Getting this update out early this week due to the holiday.  All the games from tonight will be on next week's update. Boris Pardo is currently out of the country with the US Futsal national team as the back up goalkeeper to his Comets teammate, Danny Waltman.  The US is 1-1 losing to Panama and beating Canada.  The other news is that former player, Adam Cristman has retired.  Cristman who had played for DC and LA after leaving KC, has had some concussion issues has decided to call it a career.

Former SKC Wizards Update

Another former SKC Wizards update a day late due to the game last night. Some big news involving former Wizards this week. First, the big announcement that one of the greatest Wizards of all time, Jimmy Conrad is hanging them up and taking a job with the Chivas USA staff. A smart move for Conrad who hasn't played since early this season due to a concussion. Now NBC just needs to hire him to be in the booth next year. Also, I can't help but smile reading his goodbye. In other former player news, Eddie Johnson was coming to MLS, and now he's not. He's looking for more money, that MLS was not willing to pay. Can't say I fault either side, Johnson only has a few really high level years left probably and is looking for a final payday. On the other side, he hasn't exactly been lighting it up in Europe and giving him DP money wouldn't be worth it. Finally, MLS pool keeper, Chris Konopka got his first MLS start for New York over the weekend when they played Chicago. Here's the rest of this week's update.

It's a slow week of former Wizards news this week. Lots of former Wizards were off this past week with the World Cup kicking off. MLS only had two games in the past week. Herculez Gomez was about to come on, but didn't get on in the first World Cup game for the US. The other news of this week was that the US Open Cup kicked off with all the lower level US team's getting started yesterday. Other former Wizards returning to the list, at least for this week, is Scott Vermillion, and Sergei Raad who both played in the Open Cup, although through more research, Raad has played more for Central Florida. A very big week for former Wizards around the world. Not only did Herculez Gomez become the first American born player to lead a foreign first division in goals, the rest of the former Wizards picked up the goal scoring slack with him suspended for the final week of the Mexican season. This week 10 goals were scored by former Wizards, including Adam Cristman, Vicente Arze, Ryan Pore, Eddie Johnson, and Yura Movsisyan. Combine that with 3 more assists (Cristman, Pore, and Doug DeMartin), and 3 shutouts (Will Hesmer, Neal Kitson, and Chris Konopka) and this is probably the best week for former Wizards since I've been tracking them.

Cristman Traded

Last year I spoke with some excitement when the Wizards traded for forward Adam Cristman. I thought given the chance he could be a big time goal scorer for the Wizards. Unfortunately a foot fracture and a hamstring injury limited Cristman to only 5 appearances for the Wizards, 3 starts, and only 213 minutes played. For those that missed it on Twitter today (still the best way to keep in touch with this blog during the day), Cristman's time in KC came to an end. Cristman was traded to DC United today for an international slot for two years.

Overall I like this trade and it makes a lot of sense. The Wizards are currently stacked at forward, with Teal Bunbury, Zoltan Hercegfalvi, Kei Kamara, and Josh Wolff already with the team, it was going to be hard to justify having a 5th forward on the roster, and Cristman appeared to be the odd man out. I thought the Wizards would have trouble trading Cristman due to his lack of playing time and his injuries the past two seasons. But former Wizards coach Curt Onalfo brings in a player he helped originally bring to KC. And to get an international slot for him is a good move, especially with the number of foreign players currently in camp for KC. A smart move in my opinion by the Wizards team.

Rangers Beat Creighton

The Swope Park Rangers started the fall portion of their "season" with a 4-2 win over the University of Creighton today out at the Swope Park training facility. You can follow the twitter updates of the game over at the Wizards twitter page. Here's the lineup that started the game.

From what I was told by people at the game, the Rangers had a few early chances, beating the keeper, but unable to beat the post. It was actually Creighton that grabbed the lead as they scored on a breakaway. The Rangers, though, came back as the half wore on through Adam Cristman. Cristman tied the game up as he rounded the keeper. He made it 2-1 soon after as Jonathan Leathers made an overlapping run and crossed to Cristman.

Swope Park made one change at half time, as Michael Kraus entered the game for Graham Zusi. Creighton made it 2-2 when one of their players intercepted a poor back pass. The Rangers made more changes as the half went on, as Josh White, Eric Kronberg, and Kevin Souter all entered the game as the half went on. Kraus put the Rangers up for good with a header at the back post to make it 3-2. They sealed the game when Aaron Hohlbein connected with a Souter corner kick and headed it into the net.

This was the second time the Rangers have played Creighton this season, as they tied 2-2 back in the spring.

Since scoring 3 goals in the first half against New England back on June 13th, the Wizards have scored 1 goal in the next 13 halves of soccer.

Herculez Gomez is the only player to play in all 25 games the Wizards have played in all competitions this season.

Gomez and Kevin Hartman are the only 2 players to have appeared in all 20 league games this season.

Hartman is the only Wizards player to start all 20 games this season.

Adam Cristman's appearance last night was his 50th in MLS play for his career.

Josh Wolff made his 116th start in all competitions for the Wizards, tying him with Uche Okafor for 13th on that list.

Jack Jewsbury started his 136th game in all competitions, breaking a tie with Diego Gutierrez for 10th place on that list.

Sunday After Stats

Last night was Josh Wolff's 100th MLS start for the Wizards. He's the 15th player to hit that mark for the Wizards.

It was Wolff's 107th appearance for the Wizards in league play, breaking a tie with Sasha Victorine for 17th on the all time list.

Also Wolff's 113th start in all competitions for the Wizards, tying Sean Bowers for 14th all time.

Adam Cristman made his first appearance for the Wizards.

Claudio Lopez's goal was his 11th career goal in league play for the Wizards, tying him with Francisco Gomez and Paul Wright for 19th on the all time list.

It was also Lopez's 13th goal in all competitions for the Wizards, tying him with Chris Henderson and Jack Jewsbury for 18th on that list.

Kevin Hartman made his 77th start for the Wizards in league play, tying him with Chris Brown for 19th on the list.

It was also Hartman's 99th straight start in league play.

Cristman Ready to Play

Today the Wizards announced that forward Adam Cristman has been removed from the team's disabled list and is available to play this weekend against the Galaxy. Cristman has missed time since breaking his fifth metatarsal in the Wizards preseason. He's been practicing for the past few weeks getting more and more time in contact games. From practice earlier this week, it looks like Cristman is ready to get on the field tomorrow against the Galaxy.

Sunday After Stats (Monday Edition)

In the 37th minute, Kevin Hartman hit the 35,000 minute mark in all competitions, he finished with 35,053 minutes played.

Of the 15 players that saw the field yesterday, only Abe Thompson had previously played in SuperLiga. Adam Cristman has also seen the field in SuperLiga. They are the only two Wizards to play in the tournament.

First competitive international club game in MLS for Matt Besler, Roger Espinoza, Michael Harrington, Santiago Hirsig, Aaron Hohlbein, Jonathan Leathers, Claudio Lopez, and Lance Watson.

Jack Jewsbury's 171st appearance in all competitions for KC, breaking a tie with Mo Johnston for 8th on the all time list.

Practice Observations

Made it out to practice today and along with the interview with Kevin Hartman, I thought I'd throw out a few observations from practice today. First, the Wizards 3 long term injuries, Eric Kronberg, Chance Myers, and Adam Cristman all continue to recover and get closer to actually being back. Kronberg today was actually able to do some light diving during some keeper drills today. Myers continues his comeback, he's a week or two ahead of Cristman in his recovery and is doing more work with the ball than Cristman is. Cristman is getting closer, but he's still not able to do much running right now yet, possibly next week he'll be able to do some running.

People worried about Lance Watson's shin injury he suffered in Salt Lake can rest easy as he was practicing just fine today, with the part of shin wrapped very tightly. The one bit of worrisome news was that Josh Wolff sat out the second half of the scrimmage today with some small injury issues. They don't seem to be too serious as he played just fine in the first half of the scrimmage. When Wolff went out, Abe Thompson moved into the first team and teamed with Claudio Lopez up top. Overall I'd still expect Wolff to be starting come Saturday.

Player Interviews

The winner of this past week's player interview poll was the Wizards' right back, Lance Watson. Out at practice yesterday, Thad from The Back Post and I were able to speak with Watson for a few minutes. Watson talks about being in the starting lineup now and his contribution to the team. He talks about winning the ball back after he loses it, relating it to his former play as a midfielder. He talks about the game up in Toronto and then gives an interesting comparison between the fans in Seattle and the fans in Toronto. Watson says the Seattle fans are more constant noise behind their team, while Toronto is more of a European feel with chants and songs. He continues by talking about the current 10 day break the team is on and how it affects the team. We also were able to get a few thoughts of his on the upcoming game with DC.

Thad and I were also able to get an interview with this week's runner up, injured striker, Adam Cristman. Cristman talks about his current progress coming back from his injury and whether he's on schedule, ahead, or behind. He compares his recovery to that of Chance Myers, who had the same surgery earlier in the offseason. Cristman gave his impressions of the team, the organization, and the city since he's been here, including his opinion on some of the BBQ he's had so far. I asked him about keeping in touch with his old teammates in New England, he mentions his friendship with Brad Knighton, who has been in goal for New England as of late. He also talks about the tackle on Stever Ralston and the retaliation by Khano Smith a few weeks later in New England.

In the second part of the interview, Cristman talked about his hobbies, including his musical talent and his interest in hunting, as well as joking around.

Injury Issues for KC

It's early in the season, but already Kansas City is suffering through some major injury issues on their team. Before the season even really got started, the Wizards were already missing 3 players that were expected to be on the opening day 18 man roster. Eric Kronberg, Chance Myers, and Adam Cristman all missed the start of the season due to surgery of some kind. Kevin Souter also has had some injury issues as he's missed the Wizards first two games due to a adductor strain. That right there is 8 games missed by players that were expected to battle for playing time and be on the game day roster. Then this past week in Colorado the Wizards were without Josh Wolff due to a hamstring issue for a total of 9 games missed. If you want you could also factor in Davy Arnaud, who while he was on the bench for the game against Colorado it seemed unlikely that he was actually going to play in that game, then the total is up to 10 games missed by players due to injury.

Then you have practice this week. Today out at practice, Michael Harrington was not out practicing with the team, and he apparently left practice early yesterday. Today another player went down it would seem, as Graham Zusi left practice early today. Both of those two have started the Wizards first two games this season. Hopefully both will be able to go this weekend along with Arnaud. Because if not, KC could be in more trouble against San Jose.
