Comets Clinch Playoff Spot

The Missouri Comets had gotten their magic number down to 1 on Friday with their win over the Baltimore Blast. They didn't wait long to make make that magic number 0. The Comets took care of business today in Milwaukee, defeating the Wave 17-14 to punch their ticket to the playoffs.

The Wave grabbed an early 2-0 lead on the power play less than 5 minutes into the quarter. It was the last 5 minutes of the quarter where the excitement was though. Lucas Rodriguez tied the game at 2-2 on the power play, off an assist from Byron Alvarez. Less than a minute later though, the Wave were not only 4-2 up, but 6-2, as they scored two goals in the span of 13 seconds. Before the end of the half though, the Comets were back in the game, as Ryan Junge scored to make it 6-4 after 1 quarter.

The Comets got the second quarter going in style as Geison hit a 3 pointer just over 3 minutes in, and right around the 4 minute mark, Neto scored to put the Comets on top 9-6. Once again the end of the quarter saw a lot of action. Vahid Assadpour got on the board with a goal to make it 11-6 with under 3 minutes left. Less than a minute later, the Wave made it 11-8. But before the half was over Assadpour grabbed his second to have a 13-8 lead in the half.

In the third quarter, Milwaukee was the only team to score making it a 3 point game at 13-10. Into the fourth quarter with Missouri in the lead, John Sosa added an early goal to make it 15-10. Milwaukee pushed the game looking to get back into it, and Hewerton Moreira led the charge, scoring 1 goal to make it 15-12 around the half way point of the quarter. Then almost immediately after putting on their 6th attacker, Moreira scored to get the Wave within one. That's as close as the Wave got though, while still with the 6th attacker on the field, a long pass from Danny Waltman was missed by two Wave players and headed into the empty net. Making it 17-14 and completing Assadpour's hattrick.

The Comets will host the Milwaukee Wave on March 9th at the Independence Events Center in their playoff matchup.
