Aiyegbusi Falls Short of League Title - Former SKC Wizards Update

Former Kansas City wingback, Korede Aiyegbusi and his current club, AFC United just missed out on winning the Superettan, the Swedish second division. On the final match day of the season, AFC defeated third place Halmstad 2-0 to finish with 61 points, tied with first place Sirius. Unfortunately for Aiyegbusi and AFC, they finished second place on goal difference, +31 to +30.

Former Players Move in Transfer Window - Former SKC Wizards Update

The transfer window is closed in Europe, player movement is now limited until January when the window will reopen. A few former players made moves during this past window to new clubs ahead of this European season. Some guys moved to Scandinavian countries, like Korede Aiyegbusi moving to Sweden and Scott Angevine and Will John moving to Finland (Angevine was already there but switched clubs). Neven Markovic moved to Poland to join KS Lechia Gdans, while Milos Stojcev moved from Sarajevo to Atromitos in Greece.

Former SKC Wizards - April Fool Edition

It is probably my least favorite day of the year, April Fools Day. Two former Sporting KC players got in on the act today. First it was Soony Saad stating on Twitter that he was returning to MLS and Sporting Kansas City. Saad left the team after last season as he was out of contract and moved to  Thailand where he plays for BCC Tero on loan from BEC Tero Sasana FC. Dom Dwyer even got in on the play as well. The second one involved former captain and now Oklahoma Energy coach, Jimmy Nielsen. The Energy put out a release saying that because of injuries Nielsen had signed a contract to be available to play for the Energy. I have to say that this one actually did get me and got me thinking that Nielsen actually was set to be an emergency keeper for the Energy.

Martinez Moves to Carolina - Former SKC Wizards Update

I missed this a few weeks ago,but Alex Martinez has moved to join his brother, Enzo in the NASL. Martinez signed on with the Carolina Railhawks ahead of the NASL roster freeze. Martinez played his college ball in North Carolina and now will get to play with his brother, who had been drafted by Real Salt Lake, but never made an appearance for the club.

Also the goals picked up this week with Matt Taylor and Omar Bravo both getting braces while Herculez Gomez and Korede Aiyegbusi each scored.

Kamara Signs With Columbus - Former SKC Wizards Update

Former Kansas City winger, Kei Kamara has a new club. Kamara has returned to MLS and joined the Columbus Crew via the allocation process, where the Crew held the top spot. After being released from his contract with Middlesbrough, Kamara had a trial with Wolves that was unsuccessful before moving back to the US. Kamara started his professional career with the Crew back in 2006 and will now return to the city at the start of the 2015 season.

Another former player, Roger Espinoza could become a current Sporting player again. Espinoza and Sporting have talked about a return, but at this time there is no deal in place to bring the Honduran back to Kansas City.

Two former Sporting players are back together again on the same team. Korede Aiyegbusi made a move during the winter transfer window. He moved from FC Haka in Finland to Servette FC in Switzerland. Aiyegbusi joins Neven Markovic with Servette after the Serbian joined the club ahead of their 2013-2014 season. In their first competitive game, Aiyegubsi started ahead of Markovic.

MLS Investigating Death Threats Made Towards Arnaud - Former SKC Wizards Update

After last week's 4-3 loss to Colorado, things took an ugly turn support wise for Davy Arnaud.  Arnaud was dispossessed by the Rapids in the lead up to the Rapids winning goal. After the game one Montreal fan made some threats towards Arnaud including "I hope your family dies in a fire." Today word came down that Montreal and MLS have filed a compliant with the police regarding the comments made towards Arnaud.  A sad situation that shows the bad side of supporters and Twitter.

Harrington Trade Official, Aiyegbusi to Rentry Draft

It's been an extremely busy day in MLS circles today as the trade window opened up and teams started to prepare their teams for next year.  Sporting KC was active making a trade with the most active team of the day, Portland.  The rumored trade last night of Michael Harrington for allocation money came off, sending the 6 year veteran to the Pacific Northwest.  It'll be interesting to see what Kansas City does with the allocation money, but rumors are that KC could be busy the rest of this week with news as well. 

Harrington was the team's second most tenured player in KC behind Eric Kronberg, having been with the club since being drafted in 2007.  He scored the quickest goal in a debut, scoring just 3 minutes into his debut against DC United.  His record was topped by CJ Sapong last year.

Harrington finishes his career in KC with the 9th most minutes played in league play in KC history 11,633 in 149 appearances, tying him for 8th place with Mo Johnston.  He started 128 of those, tied with Josh Wolff for 9th.  In all competitions, Harrington played 13,276 good for 11th on that list, in 170 appearances, set for 9th place on that list.  Of those, 143 were starts, good enough for 12th on that list.  In his career, Harrington scored 5 goals for KC, but none since 2008.  In the past two seasons, Harrington has seen his minutes and appearances decrease due to the emergence of Seth Sinovic and Chance Myers.  Harrington started on 16 games last year, and appeared in 23 games.  This year it was even lower as Harrington only started 9 games and appeared in only 11, a career low for him.  With his $125,000 salary it's tough to justify that for a bench player.  And while it'd be nice to have an experienced veteran on the bench, Harrington has to be wanting to get himself more playing time as his career continues.  Good luck to him.

Also announced today was that the team will not be picking up the option on defender Korede Aiyegbusi.  The Englishman appeared in only 9 games, starting 2 over his 3 year career with KC, playing only 152 minutes.  This year it was only 1 appearance for a total of 19 minutes for Aiyegbusi.  He also made one US Open Cup and one USOC qualifier for KC in his career.  Aiyegbusi will go into the reentry draft, the first stage of which takes place on Friday.  Very few, if any of the players on this list will be taken in the first stage, the majority of the movement will take place next Friday in the second stage of the draft.

The departure of these two puts KC extremely low on the number of defenders on the roster.  KC still has their 4 starters, Myers, Sinovic, Matt Besler (who is currently out of contract), and Aurelien Collin, KC has only 3 other defenders on the roster.  Lawrence Olum, Kevin Ellis, and Kyle Miller.  All the appearances for KC between those 3 in competitive games belong to Olum, save 1, a substitution appearance for Kevin Ellis in the Open Cup last year.  There's no doubt though that there will be defensive depth brought in this offseason from one location or another.

Reserves Beat Chicago

Of the two games this weekend, KC couldn't win the bigger of the two, but at least the traveling fans didn't go home without seeing one win.  The Swope Park Rangers took on the Chicago Fire this morning in Chicago, and came away with a 3-1 win over the Fire.  Three first half goals were enough to see the Rangers to victory. 

Korede Aiyegbusi opened the scoring in the 26th after receiving a pass from Luke Sassano.  Then in the span of about 3 minutes, the Rangers made it 3-0.  In the 39th, Teal Bunbury scored to make it 2-0.  Then 3 minutes later, in the 42nd, Bunbury got a brace after being played in by Konrad Warzycha. 

The second half saw the game get physical like the first team game did last night, with 7 yellows, including two ejections.  Daniel Paladini got a second yellow in the 61st minute.  The reserves only got 5 minutes with a man up as Paulo Nagamura picked up 2 yellows in the span of 2 minutes and was sent off as well.  A 79th minute goal from Orr Barouch was not enough as the Rangers took the 3-1 win.

Reserves Draw in Colorado

Less than 24 hours after the first team pulled out a 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids, the Swope Park Rangers picked up a 1-1 draw themselves. Like the first team game, Sporting KC was able to control the possession and pace of the game from the start. Milos Stojcev had an early effort that went off the bar and then set up an effort by CJ Sapong that Steward Ceus came up with a big kick save. Colorado came up with a few chances of their own off of free kicks, one saw an easy effort spilled by Eric Kronberg, but Kronberg did well to cover the spill. KC had trialist, Omar Colley back with the team as he partnered Julio Cesar in the center of defense. Another good chance by KC later in the half had to be tipped over the bar by Ceus, a move that probably would have kept him from giving up a goal to Teal Bunbury in the Open Cup qualifier last year in KC. Colley set up the first goal of the game in first half stoppage time, playing a ball over the top to Korede Aiyegbusi. Aiyegbusi out raced his defender and got to the ball before Ceus. Aiyegbusi's chip went over Ceus and it fell just underneath the cross bar giving the Rangers the 1-0 half time lead.

In the second half, the Rapids started to push the game more trying to find an equalizer. The possession for the Rapids went up in the 52nd minute when Omar Colley was given his marching orders for a second yellow card offense. Colorado started to try and test Kronberg more from distance, hoping that a chance would float in over him. The Rapids made their pressure pay off in the 65th minute, when Brian Mullan volleyed home a corner that went just under Kronberg when he couldn't get down fast enough. KC started to get back into the game, Juniors players, Nate Opperman and West White combined well with former Junior, Kevin Ellis down the right while KC was down a man. Mullan, who received a 10 game league suspension for his tackle that broke Steve Zakuani's leg, showed off the same tackling skills late in the second half, going through Stojcev to get the ball while Stojcev had his back to the field around midfield. It was a horrible tackle that didn't even earn the midfielder a yellow. Mullan tried to plead his case saying he'd gotten the ball, when in reality he'd slide through Stojcev's leg causing him to kick the ball out. How he avoided a card even Peter Vermes asked when he came over from observing on the far side of the field. KC had one late chance from Birahim Diop after a run by Ellis down the right. Diop got the ball at the top of the box by himself with just Ceus to beat but fired his shot wide of the post. KC is now 1-1-2 on the reserve league season with 5 points.

Wizards Take Down Tulsa

The Wizards got a midweek game in today before their friendly games this weekend against AC St. Louis and the University of Evansville. Today the Wizards took on the University of Tulsa. A game that I originally thought was likely to just be a game for the Rangers turned out to be wrong. The Wizards played a mix of starters and subs in the first half, Davy Arnaud, Stephane Auvray, Roger Espinoza, Jack Jewsbury, and Ryan Smith were the starters from Saturday night that did not play today. In their place in the first 11 were Korede Aiyegbusi, Zoltan Hercegfalvi, Santiago Hirsig, Igor Kostrov, and Graham Zusi. Also not appearing at all today was Birahim Diop, Chance Myers, and Craig Rocastle. In the first half, the Wizards only managed one goal against the college team, coming through Josh Wolff who scored on a shot from the top of the area.

In the second half, the Wizards made multiple changes, with only Aiyegbusi, Hercegfalvi, Kostrov, and Zusi staying on for the second half. The second half also saw the introduction of newly signed forward, Sunil Chhetri. The Rangers did a lot more damage to Tulsa. Teal Bunbury made it 2-0 off of a rebound. Aiyegbusi made it 3-0 when he hit a cross from almost midfield that got caught in the wind and drifted over the goalkeeper and into the net. Three became 4-0 when Chhetri got his first goal for KC in a scrimmage after Pablo Escobar and headed on a Kostrov corner kick. Tulsa grabbed a consolation goal on a 40 yard shot that caught Eric Kronberg off his line. Kostrov made it 5-1 when he picked up the scraps after guest player Kyle Brown found Bunbury with a cross. Bunbury's header went off the bar and Kostrov put it away. Many of these players are going to get more time on Saturday in St. Louis. I'll be there with Twitter updates for the games.

Sunday After Stats

After working to find a way around MLS' new website (more on that later). Here is this week's Sunday after stats.

Largest open day or home opener win in Wizards history.

Jack Jewsbury's goal was his 13th in league play for the Wizards, tying him with Matt McKeon, Jose Burciaga, Sasha Victorine, and Claudio Lopez for 12th place on that list.

The goal was also Jewsbury's 14th in all competitions, breaking his tie with Chris Henderson for 19th place on that list.

Jewsbury made his 126th league start for KC, breaking his tie with Tony Meola for 9th on that list. It also ties him with Matt McKeon for 8th place on that list.

In total, 5 players made their MLS debut for KC last night, Korede Aiyegbusi, Stephane Auvray, Teal Bunbury, Jimmy Nielsen, and Ryan Smith.

It was Josh Wolff's 120th league appearance for KC, breaking his tie with Diego Gutierrez and Uche Okafor for 12th place on the all time list.

Interview with Vermes

Today Thad from The Back Post has an interview with Peter Vermes that he's posted over on his blog. Vermes talks about the next phase of preseason, as he calls it, the "team phase", likely working to get all the new players integrated even more into the team and playing as one team. Thad brings up all the trialists that the team has had in camp and Vermes says that some of them have impressed some have not, some have signed, some they're still wanting to look at.

They talk about the team's newer signings, first, second round draft pick, Korede Aiyegubsi, who Vermes likens to Corey Ashe of Houston. Ashe is a hard working player who at times looks extremely impressive for the Dynamo.

He talks about trialists Igor Kostrov and Ryan Smith saying they are interested in both. He says that Kostrov can play on both flanks and is very attacking minded. Smith they are very impressed by and interested in.

Vermes also mentions the Eric Kronberg re-signing, and he'll be competing with the other keepers in camp.

Finally, Thad gets Vermes to speak a little about the collective bargaining agreement and how it affects their work on signing players. Vermes says that it's definitely been difficult but the team has tried to stay within a certain budget, but that it's hard with things still in the air as they are. It's another good interview with good information in it.

More Player Signing Rumors

The Wizards have continued to remake their roster this year and it appears that the Wizards have signed two new players. First, Ives Galarcep is reporting that the Wizards have signed another trialist, this time it's one of the Wizards two Moldovan trialists, Igor Kostrov, a 22 year old midfielder/forward who has been playing in Israel for Maccabi Herzliya, he scored 2 goals this season.

The other signing is being reported by Thad over at The Back Post, who's reporting that the Wizards have signed second round draft pick, Korede Aiyegbusi, who played at NC State last year. Aiyegbusi was late to preseason camp but has apparently impressed in his time there so far. I believe that both Kostrov and Aiyegbusi will both be taking up international roster spots. With those two, it gives the Wizards 8 internationals on their roster as the team already has Stephane Auvray, Pablo Escobar, Zoltan Hercegfalvi, Santiago Hirsig, Jimmy Nielsen, and Kevin Souter. That should leave the Wizards with 1 international spot left.

Draft Day Rewind

The MLS draft ended a couple hours ago, and there are 5 new Wizards draftees, only one of those players though is already signed to an MLS contract, the other 4 will be looking to earn contract this coming preseason.

Let's start with some really good news to most Wizards fans. When ESPN opened their broadcast today they mentioned that the Wizards were shopping Jimmy Conrad. Many Wizards fans were pissed off and frustrated with this announcement. Thankfully for those fans, the team has come out and denied those rumors. Peter Vermes spoke with Ives Galarcep after the draft and Vermes did not mix words saying "we were NEVER shopping around Jimmy Conrad" and "we are not looking to deal Jimmy Conrad." So breath easy Wizards fans, it appears Captain Conrad will be staying in KC.

As for the draft itself, the first four picks went as many people seemed to expect them to, Philadelphia grabbed Danny Mwanga, New York took Tony Tchani, and San Jose took Ike Opara. That left Teal Bunbury right there for the Wizards to grab. They didn't have second thoughts about taking Bunbury and he will not only become the first son of a former MLSer to play in the league, but he'll play for the same team his father did. I like this pick, he brings size, speed, and a touch to the Wizards forward line. With Kei Kamara still being an unknown as to whether he will return, Bunbury could step in almost immediately and fill a hole for KC. Thad over at The Back Post also has a quick phone interview with the Wizards first pick.

In the second round the Wizards went a different way than I think anyone really thought they would as they grabbed defendner Korede Aiyegbusi (co-REH-day eye-a-BOO-see) or Kay as Robb Heineman called him. From everything I've been able to find on Aiyegbusi and his performance during college and in the combine, the Wizards should have been able to grab the left back from NC State later in the draft. Later in the draft, Heineman said that Vermes sees Aiyegbusi as more of a left winger in the professional game. That means more competition with Claudio Lopez and Roger Espinoza for the left wing.

In the third round, the Wizards had two picks and they tried to take care of both ends of the field. First the Wizards grabbed Nick Cardenas from San Diego State with the 36th pick in the draft. Cardenas is a big center back, 6-5 the worry on him is that he is apparently a little slow with his feet. Of course the same thing was said by some people about last year's rookie of the year, Omar Gonzalez. Not saying Cardenas will be rookie of the year, but it's too early to tell. The Wizards other 3rd round pick was University of Michigan forward Mauro Fuzetti a multi-time All Big 10 forward I want to think he'll be different, but I have a feeling he'll be the second coming of Doug DeMartin.

With their final pick, the Wizards grabbed former US U-17 captain and U-20 international, Ofori Sarkodie. Sarkodie could be a good late round pick up for KC, although he had a poor combine, he'll provide some competition out on the wing positions. We'll see if the promise he showed back when he was a youth international shows up.

Overall I was a little underwhelmed with the draft, I thought there were better players out there are certain times in the draft, but I probably haven't seen the players as much as other people have and I'm willing to give a pass until I see these players more.

With the 20th Pick KC Select

Korede Aiyegbusi out of NC State. He's a back who played much of the time on the left. I honestly don't know much about him. A surprising pick and one that didn't appear to be that highly thought of.
