Gardner Joins SKC Academy, Gomez and Cyrus Return to MLS - Former SKC Wizards Update

Another week of former player updates. First, former KC defender, Josh Gardner has retired from one man volleyball and has taken a job as the U14 academy coach for the Sporting KC academy as the team restructured a little bit and got each of their teams a separate coach.

Also this past week, the transfer window for MLS closed, and two former KC players are back in MLS. Herculez Gomez who signed with Toronto after they acquired his MLS rights from KC has returned from Mexico, while Daneil Cyrus, who had played with the team on loan in 2011 has returned to the league on loan again, this time to the Chicago Fire.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Chhetri Brace Leads India in World Cup Qualifying - Former SKC Wizards Update

It seems crazy, but qualifying or the 2018 World Cup in Russia has kicked off. The Asian Federation got the process started with their lowest ranked teams playing in the first round of qualifying. This included Sunil Chhetri and the 171st ranked India. They were matched up with 186th seeded Nepal. In the first leg in India, Chhetri scored a pair of second half goals to lead India to a 2-0 win. In the second leg, India again held Nepal scoreless and advanced 2-0 on aggregate. They will now move on to the second round of qualifying.

Comets Season Ends on a Very Sour Note

The Missouri Comets season came to an end today at the Independence Events Center today at the hands of the Baltimore Blast in the Eastern Conference Finals. Baltimore will now move on to take on the Monterrey Flash for the MASL title.

Missouri grabbed the only goal of the first quarter as Kiel Williams found the back of the net to give the Comets the lead late in the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Blast though as they scored three unanswered over the first 12 minutes of the quarter to take the lead 3-1. Alain Matingou with just over two and a half minutes left to cut the lead to 3-2. The Blast immediately responded though to make it 4-2 before John Sosa scored in the final second of the quarter to make it 4-3 Baltimore as the teams headed into the half time break.

In the third quarter, the Blast extended their lead to 5-3 early in the quarter on the power play. Missouri though finally got the offense going a bit and were able to level the game at 5-5 in the span of a couple minutes thanks to goals by Bryan Perez and Josh Gardner. Before the end of the quarter though the Blast had extended their lead to two again at 7-5 leaving the Comets with a hill to climb in the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw the Comets try again and again to find the net but unable to as the Blast killed the clock off. In the final five minutes though things got crazy. Baltimore hit the Comets on the counter to make it 8-5. Missouri switched to the sixth attacker and Gardner almost immediately cut it to a two goal game at 8-6. Then a few minutes later, with a minute 15 left, Leo Gibson got a goal off a restart to cut the lead to one at 8-7. Unfortunately that's where the rally stopped. Twelve seconds after the goal, Baltimore made it 9-7 and then 11 seconds later finished off the scoring at 10-7 to the Blast.

Immediately after the goal, the Comets cool was collectively gone. Sosa picked up a red card for foul and abusive language to the referee. Then after believing he'd been fouled and not receiving a call, Brian Harris came in with dangerous tackle and picked himself up a red card with 12 seconds left to end the Comets season on an extremely sour note.

And unfortunately that wasn't the end of it as after the game ended, Andre Braithwaite did this to Pat Healey.

Post by Eddie Trujillo.

If not for how stunned I think most of the players were about it happening Braithwaite likely would have seen himself fighting the entire Blast team. And based on Josh Gardner's reaction (he was talking to Healey at the time) I don't think Braithwaite would have gotten a ton of support.

To the Comets credit they responded to Braithwaite's actions fairly quickly, announcing "The Comets organization announces that Andre Braithwaite has been released from the team effective immediately."

The team waiving him isn't a surprise at all based on the above video, a stupid move by the player. He'll likely also receive some sort of lengthy suspension from the league, if he's not outright banned from it for a while.

In the end though, Braithwaite's and the actions of other players at the end of the game ends a really amazing season very sourly.

Comets Roll Past Milwaukee, Now Head to Baltimore

The Missouri Comets used a big second quarter to help them top the Milwaukee Wave and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals where they'll play Baltimore in a home and away series starting tomorrow in Baltimore. Missouri scored four unanswered goals in the quarter and added two more in the third as Missouri won the game 8-2 to advance to play the Blast.

The two teams traded goals in the first quarter, with Vahid Assadpour's goal just over three minutes in being canceled out by Tony Walls only a minute later.  The second quarter is where the Comets really jumped on Milwaukee. Just 13 seconds in, Kiel Williams scored to put the Comets back on top. Bryan Perez made it 3-1 right before the half way point after some great work by Alain Matingou. Later in the half, the Comets had their first of three power plays after the Wave were penalized a second time for a substitution violation. Josh Gardner ended up scoring the goal with just under five remaining in the half as his shot went off Victor Quiroz and into the net. Assadpour finished off the scoring in the first half off an assist from Leo Gibson with just 10 seconds left in the half.

The third quarter saw Missouri again jump out early and score another early goal as Brian Harris got on the board with a shot from distance just three and a half minutes in. The Comets extended their lead to 7-1 on another power play goal, this time with Gardner playing provider and setting up Gibson for his first goal of the night. The fourth quarter saw the Wave almost immediately switch to the sixth attacker, pulling Nick Vorberg as soon as the Wave won possession back. The extra attacker paid off with more possession for the Wave and they found an early goal through former Comet, Stefan St Louis who did a good job dancing around two defenders at the top of the box before firing past Danny Waltman to make it 7-2. That's as close as the Wave would get though. They weren't able to take advantage of the extra attacker any more, and around the half way point picked up another blue card. While the Comets pushed to attack, looking for another goal, the Comets also were able to kill two more minutes keeping the Wave pinned in their own end for much of it. Finally with under a minute left the Comets were able to break the Wave's sixth attacker pressure and find a goal as Assadpour finished off his hattrick burying a shot in the far corner.

With the win the Comets will now play two games this weekend against the Baltimore Blast, Friday in Baltimore and Sunday at the Independence Events Center. After 18 days off, the Comets will now play three games in a four day span with two trips halfway across the country in between; it'll certainly put their legs to the test.

Duke on Trial with OKC - Former SKC Wizards Update

The MLS season is supposed to start in a little over a week, which means more former Sporting players will be back in action. While that's going on, another looks set to attempt to continue his career in the lower divisions, Christian Duke, who had been in camp with Sporting KC for a while was in the Oklahoma City Energy squad today that took on HB Køge from Denmark. Duke would continue the tradition of the Energy being Sporting OKC becoming another former player to play under former player, Jimmy Nielsen should he sign.

Meanwhile, another former draft pick was back in town this past week. Michal Mravec, Sporting's third round pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental draft was back in own with the Tacoma Stars to play the Missouri Comets at the Independence Events Center. It wasn't a great night for Mravec or the Stars. Tacoma lost the game 17-1, and in the fourth quarter, Mravec picked up a blue card for a pushing foul on Comets Leo Gibson. As Mravec was walking to the box, pleading his case, he grabbed he hand of referee Ron Cory and looked to attempt to show him what happened, mimicking kicking out. Mravec struck Cory in the shin while the referee reached for his red card. You can see the video of it below.

Comets Finish Regular Season Unbeaten

The Missouri Comets closed out the regular season today against the Tacoma Stars at the Independence Events Center. It took the Comets a little while to get going, but when they did they played Tacoma completely off the field on their way to a 17-1 win over the Stars.

The Comets came out in the first quarter and controlled the game, but the Stars did a good job of staying with the Comets and keeping them off the board for much of the first quarter. Unfortunately for the Stars they couldn't hold out forever, and in the final five minutes were completely undone by Leo Gibson and the Comets high pressure. Gibson, on his way to a career day scored all four of the Comets goals in the final five minutes of the quarter. First winning the ball on a turnover in the Stars end and scoring. Less than a minute later, Gibson found himself unmarked at the back post after a good run down the wing by Alain Matingou. The Frenchman picked out Gibson who had an easy tap in to double the lead. Gibson then took matters into his own hands, beating his man on the dribble before firing a shot into the net. The final tally of the first quarter came in the final minute. After a foul in the Comets end, Missouri quickly moved the ball up field where it finally came to Josh Gardner. Again Gibson was unmarked at the back post, and again he was picked out and just had to redirect the ball into the net to put the Comets on top 4-0 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Comets didn't take so long to get things going. Less than a minute in, Brian Harris was the first one to react to a first to a loose ball near the yellow line. Harris fired a shot on goal that Aaron Anderson didn't see until late and before he could react it was past him to make it 5-0. Merely seconds later, Josh Gardner made it 6-0. Stefan Stokic led a counter, firing a shot off the wall. The rebound collected the rebound and put it away for his first of the day. Gibson returned the favor for the earlier goal to Matingou just before the four minute mark. He collected the ball near the yellow line and touched it into the middle for Matingou who hit a bullet with his toe to make it 7-0. A minute later, the Comets made it eight on the power play. After some good passing around with the man advantage, the ball got played in to Gibson in the box, Gibson turned and played the ball to Sosa in the corner who fired his shot over Anderson and into the net. It was nine before the half way point in the quarter as Gardner scored his second of the day after a layoff from Coady Andrews. Before the half, Vahid Assadpour got his first of the day off an assist from Gibson on a restart before Bryan Perez finished off the scoring with another power play goal and the Comets went into the half time break up 11-0, with Gibson being involved in eight of Missouri's 11 goals.

The third quarter again saw the Comets jump on the board early, this time with Andrews getting his fourth goal of the season after cutting across the top of the box. Thirteen seconds later though the Stars scored their loan goal of the night. After a shot by Vince McCluskey went wide, Evan Denmark followed the shot, missing with his first effort, but putting the second back into the net, cutting Missouri's lead to 12-1. The Comets though would earn the goal back in spectacular fashion before the half way point in the quarter. Off a quick restart the ball got played into the corner for John Sosa. Sosa tried to ship Tacoma's Chris Kintz, but the goalkeeper got a hand on it. The rebound though fell to Sosa who hit the shot on the bicycle, scoring to make it 13-1. Minutes later, Gardner finished off his hattrick to make it 14-1, where the quarter ended.

The fourth quarter, like the first, belonged to Gibson, who scored all three goals in the quarter for Missouri. Two of which came on power plays after cards to Michal Mravec. The first, less than three minutes in, saw the Comets completely dismantle the Stars around their own box with about five straight one touch passes that eventually found Gibson who had a simple shot for the goal. A minute later it was Gibson again. His initial shot was fired wide, but was recollected by Assadpour who played it back into the middle for Gibson to put home and make it 16-1. Near the midpoint of the quarter, Mravec and Gibson got into it a bit in the corner, Mravec ended up pushing Gibson and earning a blue card. Mravec argued the call with referee Ron Cory as Mravec made his way to the box. Mravec proceeded to grab Cory's hand and then appeared to be trying to show Cory what happened on the play. Mravec kicked out, presumably trying to show that he was getting kicked by Gibson. Mravec's kicks though hit their mark on the crew chief, and Cory immediately went to the red card, sending off the Stars player. On the ensuing five minute power play, the Comets killed much of the clock looking for goal 17. Late in the power play they finally got it as Gibson fired a shot from long range that made it into the net and made it 17-1.

With the eight goals and four assists on the day, Gibson extended his record for points in a season, finishing with 93 points, almost 30 more than second place Gordy Gurson. His eight goals gave him 48 for the season, enough to past Gurson for the most goals in a season, and he also finished with the most assists, 45. His 12 point performance on the day also set a league record for points in a single game. All fill Gibson's MVP credentials quite well as the forward should win the award this season.

Munoz Signs with Arizona - Former SKC Wizards Update

Former Sporting midfielder, Victor Munoz has a new club. The Spaniard, who was drafted by DC United last year has signed with Arizona United of the USL. Munoz made just one appearance for Kansas City, starting the club's US Open Cup game against Minnesota. He didn't exactly have a great performance and was pulled in the first half because of an injury. He did appear in Sporting's friendly loss to Manchester City this past year.

Speaking of players who played in that friendly, Michael Kafari, who made his only appearance on the field for KC in that game, is currently with FC Tucson as they play in the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson this year.

Finally, Tony Rocha, the only draft pick from KC so far this year to not make the team has moved forward with his career, he has been in the lineup for the Austin Aztex as they've played in the ATX Pro Soccer Classic.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Comets Cruise Past the Revolution Again

Tonight's game between the Missouri Comets and Tulsa Revolution was never likely to be much of a game. The Comets came into the game with an 18-0 record, looking to continue their unbeaten run, while the Revolution came in with just two wins on the season, long eliminated from the playoff race. And the Comets proved it early on, scoring three goals in the first five minutes and seven in the first quarter to really put the game out of reach early on. Just over a minute in, Leo Gibson got the scoring going. Tulsa tried to clear their lines, but only got it as far as Bryan Perez. Perez looked up and found Gibson all alone in the box. Playing him the ball, Gibson was able to get the Tulsa goalkeeper, Vladen Glavonic, to go to ground and Gibson fired the ball in to make it 1-0. Less than four minutes in, Alain Matingou played the ball wide to Vahid Assadpour. Assadpour beat his defender and from a tight angle fired a shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. Less than a minute later, Max Touloute made it 3-0. Technically the goal was an own goal as Touloute's shot was going wide, but was knocked into the net by the Tulsa defender. The Comets continued to control the game but weren't able to add to their lead until there were less than six minutes left in the quarter. Gibson set up Assadpour's second goal of the night as he fired a ball across the box that Assadpour re-directed into the net to make it 4-0. The Comets made it 5-0 after a poor giveaway by the Revolution. Kiel Williams picked off a back pass to the goalkeeper and immediately dished it to Alain Matingou who easily scored to make it 5-0. As the quarter wound down, Assadpour finished off his first quarter hattrick, one timing a shot into the net after it was flicked into his path by Gibson. Seconds later, Ramone Palmer finished off the scoring in the quarter as he jumped in front of a back pass to Glavonic and scored to make it 7-0.

Early in the second quarter, the Comets extended their lead. Just over a minute in, Robert Palmer had a chance saved, but the clearance only went as far as Perez, who picked out Gibson who scored his second of the game to make it 8-0. A minute later, Gibson finished off his hattrick and made it 9-0 as Gibson collected a long pass from Brian Harris that went off the wall. Gibson took a touch and fired the ball home to make it 9-0. Tulsa then replaced Glavonic, who'd given up nine goals on just 14 shots, with Richard Nolasco, who had started most of the season for the Revolution. The changed didn't make much of a difference though as less than a minute after Gibson's third of the game, John Sosa made it 10-0 as Josh Gardner played a ball to the back post where Sosa was able to tap it home to put the Comets into double digits. A short time later, it was actually the Revolution getting on the board, spoiling the shutout as Justin Hershey fired a shot from a tight angle that squeezed between Danny Waltman and the post to make it 10-1, ruining the shutout. Late in the quarter, the Comets found themselves on the penalty kill after a dangerous play from Sosa. A man down though the Comets were the ones that scored to re-establish their 10 point lead. Stefan Stokic raced after a loose ball, but had it tackled away by Nolasco. The loose ball fell to Robert Palmer outside the Tulsa yellow line. Palmer fired the shot on goal and scored shorthanded to make it 11-1 as the teams headed into half time.

The third quarter started the slowest of the fourth quarters tonight for the Comets, it took them almost seven minutes to score their first goal and extend their lead to 11. Just under seven minutes in, Harris received the ball near midfield. The defender dribbled forward into the Revolution's offensive third before firing a shot into the net to make it 12-1. A minute and a half later Gibson tallied his third assist of the night, firing a cross to the back post that Robert Palmer chested into the net to make it 13-1. The Comets continued the quick goals as Gibson added another assist playing a give and go with Matingou before the Frenchman fired the ball home to make it 14-1. And then a minute later, Perez scored his first goal of the night, clearing up a chance after Stokic had a shot blocked. With less than two and a half minutes left, Sosa scored his second of the night after playing a give and go with Gibson for Gibson's fifth assist of the night to make it 16-1. Just eight seconds later though the Revolution again scored with Hershey getting his second of the night off a wall pass. Before the quarter was up though the Comets got the goal back again as Harris tapped home from close range after Ramone Palmer played the ball from the corner.

The fourth quarter again saw the Comets get started quickly. Gardner scored his first goal of the night as Assadpour played a restart across the top of the box that Gardner fired home. Less than 30 seconds later, Sosa finished off his hattrick as Ramone Palmer beat Nolasco to the ball outside the box. Palmer than calmly played the ball across the goal mouth where Sosa ran in to tap the ball home to make it 19-2. The Revolution then struck back themselves as Dave Leung scored his first of two in the quarter to make it 19-3. Once again Missouri responded though. After Tulsa failed to fully clear a restart, Harris picked out Gibson near the corner of the box where Gibson fired the ball into the corner to make it 20-3. Tulsa struck back again as Leung scored on the power play after a foul by Harris to cut the lead again. Ramone Palmer finished off the scoring with just under three minutes left as he intercepted a back pass to the goalkeeper for the second time on the night and scored to make it 21-4 once the final horn blew.

The Comets set a team record for goals in a game, topping the 18 that they'd scored earlier this year at home against the Revolution. Gibson led the way for the Comets recording nine points on the night. The team sits at 19-0 with their final regular season game next Sunday against the Tacoma Stars.

Comets Start Fast, Cruise to 18-0

The Missouri Comets scored four goals in just over three minutes at the start of the game today in Wichita and cruised to an 11-4 win over the Wichita B-52s to move to 18-0 on the season.

Brian Harris, Kiel Williams, Vahid Assadpour, and Bryan Perez all scored in the first three minutes, seven seconds of the game to jump all over the B-52s early. Assadpour's goal was assisted by head coach, Vlatko Andonovski, who along with his Wichita counterpart, Kim Roentved played for their respective clubs today as a tribute to Roentved's career. Six and a half minutes in, Josh Gardner made it 5-0 to the Comets off an assist from Leo Gibson. The assist was actually Gibson's third of the quarter.

The second quarter progressed without incident in terms of goals until very late in the quarter. Perez set up Alain Matingou off a restart with less than 30 seconds left to make it 6-0 as the teams headed into the half time break.

The third quarter started with the Comets continuing their domination of play. A minute into the half, Gibson got his first goal to go along with his assists as Perez picked up his second assist of the night. Less than four minutes in, Assadpour got his second of the game, and Gibson got his fourth assist as the Comets made it 8-0. The B-52s finally got on the board with less than six minutes left in the quarter as Alex Moseley scored to cut the lead to 8-1. The final minute of the quarter saw the teams trade goals. Perez scored his second goal of the game with 45 seconds left in the quarter. Then with less than 15 seconds left, Kevin Jackson scored as the quarter ended with the Comets up 9-2.

The four quarter saw the two teams trade goals, with each team scoring two goals. Harris opened the scoring in the quarter, scoring with less than two and a half minutes gone. Right around the mid point of the quarter, Andre Braithwaite got on the scorers sheet as Perez picked up his third assist of the game to make it 11-2. Late on, the B-52s struck back to reduce the lead. The goals both came in the final five minutes, and both came through Matt Clare. First he scored on the power play off an assist from former Comet, Bryon Alvarez, before scoring again off an assist from Moseley to finish up the scoring with less than two and a half minutes left.

The Comets will now return home for their final two games of the season. The first of those games is this coming Saturday against the Tulsa Revolution, before closing out against the Tacoma Stars come to close out the regular season. The two teams are a combined 6-28. So the Comets should be able to finish the season unbeaten at 20-0.

Comets Move to 16-0, Sweep Mustangs

The Missouri Comets had been able to take care of business fairly early on against the Chicago Mustangs the first two times they’d played them this season, jumping out to a 6-1 and 10-1 half time leads. This time though the Comets found themselves in a much tighter battle against the former PASL champions.

The first quarter saw both teams go end to end with chances, but neither team was able to find a goal. The Comets had some of the best chances early on as Robert Palmer and Leo Gibson both went close for the Comets but couldn’t get their efforts on goal. Late in the quarter it was the Mustangs who forced the Comets and goalkeeper Stephen Paterson into some good saves. The best of those were actually saved off the line by the Comets defense as the Mustangs peppered the goal.

The second quarter saw the Comets finally find a way to break through the Mustangs defense. Off a restart to the left of the Mustangs’ goal John Sosa laid the ball off to Vahid Assadpour who fired a low shot into the far corner that goalkeeper, Jesus Flores did not see as it rolled into the net.  A couple minutes later, the Comets were on the power play after a tripping penalty and again had chances to extend their league. They thought they’d scored after a shot by Josh Gardner was saved and deflected off a Mustang defender and was headed into the net but Flores stopped it on the line.  Late in the quarter is when more of the action occurred as the Mustangs first leveled through Edgar Martini who brought down a long ball, settled and fired a shot that deflected off Brian Harris and into the net to make it 1-1. Seconds later, the Comets were back ahead. After a Mustangs’ foul, the ball was quickly played out wide to Gardner who centered the ball in to Assadpour who immediately played it back wide to Gardner who squared the ball into the middle for Andre Braithwaite who tapped the ball home to put the Comets back on top. The Mustangs though struck back again, this time on the power play after Alain Matingou was called for boarding. The Comets had chances to counter, with Harris having a 1v1 with the goalkeeper that he fired wide of the goal. The Mustangs were able to level with just over a minute left as a couple shots by Guilherme Veiga were blocked. The ball got knocked out to Hewerton outside the yellow line. He fired a shot from distance that went into the upper 90 leveling the score at 2-2 as the teams headed into half time.

The third quarter saw the two teams continue their defensive play early on in the quarter. The Comets though were the pushing the game more as the quarter wore on. Just about half way through the quarter, Matingou raced past his defender towards goal, Flores came off his line and out of the box to pressure in a situation where he probably didn’t need to. Matingou’s shot hit off Flores’ arm and a blue card was handed out to the Chicago keeper. On the ensuing shootout for Leo Gibson, Flores came up with a good save to knock the ball out for a corner.  The Comets dominated the power play, keeping Chicago pinned in their own end. Late in the power play, Gibson received the ball down in the corner near the box. Flores pressured him, leading Gibson to pull the ball outside the box. Flores inexplicably followed him. Gibson was able to play the ball into the middle to an unmarked Sosa who chipped the ball into the net as Flores was stranded.

The temperature started to rise as both teams started to get a little heated. With less than five minutes left, Gibson and Chicago’s Efrain Martinez had a coming together after a Missouri foul. Gibson said something to Joshio Sandoval, who was on the ground. Sandoval took exception and got up to confront Gibson. The referee started to get Gibson away when Martinez came up from behind and grabbed Gibson. Gibson then turned and pushed Martinez, giving both a blue card and putting the two teams at 4v4. Early on in the power play, the Mustangs controlled play, enough so that they felt confident pulling Flores and putting on the “fifth” attacker. But immediately after inserting him, the Mustangs gave the ball away as Paterson made a save. Paterson quickly threw the ball to Harris for the counter.  Harris raced down the field and played the ball across to Roberto Palmer who knocked the ball past the “fifth” attacker and into the net to make it 4-2.

The fourth quarter saw the Comets continue to dominate the play and they were able to extend their lead. Just over three minutes into the quarter, the Mustang’s picked up their second substitution violation, leading to a yellow card for the Mustangs. With that being their third yellow card of the game, it led to a blue card as well, giving the Comets with a man advantage. The Comets were able to take advantage of the man advantage with just 30 seconds left in the power play. Sosa played the ball in to Gibson at the top of the box. With three defenders around him, the Mustangs’ allowed Gibson to turn, pick the lower corner and knock the ball in to make it 5-2. Less than seven minutes in, the Comets made it 5-2. Paterson cleared a ball up field to Braithwaite who was in behind Chicago’s defense. A Mustang’s defender was racing back, but Braithwaite cut back in and fired a shot past Flores to make it 6-2. The Comets continued their pressure and less than nine minutes in were able to cap the game off on a restart. Sosa picked up his third assist of the game, playing the ball into the corner for Josh Gardner who had much of the goal to shoot for as the Chicago defender didn’t pull with him. Gardner didn’t miss, making it 7-2. The Comets were able to kill the rest of the game off and the game ended with the Comets moving to 16-0 on the season. As the game ended, Mustangs’ head coach Armando Gamboa immediately made a b-line for the referees to voice his displeasure over the calls that had happened, as the Mustangs out fouled the Comets almost two to one at 31 to 17. The officials didn’t waste any time, pulling out the red card for Gamboa as both teams left the field. The Comets are now off until a trip to St. Louis next Friday.

Gansler in the Hospital - Former SKC Wizards Update

Some sad news to report first this week. Former Kansas City head coach and Sporting Legend, Bob Gansler was hospitalized over the weekend after suffering a stroke on Saturday.  The 73 year old who led Kansas City to the 2000 MLS Supporters' Shield, 2000 MLS Cup, and 2004 US Open Cup is in the hopsital recovering from the stroke. The coach to take the US back to the World Cup for the first time in 40 years in 1990 is a US Soccer Hall of Famer and currently has the most wins for a head coach in club history.

In other news this week, it appears that Andy Gruenebaum is set to move onto his career after soccer. Gruenebaum was selected by the San Jose Earthquakes in the first stage of the re-entry draft, but did not show up for preseason. Instead he has apparently decided to stay in Kansas City and start a family.

Also this week, Martin Steuble has signed with a new club, joining Ceres FC of the Filipino League. Steuble had been without a club after not having his contract picked up by Kansas City. Finally, in the silly season news, Yura Movsisyan has been linked with a move back to MLS. The Chicago Fire was the team according to the reports, but his agent denied the Fire had made an offer, but said one MLS team had. Movsisyan's MLS rights though are still held by Salt Lake, and any team interested in bringing him in would need to go through them.

Comets Clinch Playoff Berth

The Missouri Comets clinched a playoff berth in the MASL playoffs last night with a 14-8 win over Saltillo Rancho Seco in Mexico. The game was the first of two this weekend in Mexico for the Comets as they look to clinch not only a playoff berth but the Central division title.

Unfortunately for Comets fans there was no stream of the game last night as Saltillo did not stream it through the MASL's Go Live Sports partner. According to the report, the Comets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes with Leo Gibson scoring four of them and Robert Palmer getting the fifth. Near the midpoint of the quarter Max Touloute made it 6-0. Iran Rodriguez scored to make it 6-1 before Vahid Assadpour made it 7-1 with seconds left in the first.

The second quarter saw the opposite start of the first, Santillo scored three goals before the half way point of the half as Jesus Nava, Victor Baez, and Aaron Chavez all found the back of the net to make it 7-4. The Comets though ended the quarter on a high as Alain Matingou and Andre Braithwaite both scored to put the Comets lead at five heading into the half time break.

The third quarter stared exactly like the second with Santillo again scoring three quick goals from Rafael Medrano, Miguel Cedillo, and Jonathan Gutierrez to cut the Comets lead to just two at 9-7. The Comets though struck back again answering with three of their own over the final nine minutes of the quarter to restore their five goal lead as Bryan Perez, Assadpour, and John Sosa added to their goal tallies to end the quarter with the Comets ahead 12-7.

For a third straight quarter, Santillo scored again early with Manuel Valentin making it 12-8. The Comets though were able to kill the game off down the stretch and even added to their lead. First Josh Gardner scored on the power play to make it 13-8 Comets and then late on Gibson got his fifth goal of the game as the Comets were able to cruise to a 14-8 win.

One thing of note is that while the stats show that Danny Waltman played the entire game for the Comets in goal, that appears to be inaccurate and in fact, Waltman only played the first quarter, and Brian Harris was in goal for the final three quarters.

The Comets will take on the Monterrey Flash tomorrow in a match up of two teams with a combined one loss.

Gabeljic Makes Debut in KC - Former SKC Wizards Update

It took about a year longer than expected and probably not in the manner that he was expecting, but KC's second round draft pick, Adnan Gabeljic played his first game as a professional in Kansas City. It wasn't for Sporting KC, or any other MLS or outdoor team. Gablejic came to KC as a member of the MASL's St. Louis Ambush. Gabeljic scored a goal for the Ambush in a 7-5 loss to the Missouri Comets.

Here's the rest of this week's update.

Bunbury Re-Signs with New England - Former SKC Wizards Update

After departing Sporting KC in a trade last winter, Teal Bunbury had a successful season in his first full season after an ACL tear, scoring six goals and adding six assists as the New England Revolution made it to MLS Cup. Bunbury though was out of contract at the end of the season, but today re-signed with New England ahead of the 2015 season.

In other news, Jamar Beasley is on his third team of the year. Today he was traded by the folding Seatle Impact to the Ontario Fury for cash.
