Controversy for Kamara and Sierra Leone - Former SKC Wizards Update

With the international break going on this past week, many former players weren't in action. Many of those that were, were with their national team playing with their country. One of those players Kei Kamara was the center of some late controversy in Sierra Leone's 1-1 draw with the Ivory Coast. Heading into their final group game of African Cup of Nations qualifying, Sierra Leone needed a win over the defending ACN champions to advance to the tournament for just the third time. Down a goal with 20 minutes left, Kamara equalized for Sierra Leone with a diving header. Then in stoppage time, Sierra Leone won a corner, off of which Kamara headed a ball towards goal that was cleared off the line, but were followed by strong protests by Sierra Leone players that it had crossed the line. Unfortunately their protests went unheard and the 1-1 draw was enough to see Ivory Coast through to the 2017 tournament in Gabon.

Preki Off to the EPL? - Former SKC Wizards Update

It was a really weird day in news for former KC players. The news centers around the club's all time leading scorer, and probably the greatest player to play for the club, Preki. First early in the day, bookies in England made Preki the favorite to replace Nigel Pearson as manager at Premier League side, Leicester City at 3/1 odds. Then Preki resigned from his position as coach of USL side, the Sacramento Republic after this weekend's game, where he'd gotten back into coaching after a three year hiatus. It's certainly not official yet, but the news all right back to back would certainly point to it. It's crazy to think that after coaching both Chivas USA and Toronto FC that Preki will now be off to the Premier League.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Mexican Interest in Gil - Former SKC Wizards Update

Luis Gil was only a KC player for a day or so before being traded to Real Salt Lake in exchange for an international roster spot, a 2011 second round draft pick (used on JT Murray) and 25% of any future sell on by the club. Since then, Gil has gotten plenty of time with Salt Lake over the years and before a leader on the US youth teams that he's represented. Now he's getting interest from teams abroad. Reports today that Mexican clubs are interested in Gil. whose contract apparently expires after this season. Should Gil leave for nothing, KC's part of the Gil trade becomes more lopsided against KC (although they really had little choice).

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Youngest/Oldest Goal Scorers for Sporting KC

More statistics, this time I'm updating my list of the youngest and oldest goal scorers for Kansas City in league play and in all competitions.

In league play, no new players joined the list in 2014. A number of Kansas City's draft picks could join this list should they score in the 2015 season though, so there could be some shake up here.

1. Soony Saad - 19 years, 0 days - 8/17/2011 vs Portland
2. Yura Movsisyan - 19 years, 293 days - 4/25/2007 vs Toronto

4. Teal Bunbury - 20 years, 137 days - 7/14/2010 vs Columbus

Martinez Moves to Carolina - Former SKC Wizards Update

I missed this a few weeks ago,but Alex Martinez has moved to join his brother, Enzo in the NASL. Martinez signed on with the Carolina Railhawks ahead of the NASL roster freeze. Martinez played his college ball in North Carolina and now will get to play with his brother, who had been drafted by Real Salt Lake, but never made an appearance for the club.

Martinez Sent Off in Crazy Finish - Former SKC Wizards Update

Former Sporting KC midfielder, Alex Martinez was sent off this past week for Orange County in a crazy finish in their 2-1 loss to Wilmington. The craziness started in second half stoppage time with the game tied 1-1. Orange County won a corner kick. Martinez went over to take the kick, but before he could, some pushing in the box, just in front of the goalkeeper, led to a pair of red cards, one to a player on each team. Wilmington's Andrae Campbell had to be restrained by his teammates. As he left the field, a Wilmington coach followed him to escort him to the locker room. As he passed the corner flag where the ball was still set up for the corner, with the referee's back turned, the Wilmington coach kicked the ball away from the spot. Martinez took exception to this and after a quick appeal to the referee, followed after the coach and gave him a push. Th referee came over and spoke with Martinez and eventually gave him a red card. After Martinez appealed for a minute he turned and ran after the Wilmington coach who had kicked the ball away. The field cleared as the rest of the teams followed Martinez. After everything was cleared up, Wilmington scored a late winner.  Check out the game here, the fun begins around the 2 hour 25 minute mark.

Martinez Signs with Orange County - Former SKC Wizards Update

Alex Martinez has found a new club. After trialing with the Columbus Crew and San Antonio Scorpions, Martinez has signed with the Orange County Blues of the USL-Pro division. He jumped right into things too, as the Blues have had three games this week. Martinez started all three of those games, scoring in their game tonight, a 3-2 loss to Charleston.

Another player to keep an eye on is new former SKC Wizard, Peterson Joseph. Joseph is currently in Tanzania training with Azam FC.

Sporting Release Martinez

In a move that's proven surprising to Sporting KC fans, and many MLS fans around the league, Sporting KC today announced that they had released midfielder Alex Martinez. The Uruguayan midfielder had appeared in 10 MLS games for KC this year and both of the team's US Open Cup games, scoring a goal in KC's 2-0 win over Minnesota United. He'd started three games for KC this season and had played over 400 minutes for the club.

The timing of move on one hand seems odd with KC struggling to find healthy bodies, the club only dressed 16 players this past Friday in Portland. They also have another game this Sunday before the summer transfer window opens on July 8th.

On the other hand MLS waiver rules state that if a player on a semi-guaranteed contract is waived prior to July 1st, that player's salary does not count against the team's salary budget. And while Martinez was one of KC's "off budget" players and didn't count against the cap, the date of the release can't be ignored.

While Martinez's stats don't show too well for him, he continued to get minutes on the field ahead of some of KC's other midfielders, specifically Jimmy Medranda and Victor Munoz.

People have asked whether Martinez took up an international roster spot or not for Sporting. The releases regarding both Martinez's signing and his release make no mention of an international roster spot. And in the past when a player signed, or released has taken an international spot, the releases have said as much.

One has to think that he'll get another opportunity in the league. With another two expansion teams coming next year Martinez has the ability to contribute for someone at this level. But even after looking over possibilities this move still confuses me.

S.A.S. Thursday After Stats

Alex Martinez scored his first professional goal.

At 22 years, 297 days, he's the 19th youngest player to score for Sporting KC. He knocked Davy Arnaud (22 years, 350 days) out of the top 20.

The goal by Soony Saad was his 5th game winner in all competitions for KC, tying him for 19th place on that list with Jack Jewsbury, Jimmy Conrad, and Dom Dwyer.

CJ Sapong made his 11th appearance in all parts of the Open Cup, tying him with Preki and Chance Myers for 5th on that list.

Sapong made his 9th appearance in the Open Cup proper, tying him with Davy Arnaud for 5th place on that list.

Seth Sinovic made his 8th appearance in all parts of the Open Cup, tying him with Matt McKeon, Kei Kamara, and Aurelien Collin for 16th on that list.

Sinovic made his 8th start in all parts of the Open Cup, tying him with 6 other players for 7th on that list.

Sinovic made his 7th start in the Open Cup proper, tying him with Davy Arnaud, Preki, and Aurelien Collin for 6th on that list.

It was Sinovic's 7th appearance in the US Open Cup proper, tying him with 9 other players for 12th on that list.

Included in those 9 other players, Jacob Peterson and Lawrence Olum, who also made their 7th US Open Cup proper appearance for KC.

Peterson and Olum also tied Diego Gutierrez for 20th with their 7th appearance in all versions of the Open Cup.

Peterson made his 6th start in all parts of the Open Cup, tying him with 5 players for 18th on that list.

Peterson made his 6th start in the Open Cup proper, moving him into a tie with 6 other players for 10th on that list.

Olum made his 5th start in the Open Cup proper, tying him with 11 other players for 17th on that list.

Sporting Advance Past Minnesota in US Open Cup Play

It wasn't the best performance for Sporting KC, but KC got the job done in the end against the NASL Minnesota United and advanced to the 5th round of the US Open Cup.

The first half was not one that most Sporting fans, or fans of soccer in general will want to watch again any time soon. It did have one bright moment early on in the game, when in the seventh minute, Soony Saad was able to get space near the corner of the box and lifted a shot towards the back post that beat Minnesota goalkeeper, Mitchell Hildebrandt, but didn't beat the cross bar as it bounced back into play and was cleared away. The rest of the half was controlled by United who kept KC from really getting much going offensively. They only tested Andy Gruenebaum a couple times, but also looked quite dangerous with other chances, including a drive by Daniel Mendes that went wide of the post and was just out of the reach for Christian Ramirez to turn in. Much of KC's issues were in the midfield, where there was too much space between Lawrence Olum and KC's other two midfielders, Claudio Bieler and Victor Munoz. Munoz especially had an extremely poor debut for Sporting making some poor passes and losing possession on a number of occasions. His night ended early when he picked up a hamstring injury after losing the ball near midfield in the 35th minute. Alex Martinez was inserted for the Spaniard and really helped to fill the gap in midfield for KC as they were able to gain more of the possession over the final 10 minutes of the half. The problem was that possession started to become what seems to have become traditional KC possession in the Open Cup against lower division sides. Keeping possession in a semi-circle around the opponents box and in their end of the field with little in the way of ideas to break it down.

The possession for KC continued early in the second half as well. But things changed in the 50th minute, when former Missouri Comet, Cristiano Dias was given a straight red card for a challenge on Dom Dwyer. Dias came in hard for an aerial challenge with the Englishman but did so recklessly in the eyes of the referee. Watching the replays you could also say that he led with his forearms into the challenge. The red card was a blow for United as they had up to that point looked the better of the two teams and the one more likely to find the net. From that point KC was the one that really pressured the game, with Dwyer forcing a good save out of Hildebrandt on a quick turning shot. Minutes later he did well again coming off his line to make a block on a shot by Seth Sinovic who'd gotten in behind Minnesota's defense. Even a man down, United still looked dangerous, with Ramirez going just wide of Gruenebaum's post after he turned Erik Palmer-Brown the wrong way with some good skill. KC finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute. After a cross into the box was cut out, the ball fell to Olum who slid the ball across to Saad who fired a shot from outside the box. With all the bodies in front of him it seems Hildebrandt may have been shielded from seeing the ball as the shot skipped and went inside his near post giving KC the 1-0 lead. Minnesota pushed the game trying to find an equalizer, forcing some rough defending from KC, and some luck. A header off a United corner went just over the bar. KC continued to push themselves as well, looking to add to the lead. In the 87th minute they were able to do that. Sal Zizzo got played into the box for Toni Dovale. Zizzo's initial pass to the back post for Dwyer was deflected by a United defender. Zizzo though recollected the loose ball and laid it back to Martinez who was trailing the play. Martinez slotted the ball into the corner, doubling KC's lead. While Minnesota pressured late in the game they weren't able to find a goal as KC advanced to play the Portland Timbers next Tuesday.

Wizards Man of the Match - Alex Martinez - Settled KC's midfield immediately when he entered the game. Helped to close the gap between the defense and the attackers. Was extremely active in midfield and got the goal he's deserved for the last few games.

Player Ratings - Gruenebaum 6, Peterson 6, Palmer-Brown 6, Ellis 6, Sinovic 6, Olum 5, Munoz 3, Bieler 4, Dovale 6, Dwyer 5, Saad 7. Subs Martinez 7, Zizzo 6, Sapong NR.

Sunday After Stats

At 20 years and 37 days, Jimmy Medranda became the 5th youngest player to start a league game for KC. He knocked Justin Detter out of the top 20.

In all competitions he became the 6th youngest player to start a game for KC, knocking Matt McKeon off that list.

Seth Sinovic made his 100th league start of his MLS career.

Aurelien Collin scored his 15th goal in all competitions for KC, tying him with Jose Burciaga, Sasha Victorine, Claudio Lopez, and Jack Jewsbury for 20th on that list.

Alex Martinez made his Sporting KC debut.

Oriol Rosell made his 50th appearance in all competitions for KC.

Matt Besler made his 128th league appearance for KC, tying him with Jimmy Nielsen for 12th place all time on that list.

A Look at the Depth Chart - Midfield

Continuing to work forward through Kansas City's team, we move on to the midfield. KC saw no movement out from the midfield position, and only one addition, the signing of third round draft pick, Alex Martinez. As with the defense and the forwards, it's been all about the consistency for KC's midfield.

Attacking Midfielder
1. Benny Feilhaber
2. Graham Zusi
3. Claudio Bieler
4. Jimmy Medranda
5. Alex Martinez

Feilhaber gets the nod ahead of Zusi as the number one on this depth chart because in KC's "Best XI" Zusi's number 1 position is elsewhere on the field. Bieler played a few games in the attacking midfield spot during preseason and didn't look completely out of place. For me though Bieler being back in midfield puts a lot more pressure on the remaining two midfield spots in my opinion for it to be really succession for KC. Medranda looked really impressive during the preseason for KC and looks set to get quite a few minutes in the upcoming season with all the competitions. Martinez rounds out the attacking midfield position. The rookie has also been impressive this preseason, picking up three assists for KC.

Box to Box Midfielder
1. Paulo Nagamura
2. Benny Feilhaber
3. Oriol Rosell
4. Mikey Lopez
5. Christian Duke

Nagamura's return to the midfield helped to propel Kansas City to MLS Cup this past year. His play was key and keeps him at the top of the depth chart. Behind him is Feilhaber and Rosell, both of whom had time playing in the role while Nagamura was out. Feilhaber when Zusi dropped into the midfield and Rosell when Olum played. Behind those two comes last year's first round pick, Lopez. The Generation Adidas player only played one game for KC last year, in the US Open Cup. Without US youth team commitments, Lopez should spend more time with KC and get more game action. Duke spent most of last season on loan to Orlando City where he got plenty of game experience. All of which will come in handy with the number of games KC already has on the schedule and questions on how healthy Nagamura can stay.

Holding Midfielder
1. Oriol Rosell
2. Lawrence Olum
3. Paulo Nagamura

Rosell is the primary starter here, establishing himself in the role last year, taking over for Julio Cesar. When Rosell was rested, or as in MLS Cup injured, Olum filled in quite admirably. I had my doubts about him, especially after he'd been the team's third center back for the majority of the 2012 season. But he did quite well for himself. Behind those two the next in line is Nagamura dropping into the role while KC goes with a more attacking midfield.

While the midfield has been consistent, there are still some questions.

Where is Peterson Joseph on the list?

I've left Peterson Joseph off my depth chart entirely at this moment because of the continued questions about his health and when he'll play again. I personally will be surprised if he is off injured reserve at all this season. At this point he needs to make sure he's healthy enough to leave the next 40-50 years.

Can Nagamura stay healthy?

Another question of a players health. Nagamura was limited to just 17 league games. He'd played 27 in league play the year before. Nagamura just turned 31, and there has to be questions of how much he'll be able to contribute. This question had led many KC fans to wonder if the acquisition of a box to box midfielder was not a key for KC's offseason. KC made no acquisition, at least not yet, so the hope is that Nagamura can provide that bite more this season in midfield.

Which Feilhaber shows up?

Feilhaber had a fantastic playoff run, his game against Houston in KC was his best in a KC uniform. But at times during the season he was invisible and not involved in play. The question is which one will show up for KC the majority of the season. With Zusi set to miss a number of games while away with the US  team, Feilhaber will be expected to fill that playmaking role even more (of course that's assuming Feilhaber isn't called up). KC will need the Feilhaber from the playoffs to show up more.

Sporting Sign Alex Martinez

Sporting KC announced the signing of the signing of midfielder Alex Martinez, the first player from this year's draft class to be signed by KC. Martinez, the 57th pick of the draft, the final one of the third round has had an impressive preseason for KC, appearing in seven of KC's 10 preseason games.

He picked up three assists, two from corners, and one the secondary assist on Sal Zizzo's game winner in KC's 3-2 win over Montreal in their last group game. From the games that I've seen Martinez play in, he fits the midfield role that Peter Vermes likes. He's aggressive and able to create as well. He'll fit in well in the midfield and could look to take some of the minutes that Peterson Joseph was expected to get this year. If not that, he could be a candidate to head be one of the four players that heads on loan to Oklahoma City or Orlando for the USL-Pro season.

The signing gives KC 28 rostered players currently, with the draft picks Adnan Gabeljic and Peter Schmetz still with the team unsigned. That number though still includes Peterson Joseph who has not taken part in preseason play at all and who I expect to be placed on injured reserve because of the issues in diagnosing what caused his collapse last year.

Sporting KC Add Three More in Draft

Sporting KC added three more players fighting for roster spots today in the third and fourth round of the MLS Superdraft. KC picked up players in defense, midfield, and up top, all with an international feel as all three players were born outside of the United States.

With their first pick, the third of the round and 41st overall, Sporting KC selected Peter Schmetz, a center back from the University of California-Santa Barbara. The German is big, 6'6" and according to reports is able to use that size in the air. A lot of the scouting report though talks about his lack of pace.He does appear to be a little injury prone as he has struggled with injuries the last two years, playing just eight games in 2012 and missing the final five games of the 2013 season with a knee injury.

With their second pick of the third round, the 57th overall pick, KC selected Alex Martinez from North Carolina State. The midfielder from Uruguay is the brother of Enzo Martinez, a former midfielder for Real Salt Lake, and Generation Adidas signing who was waived earlier this offseason. Scouts seem to like his 1v1 abilities, but some question his defensive efforts.

With their fourth round pick Sporting selected forward Reinaldo Brenes from Akron. The Costa Rican was the leading scorer for the Zips the last two years. He's appeared for the Costa Rican U17 and U18 teams as well. According to the breakdown on MLS, he'll fit in well with Peter Vermes' team, as there are apparently no "light" training sessions for him.

KC has the international spots that would allow them to accommodate any of the players, but don't have all the roster spots required for it. As Vermes put it, “It’s going to be hard for anyone to make our team at this point.”

All of these guys would be expected to be depth signings but all three will now be headed to Kansas City for preseason, which begins on Friday.
