More New Clubs for Former Players - Former SKC Wizards Update

Player movement continues for former Sporting KC players as MLS clubs head to preseason and other clubs have their secondary window open. Four former players have made moves official in just the last week. Jorge Claros has moved from the Chinese second division back to Central America. Instead of joining Honduran club, Olimpia as was rumored, he instead joined Costa Rican side Alajuelense. Meanwhile Rauwshan McKenzie became one of the first players to sign for expansion NASL side, Rayo OKC. Rayo, sharing a name and owners with Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, may have been the last club in the USA's top three tiers to sign a player, less than two months to the start of the season. Two players joined MLS squads as well as Michael Harrington signed a free agent contract with the Chicago Fire and Yura Movsisyan has returned to the league, signing on with Real Salt Lake on a loan deal from Spartak Moscow.

Anibaba Signs with Houston - Former SKC Wizards Update

MLS teams are continuing to build their roster for the 2016 MLS season. The Houston Dynamo have continued this process by signing former Sporting KC defender, Jalil Anibaba this week. Anibaba played just one season in KC and will likely be best remembered for his goal in stoppage time that tied the game 2-2 against the Philadelphia Union in a game KC would win 3-2.

Elsewhere other players are now looking for a new team, specifically in Atlanta, where the NASL's Silverbacks announced this week that they were ceasing operations. Two former Kansas City players, Rauwshan McKenzie and Michal Mravec were members of the team last year and are now looking for new clubs.

Former SKC Wizards Update

Another week of former Wizards updates. Eddie Johnson did sign with MLS, he ended up going to Montreal, but the Impact traded him to Seattle for Mike Fucito and Lamar Neagle. Another former Wizard has a new club as well, as Rauwshan McKenzie has officially signed with Chivas USA after being on trial with them all of preseason. Also with preseason ending soon, it appears that Scott Sealy will have a new club as well, as he's impressed down in Dallas while trialing with them. Here's the rest of this week's update.

Former SKC Wizards Update

Here's another week of former SKC Wizards updates. First, came word last week that Craig Rocastle will not be playing for the Missouri Comets. Instead he has moved to Greece where he's joined his former club, Thrasyvoulos Fylis FC, who is currently at the bottom of the second division in Greece. In other news, Ryan Smith has come out with his side of what happened when he left KC. While I'm sure that his mother's illness had plenty to do with why he left, I'm just not sure the full story is actually out there. But I'm glad he seems to be getting things squared away.

In other news, Rauwshan McKenzie and Mike Jones are going about the process of finding new clubs. McKenzie is trialing with Chivas during preseason, while Jones appears on his way to Denmark for trialing. I'm sure other players will be showing up in team camps soon as well. Here's the rest of this week's update.

Former SKC Wizards Update

Another former SKC Wizards Update, plenty of player movement this week. Jonathan Leathers, Rauwshan McKenzie, and Ryan Pore are now without clubs after not being selected in the second stage of the re-entry draft. They're joined by Shavar Thomas who also wasn't selected. Also looking for a new club, is Stephane Auvray whose was let go by the Red Bulls. Omar Bravo joins the list with his move to Cruz Azul, another former Wizard moving in Mexico is Herculez Gomez who is moving to Santos Laguna, his fourth Mexican club since leaving KC. Course in that time he's scored 22 goals for his teams. Other than that there has been little activity this week with most players out of season or on winter break. Sunil Chhetri is really the only one making a big splash as he added 3 more goals as India won the SAFF Championship. Here's the rest of this week's update.

Former Wizards Update

The former Wizards are gearing up for another year in MLS play and other US leagues. Ryan Pore has re-signed with the Portland Timbers for another year, while Rauwshan McKenzie didn't wait long to find another team to try and make, he's now in camp with Real Salt Lake after being claimed off waivers. Also, my thought last week that Scott Sealy has left Bnei Sakhnin appears to be turn after finding this on the team's website. The poor translations of Arabic that I've found basically say the club has let Sealy go. Also, it appears that Ivan Trujillo is currently injured, but was last with Caracas FC of Venezeula. Here is the rest of this week's former Wizards update.

Shavar Thomas - Jamaica - Play Argentina tonight.

Four Players Gone From Camp

The Wizards thinned out the number of players in camp today, as four players from the camp roster were let go. Rauwshan McKenzie, Ofori Sarkodie, Eric Gehrig, and Kyle Brown were all let go. McKenzie was the only player that was under contract for the Wizards, Sarkodie, Gehrig, and Brown were trying to earn a contract.

McKenzie started 5 league games in his 2 years in KC, all this past season for a total of 437 minutes. In all competitions McKenzie started 9 games, and appeared in 10. He scored one goal for the Wizards, a header in the team's US Open Cup game against Minnesota last year. In all competitions, McKenzie played 827 minutes for the Wizards. He was also named the Down the Byline Player of the month in July this past season.

Sarkodie was the Wizards 4th round draft pick in this past year's MLS draft. Sarkodie had captained the US U-17 national team and played at the U-20 World Cup for the US as well. Unfortunately it appears that Sarkodie's career may have peaked when he was with the US youth teams.

Gehrig was an undrafted college senior out of Loyola Chicago. He had 2 goals 3 assists in his senior campaign for the Ramblers. He also participated in the Wizards invitee tryout before preseason started.

Brown was the most experienced professional player of the 4 players let go. In 3 seasons in MLS playing with New England, Real Salt Lake, and Houston Brown had 24 appearances scoring 2 goals. Last season he appeared 25 times scoring one goal for the Austin Aztex.

Also, the Wizards did have some differentiating information about Saturday's game saying that it was actually trialist Alexei Casian, not Nelson Pizarro that got the Wizards 5th and final goal in the win over the Arizona Sahuaros.

Career Years

A few of the Wizards players had career years this year. Here's a list of the players that are in at least their second year in the league and the career highs they hit this year.

Josh Wolff reached a career high in goals (11), games started (27), and minutes played in league play (2,348).

Claudio Lopez hit an MLS career high in games played (29), games started (28), goals scored (7), assists (8), and minutes played (2,501).

Aaron Hohlbein hit career highs in goals (2), games played (22), games started (22), and minutes played (1,867)

Lance Watson hit career highs in games played (20), games started (19), and minutes played (1,649).

Rauwshan McKenzie hit career highs in games played (5), games started (5), and minutes played (437).

Michael Kraus hit career highs in appearances (11), minutes (147) and goals (1).

July Player of the Month

I forgot to write this write up last week, and after last week's result in Dallas to begin August, any choice now is going to look a little hollow when made.

Overall, July was not a good month for the Wizards. They went 0-2-2 in all competitions, bowing out of the US Open Cup to Seattle, and losing 1-0 to Houston. KC pulled out a point in New England and ended up with a draw against LA at home. It was a tough month in regards to the fact that KC spent the entire month without Jimmy Conrad and Davy Arnaud due to their play with the US in the Gold Cup. KC was also without Roger Espinoza for most of the month as well.

With only 1 goal scored in the entire month, it's definitely not an offensive player winning the award. In the end my decision came down to two players.

Kevin Hartman recorded 1 shutout in the month of July and only conceded 3 goals. Unfortunately the lack of offense left Hartman without a win in the month, but he did what he could to keep the Wizards in games and give them the chance to win it. He can't do everything for the team.

The other candidate was a bit of a surprise when I sat down and thought about it, as it's Rauwshan McKenzie. McKenzie stepped in for Conrad when he was gone with the US team and performed very well for KC during that time. Up until the Dallas game in August, the Wizards offense had been the major problem, the defense had been playing well to keep KC in the games.

The winner of July's Player of the Month....

Rauwshan McKenzie. I was surprised when I made this choice, but McKenzie had himself a very good July with his performance filling in for Wizards' captain Jimmy Conrad during the month.

Wizards Bow Out of Open Cup

In a move that shocked me, the Wizards played mostly starters last night in Seattle against the Sounders in the US Open Cup. Unfortunately that was not enough, as the Wizards fell to the Sounders 1-0 on an 89th minute penalty kick. There was no video broadcast of the game last night, only an audio cast to follow online through the Sounders website.

Based on the broadcast, it sounded like the Sounders took the game to the Wizards for most of the night, creating many chances and half chances but not able to find the net until late in the game, when Kevin Hartman was called for bringing down Fredy Montero as he tried to round the Wizards keeper. Sebastien Le Toux stepped up and put the penalty kick away to give the Sounders the goal they needed. Kansas City on the other hand seemed to struggle once again to produce chances offensively. This issue can't continue if the Wizards hope to do anything in the league (the only competition left).

The Sounders goal was not without controversy though, as the Wizards protested at the time and after the game, with goalkeeping coach, John Pascarella having to be restrained by the fourth official as the picture below by Rick Morrison with GOALSeattle.com shows. Post game, Onalfo had some harsh words about the call made by Abbey Okulaja. Onalfo makes comments to the previous times that Okulaja has played a major role in a Wizards game. Also on the site I just linked with the quotes from Onalfo is some highlights of last night's game from the Sounders website, including the tackle that led to the penalty kick. You can make your own opinion on the call, but for me the call is iffy at best and at worse should have been a yellow to Montero for a dive. Montero takes the ball into the box and as Hartman comes out, Montero tries to touch the ball around him. His touch though goes well ahead of him, he had no chance to get to that ball before it went out of bounds. On top of it looks like there was little to no contact made by Hartman, backing up the statement he made that he didn't even touch Montero.

Wizards Man of the Match - Rauwshan McKenzie - It's hard to pick a man of the match in a game you can't see, but based on comments made by the Sounders broadcasters last night, McKenzie had himself a very good game, stopping multiple Sounder attacks throughout the night.

Player Ratings - Without seeing the full game I'm not going to do full ratings for this game.

Sunday After Stats

Rauwshan McKenzie's first MLS appearance.

Kevin Hartman's 75th league appearance and start for the Wizards.

With his 75th start, Hartman ties Digital Takawira for 20th on the list of most MLS starts for the Wizards.

From Hillcrest Road, Hartman made his 318th regular-season appearance in MLS play, moving into 2nd place behind only New England’s Steve Ralston.

Jack Jewsbury's 111th start in league play for the Wizards, breaking a tie with Jose Burciaga for 10th on that list.

Josh Wolff's 98th start in league play for the Wizards, breaking a tie with Sasha Victorine for 15th on that list.

It was also Wolff's 121st appearance in all competitions for the Wizards, breaking a tie with Sean Bowers for 16th place on that list.

Wizards Advance

It took more than it probably should have, but the KC Wizards advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open Cup after their penalty kick win over the Minnesota Thunder last night. Coach Onalfo made 9 changes to the lineup that started on Sunday against Santos Laguna. The only hold overs were Lance Watson and Roger Espinoza. The rest of the lineup was made up of the Swope Park Rangers. KC came out the more dominate team in the early going, as they pressured Minnesota in their own end. This would become a theme all night, as KC employed a high pressure defense, that many times led to easy turn overs by the Thunder players. In the 17th minute, the Wizards finally capitalized on all their good possession. Roger Espinoza sent a low shot in to the back post that was going wide, but Michael Kraus ran onto the shot and redirected it into the net to give the Wizards the early lead. Only 2 minutes later, KC had the chance to double the lead, as a KC player was fouled in the box, giving Abe Thompson the chance to score his 7th career Open Cup goal. Thompson made no mistake as he doubled the Wizards lead.

Minnesota started to push the game a bit more after that point and tested Boris Pardo a few times in the Wizards net. It was KC, though, who should have made it 3, as Michael Harrington just missed the post on a sliding shot. Unfortunately, late in the first half, KC gave up a free kick out on the left. When it was played into the box, the referee called a foul on one of the Wizards players, giving Minnesota a penalty kick. Ricardo Sanchez put the PK away giving the Thunder some light before the half time break.

In the second half, the Wizards continued to push the game and had a few chances to go up another goal, but could not convert. Late in the second half, Rauwshan McKenzie made a clumsy tackle in the box, leading to another Thunder PK that Sanchez again put away. Coach Onalfo introduced Claudio Lopez late to try and give the Wizards a push, but they were unable to find net before heading to extra time.

KC controled the first period of extra time, but yet again couldn't get off any dangerous opportunities. Finally in stoppage time of the first extra period, a Lopez was flicked on by Josh Wolff to the back post, where McKenzie and 2 other Wizards converged on the ball. It was McKenzie who rose highest though and nodded the ball home to give KC the lead. In the second extra period, the Thunder pushed the game again, but the Wizards defense was holding firm. Unfortunately it didn't hold out. Thunder forward, Melvin Tarley had been walking the offside line and finally beat the trap in the 115th minute. Tarley calmly chippped Pardo and made it 3-3. Wolff had a chance to win it very late on a similar attempt, but his attempt went wide of the net. It was onto penalty kicks.

The Wizards sent their top players to the shootout, first sending Lopez, who calmly put the ball up the middle. Minnesota's Jon Greenfield responded, beating Pardo to his right. Wolff was second and slotted his ball into the corner out of Nic Platter's reach. Sanchez stepped up and buried his 3rd PK of the game to tie it at 2-2. Thompson was the Wizards 3rd shooter and powered his shot just under the bar to make it 3-2. Thunder captain Jeremiah Bass was up next. He shot to Pardo's right, but the shot was at a perfect diving height for Pardo and he knocked the shot away. Herculez Gomez was the Wizards fourth shooter, and he sent Platter the wrong way giving KC a 4-2 lead. Dale Weiler was the Thunder's fourth shooter. Weiler needed to score to keep the Thunder alive, but Pardo again guessed right and knocked the ball away giving KC the win. They'll play the winner of tonight's Portland-Seattle game.

Overall, not a great performance by the reserves, but they got the result. Good work on the high pressure defense, but the Wizards too made multiple silly mistakes. Against the last place team in USL-1, the Wizards should have been able to take this game in regulation.

Wizards Man of the Match - Boris Pardo - 2 PK saves in the shoot out is enough to earn you the man of the match honors. Although special mention needs to go to Espinoza, who is reporting late to the Honduran team so he could play in the game, and played the full 120 minutes after playing 90 minutes on Sunday.

Player Ratings - Pardo 6, Watson 5, Leathers 5, McKenzie 5, Marquess 4, Harrington 5, Morsink 5, Zusi 4, Espinoza 6, Thompson 5, Kraus 4. Subs Gomez 4, Lopez 5, Wolff 5

Updated Salaries

Back in the middle of March, the MLS players union updated the list of salaries that MLS players receive. Included in the list are all but one Wizards' player, Graham Zusi. Other than him, the entire Wizards roster is listed. There is one change from the last time I posted the salaries, and that is Michael Kraus who is actually a senior development player instead of a senior roster player, meaning his salary is $20,100 instead of $34,000 as it was originally listed. Three players were added to the salary list.

Added to the roster (first number is base, second is guaranteed):
Santiago Hirsig $75,000.00 $ 75,000.00
Rauwshan McKenzie $34,008.00 $34,008.00
Nelson Pizarro $15,300.00 $15,300.00

Getting Hirsig for $75,000 would appear to be a bit of a steal for a player who was regularly in the team for San Lorenzo down in Argentina. A little surprised that McKenzie is getting a senior roster spot this year, but maybe there's a plan for something in the future. Pizarro is the team's lowest paid player, he's also the only regular developmental player.
