Honduras in Talks with Sporting to Bring Espinoza to Olympics

Reports out of Honduras are that Roger Espinoza is on the short list of candidates to be one of Honduras' three overage players for this summer's Olympics in Brazil. Honduras, who qualified for the tournament by taking second place at the Olympic qualifying tournament last year are in talks to bring two MLS players, Espinoza, along with Maynor Figueroa from FC Dallas and Romell Quioto of Olimpis as their three allowed overage players for the tournament.

If agreed upon, Espinoza would be going to his second Olympic games, having previously played in the 2012 Olympics in the United Kingdom. Espinoza at the time had used that tournament as the big show for him and is probably a big reason for why he was able to land an contract in England with Wigan Athletic after his contract expired after the 2012 season.

This year's tournament for the men runs from August 4th through the 20th in sites all around Brazil. During the tournament, Kansas City has just three league games (August 7 at Portland, August 13 at Dallas, August 20 vs Vancouver), but has a game five days before tournament at home against Portland on the 31st. KC will likely have other games during that stretch as the CONCACAF Champions League kicks off in August, and they could have a US Open Cup semifinal on August 10th if they were to advance that far. So the four league games plus at least one more in the CCL, so KC would likely be missing Espinoza for at least five games in that stretch.

I can't write about Espinoza's potentially going to the Olympics without sharing his final moment from the 2012 Olympics after his fantastic performance against Brazil, getting sent off and then getting a standing ovation from the neutral fans at Newcastle, a magnificent moment.

Sporting Park Set to Host Olympic Qualifying

Sporting Park is set again to host international matches. The KC Star is reporting that Sporting Park will be announced today as one of the hosts for this fall's CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament. This would be the second cycle in a row that Sporting Park has hosted qualifying, last time; the stadium hosted the semifinals and the final of the tournament. This year though Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake is supposed to be the host of the semifinals and finals.

Sporting Park though will be guaranteed the US team this time, as the Star reports that Sporting Park will get two double headers for Group A, which will contain the US U23 team. The first doubleheader would take place on October 1st; with the second one would be October 3rd. The other teams that will join Group A won't be known until August when the draw takes place.

The stadium has proven over the years to be a good home to the US team as the full men's team is 3-0 at Sporting Park, while the women are 1-0-1 in their two games here. The event means that Sporting Park will continue its streak of hosting a US team each year the stadium has been open.

It could be a chance for KC fans to see goalkeeper Jon Kempin, who has been in camp with the US U23 team on a number of occasions, even earning a call up to the full national team camp in January this past year with a number of U23 players. With the other likely goalkeeper, Cody Cropper potentially in Europe with his club team during the stretch of the tournament, Kempin could be in for plenty of game time.

I know the last time these games were here it was quite enjoyable, even though the US wasn't there, the El Salvador vs Honduras game was really fun.

Some Best Ofs for 2012

I don't normally do any Best Ofs here at the end of the year, but here are a few today.  Some moments of the year, enjoy.

Game of the Year

8/8/12 vs Seattle Sounders

Really was their any other choice?  The game itself lacked a little bit, but the atmosphere and the result combine to make this the game of the year.  A goal from the spot by Kei Kamara led to the loudest cheer I've heard at any Sporting game.  The equalizer from Zach Scott a minute later.  A scoreless extra time period that saw Patrick Ianni sent off led to penalty kicks.  Kei Kamara made the first to put KC up.  Brad Evans equalized.  Roger Espinoza had his attempted saved and Marc Burch gave Seattle the lead.  Matt Besler leveled things and Osvaldo Alonso sent his shot over the bar.  Graham Zusi tried to be cheeky but put his attempt over the bar while Christian Tiffert had his shot saved by Jimmy Nielsen.  Paulo Nagamura stepped up to be the 5th shooter and his shot stopped by Michael Gspurning.  The PK was forced to be retaken though as Gspurning was off his line.  Nagamura buried his second attempt.  Eddie Johnson skied his attempt over the bar and the celebration was on.

Goal of the Year

Julio Cesar vs Toronto FC 6/16

I'm not sure you can strike a ball better than Cesar did here, it's absolutely fantastically struck.

Assist of the year

Peterson Joseph to Jacob Peterson vs Columbus 7/14

I just love the way Joseph goes completely against the movement of the movement of the ball using the outside of his foot to play the ball through to Peterson, a fantastic ball.

Goosebump moment of the year

Roger Espinoza's standing ovation after being red carded at the Olympics

The summer Olympics in London were a coming out party of sorts for Roger Espinoza, he was a known commodity the past two years for Sporting KC in the midfield, but in the Olympics many others found out.  Espinoza had played a fantastic tournament and it was highlighted by his man of the match performance against Brazil in the quarterfinals.  Espinoza set up one and scored another in Honduras' 3-2 loss to the eventual silver medalists.  But it was his play and passion overall that won over the crowd at St. James' Park that day.  He ended the day early picking up a red card, but walked off the field to many congratulations from players and a standing ovation from the St. James' Park crowd.  Many fans expected Espinoza to be leaving KC after this season, the Olympics just confirmed that and Espinoza will be plying his trade in England starting in January.

Off field moment of the year

Lance Armstrong/Livestrong Saga

With Lance Armstrong being stripped of his Tour de France titles for doping and the on going discussion over that, talk eventually turned to Livestrong Sporting Park.  KC's home stadium that has the name of the foundation that Armstrong founded to help people during their fight with cancer.  The debate on whether to keep the name or change it has been one that has been discussed not just by soccer fans, but by sports fans as well as casual fans, especially locally.  So far, publicly Sporting Club has made statements about the separation between the Livestrong organization and Armstrong.  Whether Sporting will end up keeping the name, or eventually switch to another name is something that will still have to be watched.

Low moment of the year

4-0 loss to Philadelphia 6/23

While season ending loss in the series to Houston is a downer, the low point of the year was Sporting's 4-0 dismantling that they took at the hands of the Philadelphia Union.  Sporting conceded in the first minute on a Jack McInerney goal and conceded again in the 42nd.  Goals in the 81st by Lionard Pajoy from the spot and from Antoine Hoppenot in the 87th sealed the rout.  KC never looked into the game and desperately missed Matt Besler who was out recovering from his appendectomy.  What made the loss all that much wosre was that while KC was 9-2-2 heading into that game, Philadelphia was 1-8-2 sitting on 5 points, 24 behind KC when the teams took the field.

Moment of anger that was quickly forgotten

MLS Cup 2000 trophy

As one of my wants/wishes for 2012 I wanted to get the 2000 MLS Cup trophy back from Hunt Sports' Group.  James from Sporting Times started a grass roots movement to attempt to get the trophy back.  Turns out the trophy was in storage and had been put there during the renovations of Arrowhead Stadium.  During the process, it came out that one of the requirements for selling the team was that HSG got to keep the 2000 MLS Cup trophy.  Clark Hunt was going to have the trophy put into a portion of the Hall of Fame at Arrowhead.  But first, it would spend the 2012 season with Sporting KC and then the team would receive a replica to keep.  I saw the MLS Cup trophy twice I believe at the stadium, both times in the Members' Club shortly after the announcement was made.  The trophy was supposed to "tour" the stadium throughout the season, but I never heard anything else about it's travels.  The good news is that winning the Open Cup helped people to forget the 2000 trophy a bit.

Espinoza has Monster Game as Honduras Bow Out

Honduras may be leaving the Olympics today after their 3-2 loss to Brazil in the quarterfinals of the soccer tournament, but they'll leave with their heads high, especially Roger Espinoza.  Espinoza had an amazing game and earned himself a standing ovation from the neutral crowd at St. James' Park after he got sent off for his second yellow card in second half stoppage time.

Honduras grabbed a shock lead in the 12th minute, and it was Espinoza that started the play by winning the ball of the Brazilian attacked.  Espinoza played the ball to Maynor Figueroa who played it into the path of Seattle Sounders player, Mario Martinez, who hit a splendid volley into the net.  In the 33rd minute things got much more difficult for Honduras when Wilmer Crisanto was sent off for a second yellow card offense leaving Honduras with 57 minutes to kill while down a man.  It took only 5 for Brazil to take advantage of it, as Leandro Damiao pounced on a chance after Honduras failed to clear their lines.  The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1.

In the second half the Hondurans came out and quickly grabbed the lead back.  Espinoza collected the ball on the right, then cut inside and let loose with a shot along the ground that made it inside the far post putting Honduras back on top a 2-1.  Only 2 minutes later though Brazil was back level after a foul in the box, Neymar stepped up and buried the PK to tie it.  Brazil continued to pressure but looked less than impressive while doing it against 10 men Honduras.  In the 60th minute, Brazil grabbed the lead as Damiao finished off a combination play between Neymar and Oscar.  After that goal Honduras had a few chances to equalize, including one from Espinoza off a corner.  After the initial header was not held, Espinoza reacted first to the loose ball, but a Brazilian defender got a foot out too and the ball went out.

While Brazil had the better talent and was up a man, Honduras never really looked completely out of the game and it wouldn't have been surprising to see them equalize.  In stoppage time though Espinoza got a second booking for a tackle from behind and got his marching orders.  On his way off though he got handshakes from the Brazilian players and a standing ovation from the crowd in the stands in a moment that gave me chills personally.

The performance by Espinoza was epic and will certainly generate a few calls for Robb Heineman about the availability of getting Espinoza.  I'm pretty sure that Espinoza is currently in the last year of his contract so KC could possibly look to cash in on that now.  And it wasn't just this game, the 3 games he played in the tournament he played very well.  Today's performance was the most proud I've felt for a Sporting KC Wizards player representing their country since Jimmy Conrad's performance in the 2006 World Cup.

Check out his goal below.

Espinoza Impresses in Honduras Win

Honduras pulled off the biggest upset of the Olympic soccer tournament today, taking out one of the gold medal favorites, Spain 1-0 at St. James' Park in Newcastle.  The loss eliminated the Spaniards from the tournament after their loss to Japan in their first group game.  Meanwhile, the win by Honduras puts them in a very good position to advance to the next round.

Sporting KC midfielder, Roger Espinoza, had himself a great performance for Honduras, including assisting on the lone goal of the game.  He ran himself ragged for 72 minutes before being subbed out looking exhausted.  Espinoza picked up a yellow card early in the game that suspended him for Honduras' final group stage game against Japan.  And he seemed to kick it up to a new level knowing that he'd be unable to play in the finale. Shortly after the yellow card Espinoza set up the one goal.  Espinoza combined with DC United midfielder Andy Najar on the wing and Espinoza's cross found the head of Jerry Bengtson who beat David De Gea.

Honduras continued to play extremely well holding off but it took them a lot of luck to hold of Spain as well.  The Spaniards hit the bar a few times and probably should have had at least 1 PK in the second half.  On top of that, Jose Mendoza had a fantastic game.  Espinoza should have doubled Honduras' lead himself in the 51st, but his open header hit the post and bounced back into play.

Honduras held on in the end, using some of the theatrics that US fans have grown to loath from many of the central American countries when leading, but Honduras got the result.

Honduras can guarantee themselves in the knock out phase with a draw against the Japanese, but could still go through with a loss if Morocco doesn't beat Spain.  If Morocco does win while Honduras loses, things could get a little more complicated with all the tie breakers.  Honduras finishing second would likely seem them meet Brazil in the quarterfinals.  Should Honduras advance, the quarterfinals would be August 4th, four days before the US Open Cup final.  Should Honduras fall there Espinoza could be back to play in the final against the Sounders, if Honduras make the semifinals, they're the day before the final.

The other aspect of the performance today is the fact that it's the second biggest window Espinoza's ever been in next to the World Cup in 2010.  And Espinoza and Honduras are having a much better Olympics than their World Cup.  Espinoza has himself in the shop window and is impressing well.  I would not be surprised to see Sporting KC get some more offers for Espinoza's services.

Collin, Espinoza, and Angevine News

Some player news for you today.  First, more on the injury to Aurelien Collin from last night.  Collin posted on Twitter that night that he had suffered a facial fracture after his challenge on Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien.  Sporting KC announced today that Collin is set to miss 1-2 weeks because of the injury.  When he comes back, he'll end up wearing a mask to protect the injury for a little while after that.  Collin though seems to think that he can come back quicker than that, and seems to want to play this weekend.  Tonight on This Week in Sporting, Collin also confirmed that he had suffered a small concussion and blacked out momentarily after the collision as well.  A scary moment.  In the mean time, with Collin out that would seem to put Lawrence Olum into the starting spot along with Matt Besler.  That isn't horrible as it will give the two time together before the US Open Cup final on the 8th which Collin was set to miss anyway due to suspension.

Espinoza and Honduras

Roger Espinoza and Honduras opened their Olympic campaign today with a game against Morocco in Glasgow.  Espinoza started for the Honduran team and played the entire game in the midfield, picking up a late yellow.  Honduras got 2 goals from New England Revolution forward Jerry Bengtson after falling behind 1-0 early.  Morocco scored an equalizer shortly after Bengtson gave Honduras the lead and the game ended 2-2.  Honduras' next game is on Sunday when they take on Spain at St. James Park.  Spain lost their opener, 1-0 against Japan, and one of the pre-tournament  favorites will be looking to avoid putting themselves on the edge of elimination in the game.

Angevine Officially Signed

Today Sporting KC officially announced the signing of local goalkeeper, Scott Angevine.  Angevine becomes the 4th goalkeeper on Kansas City's roster along with Jimmy Nielsen, Eric Kronberg, and Jon Kempin.  He also becomes the 7th player from the Kansas City area on Sporting's roster, joining Kempin, Matt Besler, Kevin Ellis, Kyle Miller, Seth Sinovic, and Michael Thomas.  The signing puts 29 players on Sporting KC's roster at this time, one short of the roster maximum of 30, but that's not counting Oriol Rosell, who is expected to sign. That likely means that unless KC makes other roster moves, they're not going to be making any other moves.

Bittersweet Day for Kamara

There was some good news and some bad news today involving Kei Kamara.  The good news first, Kamara, along with midfielder Roger Espinoza were named as reserves for the MLS All Star team.  In regards to the MLS game tonight it means little, neither one traveled to Philadelphia for the game, they weren't part of the roster.  The reason they were named as all stars is because it is part off the collective bargaining agreement between MLS and the players union.  There had to be 13 more players named as all stars.  Kamara and Espinoza earned the calls for Sporting.  What that means for the players is that they'll get their bonus for being an "all star" which is certainly a good thing for those guys.

Espinoza wouldn't have been able to play anyway as he's in London with Honduras for the Olympics.  They kick off their Olympic campaign tomorrow against Morrocco in Glasgow Scotland.

On the opposite side of things, some bad news for Kamara personally (but good news for Sporting KC).  Today, Kamara was suspended from the Sierra Leone national team "indefinitely."  Kamara and the national team captain, Ibrahim Kargbo have been suspended for having "frequently shown contempt to the Sport Minister Paul Kamara and football officials.  The pair were also accused of making inciting, derogatory statements and threatening remarks on air against football authorities."

It's the third time that Kamara has been suspended by his national team for comments made about the FA and sports authority.  It seems that the comments this time were in response to the refunding of air tickets, match fees and bonuses and other things.  Kamara has usually made his comments via Twitter usually after his trip and the last one was really no different when he made comments about the country being behind the team but not necessarily the FA and sporting authority joining the rest of the country behind the team.

It's a sad thing for Kamara and his international career but a good thing for Sporting KC, as Kamara will now not miss time heading to Sierra Leone for the Leone Stars African Cup of nations qualifier against Tunisia in September (7-9) and October (12-14).  In a critical part of the season it will be nice to have Kamara available for selection.

Rosell Signing and Espinoza/Honduras Warm Up

The rumors have been around for a little while now that former Barcelona B defender, Oriol Rosell was signing with Sporting Kansas City.  He'd trialed with the team earlier this year, then was released from his contract with Barca B with a deal in MLS being on the table.  That led to the news in Spain that Sporting was the MLS target.  Today, things got cleared up it would seem.  First, Rosell himself posted on Twitter that he'd signed with Sporting Kansas City.  A little bit later in the day, Robb Heineman posted that Rosell had been signed by Kansas City. Coming from the president of the club, no reason to not believe that Rosell is signed and on the way soon.  KC's beat writer for the Star, Tod Palmer though says the deal IS in place, but not finalized yet.  I don't doubt that both Heineman and Palmer is write.  Rosell has probably signed his deal with Sporting KC, but everything probably has to be finalized completely with the league at this point.  Once that's complete, then KC will "officially" announce the deal.

Espinoza and Honduras win warm up

After playing for Kansas City in Columbus, Roger Espinoza took off for Europe to join the Honduran national team.  Today Honduras played Egypt in a friendly in France ahead of the Olympics in London.  Honduras topped the Egyptians 1-0 thanks to a goal from Maynor Figueroa off a free kick.  Espinoza started and played 90 minutes for Honduras in their warm up match.

Espinoza, the Open Cup, and a Double Header

Catching up on some news that was announced today regarding Sporting Kansas City.

Espinoza Named to Olympic Team

Honduras named their team for this summer's Olympics in London.  Sporting KC midfielder, Roger Espinoza has been named as one of the team's 3 overage players.  Honduras is grouped with Spain, Morocco, and Japan.  The three group games are July 26th vs Morocco at Hampden Park in Glasgow, July 29th vs Spain at St. James Park in Newcastle, and then on August 1st vs Japan at City of Coventry Stadium in Coventry.  Should Honduras advance all the way to the medal round they'd also have games on August 4th, 7th, and 10th or 11th.

During that same stretch, Kansas City has games on July 28th against Columbus, the August 1st friendly vs Stoke City, August 4th at New England, and August 11th vs DC.  Should KC also make the US Open Cup final, Espinoza could also miss the final on August 7th or 8th.  Depending on when he has to report he could also miss the July 24th game vs Montpellier and the July 21st game vs New England.  In all Espinoza could miss about 4 league games, and the US Open Cup final if Honduras get into the knock out rounds and KC qualifies.

I couldn't be happier for Espinoza to get to represent his country in the Olympics especially after also representing them in the World Cup.  But he's been one of KC's best players this season and will be a tough hole to fill for Sporting.

US Open Cup Semifinal Draw Announced

Today US Soccer announced the draw for the semifinals of the US Open Cup.  Starting in the semifinals, US Soccer went back to the blind bid process that had been present in previous years of the tournament.  Should Sporting KC defeat the Dayton Dutch Lions this coming Tuesday they will play the winner of Philadelphia and Harrisburg.  If Philadelphia wins, then KC is actually going on the road for the semifinals, as the Union out bid Sporting to host the semifinal.  If Harrisburg pulls their third upset of an MLS side, then KC would host the City Islanders at Livestrong Sporting Park.

It's a little surprising that KC was out bid for the semifinals, I would have expected the only team that would have out bid KC was Seattle.  But maybe KC is holding off on a big bid for the semifinals in preparation for a big bid for the finals should KC make it to the finals.

Game in New England Now a Double Header

New England made an announcement today that involves KC's trip to the Northeast on August 4th.  KC vs New England on that date will now have an "under card".  I put that in quotes because the under card is likely to bring out more fans than the game itself.  The under card, that kicks off at 4:30 EST, will see AC Milan take on Brazilian club Cruzeiro on the turf at Gillette Stadium.  There's been no change to the start time of Sporting's game though, there will just potentially be more fans in the stands at Gillette that hang around for the game between KC and New England.

Espinoza a Candidate for Honduran Overage Spot

Earlier this year, all the talk was about Sporting KC missing Teal Bunbury during the summer during the Olympics in London, but then the US crashed out of qualifying in Nashville, which will keep Bunbury with KC during the summer. The loss of Bunbury would have been rough, but not unrecoverable, what will happen though could be a lot rougher for KC to deal with.

With Honduras having qualified for the Olympics, rumors have already started to swirl on who Honduras' 3 overage players will be. And one name that has come up, is Sporting KC midfielder, Roger Espinoza. Losing Espinoza would be a big blow to KC, especially because through 4 games has been one of KC's MVPs. He's done well growing into his role in the midfield and has avoided picking up yellows for bad tackles this year.

The Olympic soccer occurs between July 26th through August 11th. During that time frame, KC have 3 games, July 28th vs the Crew, 8/4 at New England, and 8/11 vs DC. But that would require Honduras to qualify for the medal games. Of course with camps and stuff before hand and recovery afterwards, Espinoza would possibly also miss 7/18 at Houston, 7/21 vs New England, and 8/18 at Toronto. The last one again in the unlikely event Honduras make the medal games. Still that's the potential of 6 games, almost a 6th of the season. For a guy that's played such a big role so far, it'd be a big loss. Paulo Nagamura would be the likely replacement, and while he has the experience factor, he's not at the level of Espinoza.

Mexico Win Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

While much of Kansas City spent their evening watching the University of Kansas, there were just over 10,000 inside of Livestrong Sporting Park set to watch Mexico and Honduras square off in the finals of Olympic qualifying. And while there were only 10,000 it certainly didn't sound or feel like it while in the stands. Honduras came out with a good game plan, playing defensively and trying to hit Mexico on the counter or set plays. Mexico consistently attacked Honduras, but the defense of the Hondurans held firm. Early in the second half, Honduras finally capitalized on a set play, as a free kick was headed in by Romell Quioto to give Honduras a shocking 1-0 lead.

After the goal, Honduras started to sit deeper and deeper trying to kill the game off. Honduras' keeper had to come up big a few times. But just as it seemed like Honduras might find a way to hold on, Marco Fabian let fly with a rocket from 25 yards out that went into the net tying the game. At this point it was all one way traffic for Mexico, and they looked the most likely to find a winner in regulation. In stoppage time things got worse for Honduras, as Luis Garrido picked up a second yellow, putting Honduras down to 10 men.

In extra time, the domination by Mexico continued. Only a save off the line by Andy Najar kept Mexico from taking the lead in the first extra time period. In the second period of extra time though, Honduras' defense finally gave in, and it was US citizen, Miguel Ponce who scored the winner in the 116th. Honduras though continued to make things harder for themselves, especially as they head to London. Showing a lack of discipline, Wilmer Crisanto picked up a second yellow, and Honduras ended the game with 9 men.

In the end, though, the three games of soccer at Livestrong Sporting Park this weekend, were fantastic. As someone who attended all 3 games as a neutral I can't say that I was disappointed at all. There was a high level of play on the field and the crowds were some of the best that have been at LSP in it's short history.

Exceeding Expectations

I went into yesterday's Olympic qualifying games at Livestrong Sporting Park, just looking for a little entertainment as a neutral. I ended up seeing a great game between El Salvador and Honduras and a good performance by Mexico in their win over Canada.

The opening act ended up being much better than the main event. Honduras and El Salvador kicked us off, and within a minute, Honduras was in front through Antony Lozano. The 18 year old striker who plays in Spain collected a cross and was able to get it into the corner to give Honduras the lead. El Salvador then proceeded to take the game to Honduras, but the Honduran defense held strong. On the attack, Honduras worked almost religiously through DC midfielder Andy Najar trying to add to their lead. In the 77th minute, Milton Molina tied things up with a goal that sent the El Salvador fans in the east and west stands into a frenzy.

Extra time was just as exciting, Gerson Rodas, a substitute for Honduras scored in the 101st to give Honduras a 2-1 lead. But that goal was canceled out just after the start of the second overtime period through Edwin Sanchez on a header. Rodas though had the final word, scoring a second goal in the 114th to give Honduras the win in an exciting game in front of a very boisterous crowd at LSP.

The second game didn't have near the split in the fans, as it was clear Mexico was the "home" team. The Mexicans seemed to just be toying with Canada at times. Marco Fabian gave Mexico the lead in the 20th minute and Mexico looked to be cruising. In the 31st though Canada got a life line, as Marcus Haber headed in a cross to tie the game. But that tied game only lasted a minute, as Alan Pulido scored to give Mexico a 2-1 lead. Miguel Ponce added a goal in the 59th to seal the game. A red card to Doneil Henry in the 77th ended any hopes for Canada.

In the end the under card was the more exciting match, but in the end I'm very glad I didn't skip these games.

Why I Still Plan to Attend the Olympic Qualifiers

A lot of the luster for the Olympic Qualifiers this weekend in KC wore off on Monday night, when the US drew 3-3 with El Salvador, knocking the Americans out of the tournament before they even got to Kansas City. Instead this weekend in KC we're going to see Mexico, Canada, El Salvador, and Honduras take the field in the semifinals on Saturday with the winners of those games meeting on Monday night.

Since the USA's exit I've seen a massive influx of people willing and wanting to dump their tickets that they've already purchased. I know that many of my friends are in this group, deciding instead to spend the weekend doing other things, including watching the Final 4 with KU since the US is out. Since I couldn't care less about KU, or college basketball in general, I personally still plan on being out there on Saturday, and I plan on having a good time.

Here's why I'm still planning to be out at Livestrong Sporting Park on Saturday (and probably Monday). Very rarely any more do I go to a game, sit, watch, and enjoy myself. Any more when I attend games they are Sporting KC games. And while I stand, sing, and enjoy myself at those games, they're not always the most relaxing experience in my life. I spend a lot of time over analyzing stuff that the players do on the field. Not to mention the anxiety of it being my team and always having that nagging feeling (no matter how well KC is playing) that we'll lose the game.

I'm looking forward to going to the games still hanging out with some people I know, and not having a care in the world about the teams on the field. Just going to a game and enjoying watching the game in person. The last time I did that was probably last year's Gold Cup game between Canada and Panama, and even that wasn't without some stress, especially since Canada led until late, and if the Canadians had held on and the US beat Guadeloupe, the US would have won the group. Before that, the last game I just went and watched was the Club America vs Chivas game at Arrowhead a few years back. Before that it was Charlton Athletic vs Aston Villa at The Valley back in 2004, so very rarely do I go and just watch games.

I'm going to enjoy getting out to Livestrong Sporting Park, maybe bringing a grill, cooking some food, having a beer, then going inside, finding a nice shady spot in the Members Stand, take a seat and enjoy some soccer. If you're still planning on going, feel free to join me. We can mock the other teams and commiserate the USA's exit while we watch.

US Collapse Out of Olympic Qualifying

Well Saturday and Monday in Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park just got a little less interesting for quite a few fans in KC. Tonight in Nashville, in epic fashion, the US U23 team drew with El Salvador 3-3 on a goal in the 95th minute of the game after some very poor clock management by the US team.

The US were handed a lifeline to avoid Mexico in Kansas City earlier in the night, when Cuba got a shocking draw with Canada, meaning with a win the US would win the group. The US grabbed the lead inside the first few minutes through Terrance Boyd and the US looked set for a good win to win their group. As with the rest of the tournament though, the US central defense and goalkeeping let the US down and in a matter of a few minutes in the middle of the half the US were down 2-1 to El Salvador.

In the second half the US looked better, and El Salvador sat back and started to bunker, a tactic that actually kept the USA's poor defense out of the eye. And finally the US was able to break down the El Salvador bunker, mainly through Freddy Adu. Adu set up Boyd for a second and shortly later set up Joe Corona to give the US the lead. The US tried to kill the game off and looked like they had. But as the 4 minute mark of stoppage time hit, Brek Shea won a ball in the US' end and instead of sending the ball into row Z at the opposite end of the field tried to play Boyd and gave the ball away. Then as El Salvador attacked, the US defense stepped back allowing space and a routine shot that Sean Johnson should have saved, hit off his hands and into the net giving El Salvador a draw, sending them to Kansas City and the US home in embarrassing fashion.

For those like me, that have already bought tickets for Saturday and Monday, good luck getting rid of them. With KU in the Final 4 that day, you're going to struggle to find someone willing to buy those tickets.

In Sporting KC related news, Teal Bunbury was an unused sub in the game and will now return to Kansas City to play with Sporting.

Bunbury and Rest of US Team Poor in Loss to Canada

The talk from many US fans heading into Olympic qualifying was that this US team could potentially medal at the Olympics this summer in London. Now the team faces a real possibility of not even making it to the semifinals in Kansas City next weekend after the U23 team played very poorly losing 2-0 to Canada tonight.

With Juan Agudelo out for the tournament with a torn meniscus Teal Bunbury got the start at the center forward position for the US national team. Bunbury had an unimpressive 56 minutes before being subbed out for Terrance Boyd. Things didn't get better for the US though, as Canada scored a goal off a corner kick as Bill Hamid didn't jump to claim the corner instead staying on the ground waiting for the ball to come to him. The Canadian forward leaped and headed the ball into the net. The US then threw the kitchen sink at the Canadians but couldn't create many good chances against Canada. Late on, Canada scored a second, again off a corner, as Ike Opara and Hamid combined to make a mess of the second goal.

While Bunbury had a poor game, he certainly was not the worst of the US players. That honor has to fall to Hamid or Opara who both had really poor performances.

That loss leaves the US sitting in 3rd place in their group with 1 game left. Canada and El Salvador are tied for first on 4 points, and Cuba is 4th with 0 points. That means the US needs a win on Monday against El Salvador to just qualify for the semifinals in KC. With Canada playing Cuba, Canada is likely to win the group. What that means is that should the US defeat El Salvador on Monday, the US will likely get a semifinal match up against Mexico. A match up for qualification to get to London. The match up that the US likely didn't want at this point in the qualification process. A huge disappointment of a performance by the US tonight.

U23's Beat Cuba

The US U23 team got their Olympic qualifying campaign started on the right foot with a 6-0 win over Cuba in their first group game. Joe Corona of Club Tijuana in Mexico scored a hattrick, while Juan Agudelo, Freddy Adu, and an own goal rounded out the scoring against the Cubans. Cuba spent a majority of the game down to 10 men after an early red card when Agudelo took an elbow to the face.

Sporting KC forward, Teal Bunbury came on as a half time sub for Agudelo. Bunbury had a few decent opportunities, all of which ended up being saved by the Cuban goalkeeper, including a fairly decent finger tip save. Bunbury's touch looked better than it had against DC, but Bunbury also had more space to work with. Hopefully he can use this as a way to boost his confidence.

The win for the US puts them on top of group A with 3 points, El Salvador and Canada played to a 0-0 draw earlier in the night sit tied for second on 1 point, and Cuba is 4th on 0 points. The US take the field again on Saturday when they'll take on Canada. A win would go a long way towards clinching qualification for the semifinals in Kansas City.

Bunbury News and Reserves Draw

US Soccer officially announced their 20 man roster for the upcoming Olympic qualifiers in Nashville, and potentially Kansas City. It's basically the same lineup that was named last week to the US camp. The only difference is that Joshua Gatt was recalled by his club team, and was replaced by Philadelphia defender, Sheanon Williams. Those 20 players will take on Cuba, Canada, and El Salvador in group play. Should they finish first or second, they'll advance to the semifinals and finals in Kansas City. The semifinal match is the important one, as winning that game clinches you a spot in the Olympics.

Out in Salt Lake today, some of Bunbury's teammates took the field against Real Salt Lake in the first game of the reserve league season for KC. Salt Lake grabbed a lead in the 58th minute, but late in the second half, Korede Aiyegbusi sprunk Dom Dwyer on a break away that Dwyer finished to give the Rangers a 1-1 draw.

Bunbury Called Into Olympic Camp and Silly Rumors

Caleb Porter announced a 19 man training camp roster for the US U23 team ahead of Olympic qualifying in 10 days. Porter will add a 20th player after he is cleared by his club. Sporting KC forward, Teal Bunbury has been included as one of 5 forwards on the roster. Bunbury joins Juan Agudelo, Terrence Boyd, Joe Gyau, and Brek Shea as the forward line for the US team.

The training camp begins tomorrow for the US team and goes through their opener in group play in Nashville against Cuba. Bunbury could miss up to 3 games while with the Olympic team. If he reports this week, he'll miss the home opener against New England. He'll also miss next weekend's game against FC Dallas, and if the US advance to the semifinals and finals, the 4/1 game against Chivas USA. Fans can argue the blow this causes to the team, especially after Bunbury's less than stellar performance against DC this past weekend. Bunbury's call up puts CJ Sapong into the starting lineup, and could open playing time up for Soony Saad and Dom Dwyer.

On opposite teams, KC is getting a bit of a boost next weekend, as Shea will not be available for Dallas when they take their trip to KC. Chance Myers is likely breathing a bit of a sigh of relief while at the same time wishing he could get revenge for last year when Shea ran over Myers. The following weekend, Chivas will be without Jorge Villafaña in their game against KC.

Rumor of Sporting KC after former Madrid defender?

File this under totally baseless and extremely unlikely. Mirror Football (h/t The Daily Wiz) is reporting that KC is interested in Michel Salgado. Salgado, a right back is currently frozen out at relegation threatened Blackburn Rovers, even though he claims that he's recovered from an injury. The Mirror is reporting that KC and Toronto after after the 36 year old's services.

With Chance Myers firmly planted in the starting role, and Sporting paying Michael Harrington over $100K while sitting on the bench it seems unlikely KC would look to bring in another right back. And that's not including Kevin Ellis in the conversation.

Salgado, a former Spanish international that appeared over 200 times for Real Madrid just doesn't seem to fit with the younger team that Sporting is putting out. He'd automatically become the oldest player on the team, and would be the 3rd oldest player to ever appear for KC should he actually play.

H/T to The Front Men

Trinidad and Tobago has named their training squad in preparations for the Olympic qualifying coming up in March. Sporting KC defender, Daneil Cyrus has been named to the TnT squad that is currently training in Port of Spain in Trinidad. The team is preparing to be in Group B of Olympic qualifying with Honduras, Panama, and Mexico in Los Angeles which begins on March 22nd. Should Trinidad finishing as one of the top two teams, they'll qualifying for the semifinals in Kansas City with a chance to qualify for the 2012 London games. Before going to LA though, Trinidad ends this camp with a friendly against the Finland national team.

Pricing for Olympic Qualifiers Out

US Supporter's Section tickets went on sale right before Christmas, now today, Sporting KC announced the rest of the pricing structure for the tournament at LIVESTRONG Sporting KC. There are 3 levels of ticket buying, you can buy the series, single game advanced, and at the gate. The pricing is also pretty competitive, good pricing, anywhere from $28 a game to $220 a game. There are a few interesting aspects to the pricing though. There is one section around 3/4ths of the stadium for front row access in each section except on the West side of the stadium. The series tickets look to be especially great value, getting you in to both matches on Saturday and the final Monday will cost you $56 in the Member's Stand. Not bad for 3 games of soccer. The other interesting aspect is that the member's club has been divided some more on the East side of the stadium. The sections match up with the section in the group above members stand in the stadium. It's interesting the way that CONCACAF has Sporting laying out the stadium for the games. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders on the 9th, they go on sale to the general public two days later.
