US Soccer has released ballots for this year's hall of fame induction. On the two ballots (players and veterans) there are a combined five former Kansas City players that are eligible for selection. On the players ballot there are two players, former player and assistant coach, Chris Henderson, and former another former midfielder, Chris Klein is also available in his first year of eligibility. On the veterans ballot there are three players, Mike Burns, Frank Klopas, and Mike Sorber. All five of the players are all currently, or have recently been in coaching or MLS front office position since their retirement as a player.
In other news, former defender Yann Songo'o has a new club, at least temporarily. Songo'o has left Blackburn, going on loan to SPL side, Ross County for the rest of the season. Here's the rest of this week's update.

Five Former KC Players Up for Hall of Fame
US Soccer came out with their list of players eligible for election to the US Soccer Hall of Fame. On the main list and the veteran ballot, there is a total of five former Wizards on the ballot. On the main ballot there are two players. Chris Henderson and Roy Lassiter. Henderson, who is currently the technical director in Seattle spent the 1999 and 2000 season with Kansas City before being traded to Miami. He returned to Kansas City as an assistant coach in 2007 before moving into his role in Seattle. Lassiter spent the 2001 and part of the 2002 season in Kansas City before being traded away. He'd been brought in to help replace Miklos Molnar's goals but was unable to.
On the veterans ballot there are three more former KC players. Mike Burns ended his playing career in Kansas City, playing the 2001 and 2002 seasons with Kansas City. He's currently the director of soccer for the New England Revolution. Mike Sorber was the then KC Wiz's first allocated player back in 1996. He only spent the one season in KC before being traded to New York. After his playing days he's spent time as an assist with the US national team and Montreal Impact. The final KC player up for election is the team's current coach and technical director, Peter Vermes. Vermes spent the 2000 through 2002 season in Kansas City before retiring.

Vermes, Zavagnin, and Six Other Former Wizards Up for Hall of Fame
Today, US Soccer came out with their list of candidates available for selection to the US Soccer Hall of Fame. On that list are two current coaches of Sporting KC. Head coach and technical director, Peter Vermes is on the list again, as is assistant coach, Kerry Zavagnin, in his first year of eligibility. Vermes is in the final year on the "player ballot", should he not be elected to the Hall of Fame this year, he will move to the veteran ballot next year.
Vermes and Zavagnin are joined by five other former Wizards players on the players ballot, and one other is available on the veterans ballot. Two other former Wizards are like Zavagnin and in their first year of eligibility. Joining Zavagnin is Jose Burciaga Jr. and Tony Meola in their first year of eligibility. The other 3 former Wizards players available are Mike Burns, Chris Henderson, and Roy Lassiter. Burns, like Vermes is in his final year of being eligible for election on the player's ballot. Should he not be elected, he'll join Vermes and Mike Sorber on the veterans ballot. Sorber joined the veterans ballot a few years ago.
Of the former Wizards players up for election, I think Meola is probably the leading candidate to get elected on this ballot. Meola was the starter for the US in the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and has 100 caps for the US national team.

Four Former Wizards Up for Hall of Fame
Today US Soccer announced the nominees up for the US Soccer Hall of Fame. On the list are four former Wizards players. Included in the list is one current member of the Wizards staff, technical director and head coach Peter Vermes. Vermes played in eastern Europe and MLS during his playing career at both forward and defender. He started his career as a forward before moving to defense and winning defender of the year in 2000 with the Wizards. He appeared 67 times for the national team scoring 11 goals.
Also nominated are Mike Burns, Chris Henderson, and Roy Lassiter. All three players spent two seasons in KC, Burns and Lassiter for the 2001 and 2002 season while Henderson was on the team in the 1999 and 2000 season. Henderson played the most, appearing in 61 games for the Wizards and appearing 73 times for the national team. Burns appeared in 43 games for KC and 75 times for the national team. Lassiter appeared 25 times for KC and 30 for the US.
Good luck to the four on their potential election.

Former Wizards Up for Hall of Fame
The US National Soccer Hall of Fame has come out with their 24 finalists for this years induction into the Hall of Fame. Six former Wizards are on the list this year, as Mike Burns, Chris Henderson, Roy Lassister, Preki, Mike Sorber, and Peter Vermes are all up for induction. Sorber, the Wizards first allocation back in 1996 is in his final year of eligibility before being moved to the veterans ballot along with Thomas Dooley, John Doyle, and Dominic Kinnear. The Wizards 2000 leader in points, Chris Henderson, is in his first year of eligibility with John O'Brien and Eduardo Hurtado.
For me, Preki is the only surefire Hall of Famer in the list of former Wizards that are up for election with Sorber and Vermes being the next two most likely. The other 3 I think have very minimal chances. Voters can select up to 10 names of players on their ballot, if I had a vote, here'd be my ballot: Preki, Thomas Dooley, Earnie Stewart, Shannon MacMillan, and Joe-Max Moore.

Wizards Killers
With the season getting ready to start, I thought I'd take a look at a few more stats and post on some of them. One thing that's at least interesting to me, is who has been the biggest thorn in the Wizards side? What player has stepped up their game against KC and scored the most goals against the Wizards?
Here are the top 10 goal scorers against the Wizards throughout their history.
1. Jason Kreis - Dallas/RSL - 17 goals. Five more then the next closest player, the current coach of Real Salt Lake is the biggest thorn in the Wizards side.
2. Ante Razov - Chicago/NY/Chivas - 12 goals. Razov is one of three players still playing in MLS on this list of players. He scored 2 goals against the Wizards last season in their 2-1 loss out in LA.
2T. Ronald Cerritos - San Jose/Dallas - 12 goals. I remember Cerritos being a major pain when the Wizards played his team when I was younger. He seemed to be all over the field against the Wizards.
4. Clint Mathis - LA/NY/CO - 11 goals. Now playing in Greece, Mathis scored the majority of his 11 goals before he left MLS the first time.
5. Jeff Cunningham - Columbus/CO/RSL - 9 goals. The second active MLSer on this list, Cunningham is now in Toronto and will be looking to become the fourth player in MLS history to hit 100 goals.
6T. Cobi Jones - LA - 8 goals. Jones retired at the end of this past season, but Jones was a pain for the Wizards through to the end, as he scored two in his final season against the Wizards.
6T. Landon Donovan - SJ/LA - 8 goals. The youngest player on this list, Donovan is tied for second in the most productive season against the Wizards, with 4 goals in 2003.
6T. Chris Henderson - CO/Columbus/NY - 8 goals. The former Wizards player and assistant coach always seemed to lift his game against Kansas City. He was especially dangerous after leaving KC, with 6 of his 8 goals coming after he was traded away from KC.
6T. John Spencer - CO - 8 goals. Spencer had a very productive 3 season stretch against the Wizards from 2001 through 2003, he scored all 8 of his goals against KC.
6T. Ariel Graziani - Dallas/SJ - 8 goals. Like Spencer, Graziani scored all 8 of his goals in 3 seasons.
You'll notice that 3 of the top 4 goal scorers in MLS history are on this list along with the leading scorer in US Men's National Team history as well. Seven of the 10 are also in the top 20 in all of MLS history for goals as well. The only ones missing from the list are Henderson (22), Graziani (28), & Spencer (36).

Wizards Fantasy Draft Rounds 3 & 4
Continuing with the fantasy draft tonight are rounds 3 and 4. Here are the first two rounds.
3 (1). Team Shook - Chris Klein - Klein is second in every major offensive category in Wizards history with 39 goals, 45 assists, and 123 points. Klein is also fourth on the career list of games played and minutes played. Klein also was a force in the playoffs, adding 3 more goals and 4 assists, none bigger than his assist on Miklos Molnar's 2000 MLS Cup winning goal.
Klein was also the definition of resilience, twice winning MLS Comeback Player of the Year awards in 2002 and 2005 for his strong recovery from njuries to both of his knees.
3 (2). Team DTB - Kerry Zavagnin - Not known for his offensive talent (8 goals in 8 years with the Wizards) Zavagnin is on the field to disrupt the opposing team's passing game. After the 2000 season, he began to feature for the US National team, earning 21 caps. In 2004 he was named to the MLS Best XI. And in 2007 after a few years without scoring, scored 3 highlight real goals, including a 30 yard bomb against Chivas that was a finalist for GOTY.
3 (3). Bravado F.C. - Kevin Hartman - Hartman holds several MLS goalkeeping records (first to 100 wins, first back-to-back GAA<1.00 and 20-win seasons, league leader in shutouts) and while those records were largely established with the archnemesis Los Angeles Galaxy, Hartman has proven himself worthy of selection among the all-time best Wizards. After being acquired for the 2007 season, "El Gato" led the Wizards back to the playoffs for the first time since 2004, then led the Wizards to the Western Conference Championship recording back-to-back shutouts against Chivas USA. Although the 33-year old is said to have lost a step, his reactions and positioning are - in the opinion of Bravado F.C. - superior to any goalkeeper the Wizards have had to date.
4 (1). Bravado F. C. - Peter Vermes - Although Vermes struggled with injuries during his final two seasons in Wizards blue, his performance in 2000 is good enough to cement him as one of the best defenders ever to have played for Kansas City. Named the MLS Defender of the Year in 2000, Vermes led a defensive unit that recorded 16 shutouts and an amazing 0.91 goals-against average en route to a league double, winning the 2000 Supporter's Shield and MLS Cup. Vermes' influence continues with the Wizards today as he currently holds the position of Technical Director.
4 (2). Team DTB - Davy Arnaud - While his most productive season for the Wizards was at forward, I expect Davy to line up on the wing for DTB when we take the field. His work ethic and tenacity on the field will bring an extra level to the players on the team.
4 (3). Team Shook - Chris Henderson - Henderson is second all-time in MLS games played, most of which came with the Colorado Rapids. However, Hendo's best season may have been in 2000 when he lead the Wizards in scoring with 9 goals and 9 assists, earned an All-Star nod, and helped lead the team to the MLS Cup, earning the only championship of Henderson's long career.
In his two seasons manning the Wizards flank Hendo scored 13 goals and 15 assists, and earned a place as a fan favorite that lasts to this day.
3 (1). Team Shook - Chris Klein - Klein is second in every major offensive category in Wizards history with 39 goals, 45 assists, and 123 points. Klein is also fourth on the career list of games played and minutes played. Chris Henderson Gone
Steven Goff has broken this story on his blog today. Apparently Chris Henderson, the Wizards assistant coach, has left the team. Henderson, who played for the Wizards in the 1999 and 2000 season had rejoined the team as Curt Onalfo's assistant last season. According to Goff, Henderson was on the verge of joining Colorado in some capacity. That deal has apparently fallen through, and now Henderson could be on his way to join the Seattle expansion team next year.
Honestly, this sucks. Henderson has been a Wizards favorite for years. He's one of a small group of former Wizards including Diego Gutierrez, Preki, and Mo Johnston that get the full respect of the Cauldron when they return to KC each year. I'm going to miss Henderson in KC, but good luck to him.

Wizards top scorers through 1999
Back with the top 20 scorers in Wizards history through the 1999 season.
Here are the 1996, 1997, and 1998 top scorers as well.
The 1999 season was definitly one to forget for Wizards fans. The Wizards started the season 0-7, including two loses by shootout. Combine that with their 3 game losing streak to end the 1998 season, and the Wizards went 10 games without a win, finally earning their first win of the season May 8th against the Galaxy. They also did not score a goal until the 4th game of the season in their 2-1 shootout loss to San Jose, April 10th. It was the teams first goal since September 5th the year before. It was also the end of the line for the teams first coach, Ron Newman.
The number in parenthesis after the goal total is the players change in position from the year before. Pictures on this entry will only be of players who are making their first appearance on the list, for pictures of each player, check previous entries. So here are the top scorers through the 1999 season.
1. Preki - 47 (-)
2. Vitalis "Digital" Takawira - 28 (-)
3. Mo Johnston - 26 (-)
4. Mark Chung - 20 (-)
5. Paul Wright - 11 (-)
6. Frank Klopas - 7 (-)
7. Chris Klein - 6 (N/A) - A fan favorite for the Wizards for a long time on the wing before his trade to RSL before the 2006 season.
8T. Chris Brown - 4 (N/A) - Chris Brown is a great practice player, or at least that's what everyone said, because how else could it be justified to start him?
8T. Alex Bunbury - 4 (N/A) - Canadian international that played for the Wizards in 99 and 2000, but injuries in 2000 limited his appearances and these were all the goals he scored.

8T. Alexi Lalas - 4 (N/A) - Came over with Tony Meola from New York. This was his only season in the Wizards blue as he "retired" after the season, only to come back and play a few more years for LA.
8T. Matt McKeon - 4 (-1)

Another season, and this time there are finally 20 goal scorers in the Wizards history. This is also the last season that a player with only 1 or 2 goals appears on the list. The 2000 season will either be up later tonight or tomorrow.

8T. Paul Rideout - 4 (-1)
8T. Mike Sorber - 4 (-1)

Wizards Home for 2007
The Wizards are currently homeless. The team can't play in Arrowhead next year due to the renovations that will be occurring there. Since that time, there has been plenty of debate over where the Wizards would play. Most of that debate seemed to focus on a high school facility in Johnson County. Sites that were consistently brought up by Wizards fans were Blue Valley Atheltic Complex, Olathe District Athletic Complex, Rockhurst High School, Park University, and College Boulevard Activity Center.
Recently an email went out to many Wizards season ticket holders and other fans. This email came with 6 possible locations to play at and fans were asked to rank them 1 through 6 on their order of preference. The six locations were
That leaves us with 3 possible locations, Ray-Pec, Rockhurst, and CBAC. While Ray-Pec had been the one getting the publicity about the Wizards coming there, among Wizards fans it apparently did not do so well, finishing near the bottom of the voting for the 6 locations. In an email that an employee of the school district posted on bigsoccer.com recently, the district said that the Wizards were going to be playing somewhere else next season.
So from the six above, we're now down to 2 locations, CBAC and Rockhurst. One deciding factor in location could be the playing surface, the players have apparently been pushing for a natural grass facility, which would rule out Rockhurst which has field turf. Then today in the star in an article about Ray-Pec's being out of the running for the Wizards, the superintendent was apparently told that the Wizards would be going to Olathe for their games. If this is to be believed that they are going to be playing in Olathe, and those 2 locations are the only 2 left, that means that the Wizards home for the next 2 season will be College Boulevard Activity Center. Take that for what you will, but it seems that next season the Wizards will be playing at the same location as the 2005 NAIA women's National Championships were held.
