Sporting Kansas City closed out the first leg of their preseason for the 2014 season with a 3-1 win over NASL side, Indy Eleven. Sporting fell behind after just 20 seconds on a goal by one of Indy's trialists. Sporting struck back quickly with a pair of goals in the ninth and eleventh minutes on goals by Claudio Bieler and CJ Sapong. After a short break at the 45 minute mark Sporting came out and pulled the same trick Indy did, scoring an early goal as Sal Zizzo got his second goal of the preseason to make it 3-1 KC. The match, originally scheduled to play 120 minutes ended up going 105 minutes instead. Sporting will now return to Kansas City for a week before heading to Orlando.
All but two players on Sporting's roster have played in at least one preseason game now. The two that haven't are third string goalkeeper, Jon Kempin, and midfielder Peterson Joseph, who has not played since he collapsed in practice last November. The absence of Mikey Lopez and Ike Opara since the preseason opener is also interesting though.
Sporting Release Five
Before the game today, Sporting announced that they'd trimmed their preseason roster by five and currently sit at 29 players. Of those waived was former Sporting KC Junior goalkeeper, Jacole Turner, a long shot originally to make the roster with three goalkeepers already on the roster. Also waived was fourth round draft pick, Reinaldo Brenes, the Costa Rican forward, former Philadelphia Union defender/forward Don Anding, undrafted midfielder, Dante Marini, and Palbo Punyed, drafted in the 2012 Supplemental draft.
All but Turner had made at least one appearance for Sporting so far this preseason. Punyed and Marini both appeared in KC's first two preseason games. Anding and Brenes both made just a single appearance for Sporting.
Their departure leaves Sporting with four players not under contract in camp, draft picks Adnan Gabeljic, Peter Schmetz, Alex Martinez, and the infamous "Trialist 1" who according to the stream of the Portland game is former Colorado defender, Danny Earls. Peter Vermes has said that they'd be bringing in more players when the team goes to Orlando, but at this time there are just four roster spots to be grabbed at this time.

Sporting Bringing in Former Academy Player?

While on Twitter today, I came across the above Tweet from USA Prospects, an account that keeps track of US products playing abroad. Jacole Turner, a former Sporting KC academy player left Kansas City in late 2012 and headed over to Europe, signing with Athletico Madrid's C team.
Back on Monday the 6th, Turner posted the following on his Facebook page: "I'm going back to where it all started Sporting Kansas City here I come!"
So Turner looks to be on his way back to Kansas City and Sporting. There are a couple questions though. Is Turner actually being offered a contract? Or is he just coming in for a trial with preseason? If he is being offered a contract, then what are the plans for him? KC already has Eric Kronberg and Jon Kempin and also traded for Andy Gruenebaum. Most teams carry just three goalkeepers on the roster, so the thought of having a fourth in Turner is an interesting idea. Could KC be looking to get rid of a goalkeeper and let Kempin/Turner be a back up? Or could KC look into loaning out both Kempin and Turner next season to their USL-Pro affiliates? One to Oklahoma City, one to Orlando? Will be interesting to see what if anything comes of this.

Juniors and Former Juniors News
Some news from the youth system for you. First some news on players currentlying in the academy.
Erik Palmer-Brown, one of the players on Sporting's U16 developmental academy team is going to be spending some time away it appears.
That Tweet from the high schooler is fairly straight forward, Palmer-Brown is set to make his way to Florida, and most likely Bradenton to spend time in camp there with the players in residency there. There's been plenty of talk in youth soccer circles about Palmer-Brown and he looks set to become the next Sporting Junior to spend time with the US youth national teams.
Now some quick hits on some former Juniors players.
First, Jacole Turner, who was originally supposed to attend Barton County Community College this year, but instead remained with the Juniors. Turner left the Juniors and headed abroad. There he spent time in Croatia with Dynamo Zagreb before moving to Spain where he trialed with Real Madrid. He ended up being signed by Athletico Madird. Turner will start his career with the Spanish club this January.
Good luck to him in his journey. There will be some people wondering why Sporting didn't sign the goalkeeper. With Jon Kempin already under contract, and Kempin is only a year older than Turner. With 3 keepers already on Sporting's roster with Jimmy Nielsen and Eric Kronberg joining Kempin there was no need to add another, especially one that would be only a year younger than Kempin. I think signing Turner would have been detrimental to both Kempin and Turner. You would have been trying to develop two young goalkeepers at the same time. Both would need time in reserve games, early US Open Cup games and there likely wouldn't have been enough games to go around. It sucks to lose a keeper with the talent of Turner, but from some comments thrown around, they will both be good professionals.
The other former Junior news is that for Nate Opperman. The freshman at Evansville has been named one of the top 100 freshman this past year in college soccer. Opperman scored 3 goals as a freshman for the Purple Aces, all 3 of which were game winners.

Turner Called into US U18 Camp
The future certainly appears to be bright at the goalkeeper position for Sporting KC. Not only is KC's current back up, Jon Kempin, only 19 years old, but on the current Juniors team, Sporting KC also has another keeper that is going to spend time with a US youth national team. U18 goalkeeper, Jacole Turner has been invited to a camp with the US U18 team in Carson, CA. The camp is March 25th through April 1st. Turner is one of four goalkeepers named to the roster, 3 of which are based with MLS teams currently.
Turner will be going to Barton County Community College this coming fall, likely hoping to follow a similar path that saw Kevin Ellis earn a first team contract after a few years at the community college.
It'll be interesting to see how Turner develops. KC would be hard pressed to keep two goalkeepers so close in age to each other, so KC could be placed with a decision of keeping Kempin or Turner and having to let the other go. In the mean time it's at least a good thing to even dream about a competition like that for KC's goalkeeper position. Especially since KC has never been known as a team that has developed their own goalkeeper, usually picking up an older veteran to mind the net for the team (latest examples, Tony Meola, Kevin Hartman, and Jimmy Nielsen).
