Tweet from Dom Dwyer, since deleted) and Stefan Antonijevic still hanging around, you have to wonder about Cyrus' future with Kansas City after he appeared in 2 games last season playing just over 100 minutes before breaking a bone in his foot in a reserve game.

Cyrus Called into Trinidad Camp

Daneil Cyrus is not in camp with Sporting KC due to "personal reasons" and it doesn't look like he'll be joining the team soon. Word out of Trinidad (h/t The Daily Wiz) is that Cyrus will be joining the Trinidad and Tobago U-23 for a camp. The camp will be capped off by two friendlies again the full national team of Guyana. The teams will play on the 14th and the 16th, the first match being less than a week away. Since Cyrus has yet to be in camp, it would seem unlikely that the TnT international would return for a few days then leave for Trinidad, but stranger things have happened. Trinidad continues to prepare for their Olympic qualifying matches coming up.

Cyrus continues to be one of the three players to not report to camp yet for KC along with Birahim Diop and Pablo Punyed. While Cyrus only played just over 100 minutes, his loss could be a bit of a blow for KC. KC entered this season with Cyrus likely being one of the candidates to be the center back on the bench, but the 4th or 5th option overall behind Matt Besler, Aurelien Collin, Julio Cesar, and possibly Lawrence Olum. If Cyrus doesn't end up on the team this year it would put Olum firmly in that spot, although he'd likely face some challenge from rookies Cyprian Hedrick and Stefan Antonijevic.

Daneil Cyrus in Trinidad Training Squad for Olympic Qualifying

H/T to The Front Men

Trinidad and Tobago has named their training squad in preparations for the Olympic qualifying coming up in March. Sporting KC defender, Daneil Cyrus has been named to the TnT squad that is currently training in Port of Spain in Trinidad. The team is preparing to be in Group B of Olympic qualifying with Honduras, Panama, and Mexico in Los Angeles which begins on March 22nd. Should Trinidad finishing as one of the top two teams, they'll qualifying for the semifinals in Kansas City with a chance to qualify for the 2012 London games. Before going to LA though, Trinidad ends this camp with a friendly against the Finland national team.

Youngest and Oldest to Play for KC

Since the season ended (and actually probably before that) I'd been working on a project to find the youngest and oldest players to appear for Sporting KC throughout their history. I finished that project up earlier this past week. And to start off my updating of all the stats that I do, I figured I'd start with a new one. Here are not only the 10 youngest and oldest players to appear in a game, but the 10 youngest and oldest to start a game as well. I'm including their age in days and years, the date of the game and the opponent.

Ten youngest to appear in a league game for KC.
1. Nino da Silva - 18 years, 158 days - 8/31/1997 - DC United
2. Yura Movsisyan - 18 years, 311 days - 5/13/2006 - DC United
3. Soony Saad - 19 years, 0 days - 8/17/2011 - Portland
4. Jake Dancy - 19 years, 137 days - 8/24/1997 - San Jose
5. Jose Burciaga - 19 years, 184 days - 5/19/2001 - Chicago
6. Teal Bunbury - 20 years, 28 days - 3/27/2011 - DC United
7. Chance Myers - 20 years, 124 days - 4/9/2008 - New England
8. Francisco Gomez - 20 years, 132 days - 6/6/1999 - Los Angeles
9. Daneil Cyrus - 20 years, 220 days - 7/23/2011 - Toronto
10. Peter Byaruhunga - 20 years, 325 days - 7/8/2000 - New York

Soony Saad and Daneil Cyrus join the list in their first year with the team. The two knocked off Michael Harrington and Will John who had been on the list before this season. All but one of these appearances were made as a substitute as well, save Jose Burciaga's appearance, which was a start. Jon Kempin can still join this list, being 18 years old currently he still has plenty of time to join the list.

Ten youngest to appear in a competitive game for KC.
1. Nino da Silva - 18 years, 158 days - 8/31/1997 - DC United
2. Yura Movsisyan - 18 years, 311 days - 5/13/2006 - DC United
3. Soony Saad - 19 years, 0 days - 8/17/2011 - Portland
4. Jake Dancy - 19 years, 137 days - 8/24/1997 - San Jose
5. Jose Burciaga - 19 years, 184 days - 5/19/2001 - Chicago
6. Teal Bunbury - 20 years, 28 days - 3/27/2011 - DC United
7. Chance Myers - 20 years, 124 days - 4/9/2008 - New England
8. Francisco Gomez - 20 years, 132 days - 6/6/1999 - Los Angeles
9. Daneil Cyrus - 20 years, 220 days - 7/23/2011 - Toronto
10. Peter Byaruhunga - 20 years, 325 days - 7/8/2000 - New York

You'll notice that this list is the same as above. Kevin Ellis did just miss out on joining this list as his appearance against the Chicago Fire PDL in the Open Cup this year was when he 20 years 363 days old. Once again, Kempin is the only player currently on the roster that can join this list.

Ten youngest players to START a league match.
1. Yura Movsisyan - 18 years, 357 days - 6/28/2006 - DC United
2. Jose Burciaga - 19 years, 184 days - 5/19/2001 - Chicago
3. Nino da Silva - 20 years, 11 days - 6/6/1999 - Los Angeles
4. Jake Dancy - 20 years, 52 days - 5/31/1998 - Colorado
5. Teal Bunbury - 20 years, 85 days - 5/23/2010 - Columbus
6. Chance Myers - 20 years, 127 days - 4/12/2008 - Houston
7. Daneil Cyrus - 20 years ,227 days - 7/30/2011 - New England
8. Francisco Gomez - 20 years, 228 days - 9/10/1999 - Colorado
9. Nick Garcia - 20 years, 351 days - 3/25/2000 - Chicago
10. Peter Byaruhanga - 20 years, 364 days - 8/16/2000 - San Jose

Basically it's 9 of the 10 players from above with the order mixed up a little bit. Nick Garcia replaces Saad on the list, as he's yet to start a game for KC. Still with Saad still being 19, he still has a good season and a half to still potentially join this list, knocking Byaruhanga off, as does Kempin. Cyrus knocked off Harrington again off the list.

Ten youngest players to START a competitive game for KC.
1. Yura Movsisyan - 18 years, 357 days - 6/28/2006 - DC United
2. Jose Burciaga - 19 years, 184 days - 5/19/2001 - Chicago
3. Nino da Silva - 20 years, 11 days - 6/6/1999 - Los Angeles
4. Teal Bunbury - 20 years, 45 days - 4/13/2010 - Colorado
5. Jake Dancy - 20 years, 52 days - 5/31/1998 - Colorado

Only one change for the competitive appearance list, Teal Bunbury and Jake Dancy switch places due to Bunbury's start in a US Open Cup qualifier against Colorado. All the rest of the games are league matches.

Ten oldest players to appear in a league game for KC.
1. Preki - 42 years, 113 days - 10/15/2005 - Dallas
2. Mo Johnston - 38 years, 121 days - 8/12/2001 - Colorado
3. Peter Vermes - 35 years, 303 days - 9/20/2002 - Colorado
4. Tony Meola - 35 years, 179 days - 8/18/2004 - Columbus
5. Richard Gough - 35 years, 174 days - 9/26/1997 - Colorado
6. Kevin Hartman - 35 years, 152 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
7. Claudio Lopez - 35 years, 99 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
8. Bo Oshoniyi - 34 years, 345 days - 10/14/2006 - New York
9. Kerry Zavagnin - 34 years, 115 days - 10/25/2008 - New England
10. Jimmy Nielsen - 34 years, 77 days - 10/22/2011 - DC United

Looking at this list, you have Preki all by himself, then you have a 4 year drop, then Mo Johnston, then another 3 year drop before getting to Peter Vermes. With Nielsen still having 2 years, plus an option year now on his contract, Nielsen will continue to move up this list after joining this season. Earlier this season Nielsen replaced Paul Rideout on this list.

Ten oldest players in all competitions for KC.
1. Preki - 42 years, 113 days - 10/15/2005 - Dallas
2. Mo Johnston - 38 years, 222 days - 11/21/2001 - Santos Laguna
3. Peter Vermes - 35 years, 315 days - 10/2/2002 - Los Angeles
4. Tony Meola - 35 years, 214 days - 9/22/2004 - Chicago
5. Richard Gough - 35 years, 186 days - 10/8/1997 - Colorado
10. Jimmy Nielsen - 34 years, 92 days - 11/6/2011 - Houston

No changes to the order on this list when you factor in things like playoffs, Open Cup, and Copa Mercanorte matches, but some changes in the ages. One appearance by Nielsen next season will see him jump Zavagnin on both lists.

Ten oldest players to START a league game.
1. Preki - 42 years, 99 days - 10/1/2005 - Chicago
2. Mo Johnston - 38 years, 113 days - 8/4/2001 - Columbus
3. Peter Vermes - 35 years, 303 days - 9/20/2002 - Colorado
4. Tony Meola - 35 years, 179 days - 8/18/2004 - Columbus
5. Richard Gough - 35 years, 174 days - 9/26/1997 - Colorado
6. Kevin Hartman - 35 years, 152 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
7. Claudio Lopez - 35 years, 99 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
8. Bo Oshoniyi - 34 years, 345 days - 10/14/2006 - New York
9. Jimmy Nielsen - 34 years, 77 days - 10/22/2011 - DC United
10. Kerry Zavagnin - 34 years, 67 days - 9/7/2008 - Houston

One order change and two game changes from the list above as Preki, Johnston, and Zavagnin didn't start their last game for the club in league play. That pushes Nielsen ahead of Zavagnin on this list.

Ten oldest players to START a competitive game for KC.
1. Preki - 42 years, 99 days - 10/1/2005 - Chicago
2. Mo Johnston - 38 years, 222 days - 11/21/2001 - Santos Laguna
3. Peter Vermes - 35 years, 315 days - 10/2/2002 - Los Angeles
4. Tony Meola - 35 years, 214 days - 9/22/2004 - Chicago
5. Richard Gough - 35 years, 186 days - 10/8/1997 - Colorado
6. Kevin Hartman - 35 years, 152 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
7. Claudio Lopez - 35 years, 99 days - 10/24/2009 - DC United
8. Bo Oshoniyi - 34 years, 345 days - 10/14/2006 - New York
9. Jimmy Nielsen - 34 years, 92 days - 11/6/2011 - Houston
10. Kerry Zavagnin - 34 years, 67 days - 9/7/2008 - Houston

Once again not much change, Nielsen again jumped ahead of Zavagnin on this list.

Injury Crisis?

The injuries for Sporting Kansas City seem to continue to mount up, with news on two more players coming out today. First for some good news, the team posted on Twitter today that captain, Davy Arnaud had returned to training. Combine that with the return of Craig Rocastle to game play yesterday in the reserve game. The two of them will help boost the midfield that has suffered some injuries and suspensions lately.

Still, though there are plenty of injury issues going around. Aurelien Collin is still out with his back injury. Best case scenario could see him back probably in early to mid-September. But if recovery goes slowly, Collin could miss longer. Back injuries are something that can take a long time to heal depending on the person. Hopefully he's on the short side. Especially since today word came out that KC is down another central defender. Newly signed, Daneil Cyrus has broken the 5th metatarsal in his left foot. The injury will require surgery and will see him miss the rest of the 2011 season. Combine those two and it's a blow to KC. Now KC only has 3 central defenders on it's roster, Matt Besler, Julio Cesar, and Shavar Thomas. Thomas had likely been on the trade block and transfer list up until the injury to Cyrus. Now KC can't afford to get rid of the Jamaican, as he's the only back up KC has if Besler or Cesar gets injured. I'd said that previously I wanted KC to get another center back. There's 6 days left in the MLS transfer window to go shopping outside the league, but the trade deadline is still about a month away so KC could get someone within the league. But everyone knows Cyrus is now up and the price for KC to get a defender just went up. The other possibility is that KC signs a free agent, for example, a guy like Nick Cardenas who the Wizards drafted in 2010 and played 90 minutes for KC in the reserve game yesterday. It'll be interesting to see if KC makes a move.

The other new injury is the rumor that Andrew Wiebe posted today about Luke Sassano. Sassano limped through the last 2 minutes plus stoppage time of the game on the weekend against the Sounders after a collision with Lamar Neagle. Wiebe has heard that Sassano has a sprained MCL and will miss the next 4-6 weeks recovering from the injury. The injury looked a lot worse watching it on replay after the game. With Arnaud and Rocastle on their way back, this injury may not hurt as much, but until they're able to go KC is going to have some depth issues at midfield. Especially when you factor in that we haven't heard anything with regards to the status to Jeferson, who limped off to be replaced by Sassano against the Sounders. Hopefully with the extra time off, Jeferson will be ready to go in about a week against Portland. But if he can't the injury crisis could continue.

KC Confirm Cyrus Loan (Another Announcement Tomorrow)

Earlier today, Sporting KC confirmed the signing of Trinidad and Tobago international Daneil Cyrus on loan from 1st Santa Rosa FC in Trindad. Cyrus had trialed with the team all through pre-season after impressing at a combine down in the islands over the winter. The teams though had not been able to reach a deal for the player and Sporting had moved in another direction. Now Cyrus comes into a team that needs depth at center back. With Julio Cesar playing more d-mid KC only had 3 central defenders. Cyrus will fight for time with Jamaican international, Shavar Thomas.

The announcement of Cyrus means that he is not the player announcement being referred to by Robb Heineman. The speculation now switches to Jeferson, and tomorrow's "major player announcement" the team is going to be doing tomorrow. Jeferson, the Vasco da Gama attacking midfielder is the lead candidate for being that "major player" referenced in today's announcement. I'm still not sure about this potential signing as Jeferson seems to have had some thigh injury issues that have plagued him, but hopefully he has overcome them.

Daneil Cyrus to KC?

Word out of Trinidad today is that Sporting KC has a new central defender. Long time target Daneil Cyrus is on his way to KC on a loan deal from his Trinidad club, Santa Rosa FC apparently. Cyrus had impressed during the preseason and the team had tried to work out a deal, but back in March word from Cyrus' club was that the offer was too low. Cyrus will be a boost to KC's back line which is thin at this point. With Julio Cesar moving to more of a d-mid position, KC only had 3 center backs on their roster, starters Aurelien Collin and Matt Besler, and Jamaican captain Shavar Thomas. Adding another CB had to be a priority this transfer window for this team. You do have to wonder if this is the announcement that Robb Heineman mentioned today on Twitter for tomorrow.

Cyrus Gone From Camp, Not Being Signed

Trinidad and Tobago youth international, Daneil Cyrus is now gone from camp with Kansas City. Cyrus did not play in the team's double header against Portland and Montreal last weekend and was again not in the lineup last night when KC took on the Arizona Sahuaros. There'd been no word on what had happened to him but some were speculating that he was gone. Now we have confirmation of that as he's now back in his home country playing in the local league.

According to the article it looks like the move fell through when it came to discuss salary according to 1st Santa Rosa's coach, Keith Look Loy; "...the offer from the club was not accepted. They liked the player very much and agreed that he could be a big asset to them this season, but the numbers (were not) adding up."

With Cyrus gone from camp, that leaves Matt Besler, Mike Jones, Shavar Thomas and trialists Omar Colley and Julio Cesar Santos Correa. Santos Correa though did not play last weekend either and is apparently back in Spain at this time, but is still being looked at for a roster spot. Should KC lose out on Santos Correa as well, it's another blow for KC. Already fans are questioning the additions on defense as not being enough to upgrade from the problems that plagued the central of defense last year, and if Santos Correa isn't signed I don't think many fans are going to feel comfortable with Besler-Thomas partnership. Even if Santos Correa is signed there are still going to be a lot of questions asked of the upgrades the team has done.
