The Missouri Comets broke up the "good old boys" finals of the past few seasons. After the Baltimore Blast took care of the Chicago Soul last night in Baltimore and the Milwaukee win at the Independence Events Center it looked like the league was on it's way to a third straight Baltimore vs Milwaukee finals series. Instead, the Comets scored the final goal of regulation with under a minute remaining to send the game to the mini game with a 9-8 win, and scored with only 5 seconds left in the mini game to book the trip to the final winning 5-4. The Comets will now play the Blast, looking to win their first title since the team relaunched 3 years ago.
Here's the press release from the team about the two games.
In what has been the most exciting playoff series so far this year, the Comets and Milwaukee Wave battled for 75 minutes to determine who would face the Baltimore Blast for the MISL Championship. The MISL Playoffs are played with two full games and, if necessary, a 15 minute ‘mini-game’ to decide the winner. After being down 8-5 in Game Two and 4-3 in the ‘mini-game’ the Comets came back both times to win Game Two 9-8 and Game Three 5-4.
After losing Game One 12-10 in overtime on Thursday night, the Comets knew they had a big mountain to climb today. To advance to the next round, they would first have to be only the second team to win in Milwaukee’s US Cellular Arena this season and then beat them again in a 15 minute ‘Mini-Game’.
They got behind early when the Game One hero for Milwaukee, Guiliano Oliverio scored halfway through the opening quarter. Oliviero’s initial shot was saved by Comets goalkeeper, Danny Waltman, but was still bouncing slowly towards the goal-line. Vahid Assadpour raced to save it off the line, but his shot went off Oliviero’s head and in the net. Jeff Hughes put the Comets on the board 3 minutes later when his cross in front of the Wave goal was deflected in by the Milwaukee defender. In the second quarter, the Wave were the only ones to tally a score and took a 4-2 lead into the half.
The Comets and Wave traded goals in the third period. Coady Andrews’ goal was a three-point shot that went between the legs of two Milwaukee defenders before passing Wave goalkeeper, Marcel Feenstra. Andrews’ goal got the Comets to within one point and they were only down 6-5 as they entered the final quarter of Game Two.
Oliviero tried to put it away for Milwaukee nine seconds into the fourth quarter. He took advantage of a defensive miscue from the Comets and scored over Danny Waltman’s head. Leading 8-5, the Wave fell into a defensive shell, giving Missouri the bulk of the possession in the quarter. Feenstra was unrelenting though as he faced several shots from the Comets and turned most of them away. Brian Harris was able to get the Comets back within one though when he took a shot from outside the penalty box that ricocheted through the Wave defense and into the net. The Comets brought Vahid Assadpour on as a sixth attacker with around two minutes remaining in the game to try and overcome their 8-7 deficit. With 34 seconds remaining they were able to do just that when Leo Gibson, returning from a three-game suspension, deflected a ball into the net. The Comets won Game Two 9-8, forcing a Game Three ‘Mini-Game’.
The ‘Mini-Game’ is a full 15 minute period and counts as a completely separate game, with scores reset to zero. Coady Andrews, who scored only four goals all season, knocked in his second three-point goal of the day only two minutes into the extra game. Milwaukee is the two-time defending champion though and was not ready to give up their chance for a three-peat. Luan Oliviera weaved through the Comets defense for a goal, then had the assist four minutes later when Hewerton’s goal put the Wave in front 4-3 with a little over five minutes to play.
Once again, bringing on Assadpour as the sixth attacker proved to be the solution. The extra pressure that comes from having one more attacker than the Wave had defenders forced Milwaukee to put the ball out of bounds and gave the Comets a corner kick with less than twenty seconds left. Milan Ivanovic threaded the needle on the restart and found a wide-open Byron Alvarez at the penalty mark. The former MISL MVP wasted no time and buried the shot and the Wave.
The Comets advance to the MISL Finals for the first time since they returned to the league in 2010. Game One will be played at the Independence Events Center on Thursday March 14th at 7:35pm. Tickets will be on sale tomorrow, March 11th, at 1:00pm. The Comets offices will be open at 9:00am. For questions and information call 855.4KC.GOAL (855.452.4625).

Comets Fall in Overtime
The Comes had a good start to their first round playoff match up against the Milwaukee Wave, but couldn't make it stand up. Missouri jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Wave by the early point of the third quarter, but couldn't keep the lead and ended up falling 12-10 in overtime against the Wave putting themselves into a tough situation needing to win the game in Milwaukee Sunday and the mini game after.
The game was delayed for about 20 minutes after a piece of plexiglass above the goal broke during warmups.
The Comets started much of the first quarter on the back foot as the Wave had much of the possession. They really didn't get the shots to amount to much for the Wave though, it just let to a very quick quarter. As the quarter went on, the Comets started to get more of the ball as the quarter went on. Finally with under 5 minutes left the Comets grabbed the lead. Danny Waltman played a ball down the line for Byron Alvarez. Alvarez turned on his defender and fired a shot on goal. Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg made the save but pushed the shots right into the path of Coady Andrews who chested the ball down and fired it past Vorberg and into the net making it 2-0 Comets. With less than a minute left, the Comets doubled their lead. The Comets had plenty of possession and then Jeff Hughes played a nice through ball to Milan Ivanovic, who one timed the ball into the far corner to make it 4-0 Comets.
The second quarter saw the Wave come out attacking from the start and they won a free kick at the top of the arc. Ibrahim Kante blocked the initial shot off the restart. Robert Palmer then played the ball up the field to Hughes who was racing down the field. Hughes was able to get Vorberg to commit and then laid the ball off the Mads Falck. Falck tapped the ball home to make it 6-0 Comets. The Comets continued to push the game and then with just over 3 minutes gone the Comets went on the power play after a blue card on Tom Oatley. The Comets took advantage of the man advantage passing the ball around the perimeter before it got to Alvarez in the corner. He played a cross to the back post where Hughes headed it home to make it 8-0. The Wave really pushed the game from there trying to get back into the game, but the Comets defense held them off as the Comets went into the half up 8-0.
Comets came out in the 3rd quarter looking to extend the lead. Lucas Rodriguez hit the inside of the post from 3 point range but couldn't get the ball to go in. Then with just under 5 minutes played the Comets made it 10-0. The Comets worked the ball around their end before Cristiano raced towards goal. He flicked the ball over to Robert Palmer who buried his volley past Vorberg to give the Comets some breathing room. Shortly after that though the Wave were on the board. Off a restart in the corner, Luan Oliveira fed the ball quickly to Hewerton who put it top shelf on Waltman to make it 10-2. The Wave continued to push for another goal and late in the quarter the Wave got it. Fabio Ribeiro played a pass off the wall that bounced right into the middle of the box where Guiliano Oliviero tapped it home past Waltman. The Wave continued to push looking for more goals. The Comets got some chances at the other end but couldn't capitalize. With 3 seconds left the Wave had a fast break that Cristiano tried to slide to break up but caught the Wave player instead going to the box for the final 3 seconds. In those 3 seconds the Wave almost scored again, putting a header off the foot of the post.
Into the fourth quarter the Wave capitalized on the power play finally. A 3 pointer from Luan Oliveira was turned in by Hewerton appeared off his arm, but it counter and the gap was closed to 4. Both teams kept pushing for the next goal but both side were done in by superb goalkeeping by each keeper as the quarter wore on. Just around the half way point of the quarter the Wave cut the lead to a single goal when G. Oliviero received the ball in the corner and played it off the wall to L. Oliveira who tapped home to make it 10-8. The Wave continued to push while the Comets countered. With just over 3 minutes left the Wave went with the 6th attacker. The Comets had some chances but couldn't capitalize on the possession with another goal. Then with only 20 seconds left, G. Oliviero received the ball in the corner again and played a ball to the back post where Hewerton tapped it home to tie the game.
Into overtime the game went. Both teams slowed the game down a bit with the game level. As the quarter went on, both teams had their chances. Alvarez had the majority of the Comets chances forcing Vorberg into a few saves. With just over 6 minutes left in the game though the Wave won it. Oatley played a ball in to G. Oliviero who turned Kante and hit a shot that curled into the far corner to give the Wave the golden goal win 12-10.
As mentioned earlier, the Comets will now need to win 2 games in Milwaukee on Sunday. The first, a regular game, and then a mini game after that should they win on the road. The good news for the Comets is that they're the only team to win in Milwaukee this season, the bad news the Wave only lost that one game at home this year. It's going to be a big uphill climb for the Comets.

Comets Clinch 3rd in OT
With
playoff seeding on the line, the Comets traveled to Chicago to finish
their regular season against the Soul. The Comets needed a single win
to ensure themselves of the third seed in the 2013 MISL Playoffs. It
took more than four quarters, but Byron Alvarez scored three minutes
into the overtime period to give the Comets the 8-6 win against the
Chicago Soul.
After
waiting until the final six seconds to net a goal in their previous
matchup, the Comets jumped on the scoreboard first tonight. Ryan Junge
found Jeff Hughes along the left side, who buried his shot from close
range. Matthew Stewart was able to tie it up for Chicago with a nice
shot of his own from the side only a minute later.
Tied
2-2 at the start of the second quarter, Coach Kim Roentved employed a
high pressure strategy that saw two, and sometimes three, Comets players
with immediate pressure on any Soul player who gained possession in his
defensive third of the field. Ryan Junge earned his second helper of
the game, feeding Vahid Assadpour for the only score of the quarter.
Comets led at the break 4-2.
Relaxing
a bit from their high pressure stance, the Comets still had several
opportunities in the third quarter. The Comets controlled the ball
through much of the game, outshooting the soul 38-16 in the game. Matt
Stewart and Freddy Degand were able to break through the Missouri attack
late in quarter, scoring two goals in thirty seconds to put Chicago in
the lead briefly 6-4. However, Assadpour answered right back two
minutes later, intercepting a defensive clearance from Soul goalkeeper
Jeff Richey and passing to Robert Palmer. Palmer returned the pass and
Assadpour scored his second of the game, tying it up.
The
fourth quarter saw no scores as both teams applied tentative pressure,
not wanting to make a mistake as the clock wound down. With the score
tied 6-6, the fans who braved the weather in Chicago were treated to
overtime soccer. The Comets once again broke out their high-pressure
attack and controlled much of the action. After Chicago’s Carlos Munoz
was whistled for a foul to the right of his goal, Comets midfielder John
Sosa found Byron Alvarez on the restart for the goal and 8-6 victory.

Comets Clinch Playoff Spot
It wasn't easy, but the Comets clinched a playoff spot for the third straight year with a 15-11 win over the Wichita Wings that also clinched the Turnpike trophy for the Comets, winning the season series 4 games to 2.
Things didn't start out well for the Comets though. For the third straight game, the Comets were shutout in the first quarter. And for the third straight game they ended up falling behind. The Wings scored 3 goals in the first period, two from Frederico Moojen and another from Daniel Villegas to end the quarter up 6-0.
The Comets responded in the second quarter though, less than 30 seconds in they'd cut the lead in half. Brian Harris received a distribution from Danny Waltman. Harris played a wall pass to himself, beat his defender and raced down the field. He then fired a shot from just outside the 3 point line that beat Sanaldo. Forty seconds later and the Comets were within a point. Vahid Assadpour played a nice through ball to Jeff Hughes. Hughes tried to play a cross into the middle for Lucas Rodriguez. The cross though was deflected by a Wings' defender and past Sanaldo and into the net. Thirty seconds after Hughes goal, the Comets had the lead. Again it was through Harris who raced up the field and fired a shot from outside the yellow line that hit off the underside of the cross bar, hit the ground and bounced into the net giving the Comets an 8-6 lead. Both teams had their chances as the rest of the quarter continued, but neither was able to find the net.
The third quarter saw the Wings coming out attacking from the start and just over 5 minutes into the quarter the Wings had equalized through Andrew Hoxie. Both sides were looking to take the lead with KC pushing the game more as Wichita had replaced their goalkeeper at the half. Neither team was able to find a goal in the quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter though the Wings grabbed the lead again. Only 30 seconds in, Victor Quiroz fired a shot from outside the yellow line that Waltman could only get a hand on as it went in making the score 11-8 Wings. The Comets pushed the game and got a power play opportunity after a Wings player elbowed John Sosa. Missouri didn't score on the power play, but right as it expired, Byron Alvarez picked out Hughes at the back post and Hughes turned the shot in to get the Comets back within a point. The Comets continued to push the game trying to retake the lead and with just under 5 minutes remaining they got their goal. This time it came from a forward. Alvarez again was the creator, winning the ball at midfield before playing the ball through to Mads Falck. Flack collected the ball, let his defender rush past him and then fired a shot in at the near post to give the Comets a 12-11 lead. Shortly after that, the Wings pulled their goalkeeper going for the 6th attacker. The Comets created a few chances of their own but just missed wide. With just under 2 minutes left they iced the game. Assadpour won a ball and fed it to Falck as he ran down the wing. Falck took a touch looked up and then passed the ball into the empty net making it 15-11. The Comets killed the rest off the game off, giving them the win, a playoff berth and a chance to end the season at .500 with a win on Wednesday in Chicago.

Comets Hold on Against Rochester to Get Back to .500
The Missouri Comets have been fighting to get themselves back to .500 for a while now. Each time they get close to the .500 mark they end up falling back down. Tonight the Missouri Comets again got themselves back to .500 with a 12-11 win over the Rochester Lancers at the Independence Events Center. the previous 3 meetings between these teams this season has seen the winning team get at least a hattrick. In Rochester's two wins it's been Doug Miller, and in Missouri's two wins, it's been Leo Gibson.
Unlike the last time the two teams met in Independence, the Comets didn't jump out to a big lead. About 5 minutes into the game the Lancers got a blue card for too many men on the field. On the power play Missouri took advantage. Off a restart, John Sosa played a free kick into the box, where Leo Gibson had come in and he tapped the ball into the net making it 2-0. The Comets doubled the lead late in the first quarter. Gibson played the set up man this time. Gibson played a nice ball through the box to Lucas Rodriguez on the back side. Rodriguez didn't get the first shot off, but kept with the ball, collected it in the corner, turned and fired a ball into the net to make it 4-0.
The second quarter saw both teams shore up their defense as neither side was able to find the net.
The third quarter saw the Lancers finally get on the board. Jeremy Ortiz found Elliot Fauske on the right side, Fauske turned and fired a shot into the far corner to cut the lead to 4-2. A few minutes after the Lancers got the goal, the Comets restored their 4 point lead. Byron Alvarez and Rodriguez started a 2v1 break. Alvarez got the Lancers goalkeeper to commit and laid the ball off to Rodriguez. Rodriguez though hit the post with his effort on the open net. Luckily the ball bounced off the post right to Alvarez, who tapped the ball in to make it 6-2. Only 12 seconds in game play later it was 8-2. New signing, Jeff Hughes got the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that the goalkeeper got a piece of but it got past him and into the net making it 8-2. Fauske played a ball to Maruricio Sallas. Sallas fired a ball off the wall that had a ton of English on it and beat Danny Waltman to make it 8-5. Late in the quarter the Comets got the lead up to 5. Vahid Assadpour and Gibson almost collided as Assadpour dribbled across the yellow line. Gibson picked up the ball and continued dribbling towards the goal and fired a ball into the net. The Lancers pushed the game more and off a restart, Waltman came up huge. First off a restart Waltman parried a shot away, then before a Lancers' player could react to a rebound, Waltman punched the ball further away. With Waltman out of position, Cristiano made a save off the rebound shot, then on the rebound to Cristiano's block, Waltman recovered and made the save. With 19 seconds left in the quarter the Lancers cut the lead to 3 again as Andy Tiedt picked out Alan McGreal in the box. McGreal slotted his shot home to make it 10-7 after 3.
The fourth quarter the Comets sat back trying to keep possession while the Lancers were the ones attacking trying to get closer to the Comets. Almost 6 minutes into the quarter the Lancers cut the lead to 1. Tiedt played a nice through ball to Doug Miller who beat Waltman over his shoulder to make it 10-9. The Comets survived the pressure from the Lancers but with 6:20 left in the game Alvarez picked up his 4 foul of the half and had to go to the box with a blue card. The Lancers attacked relentlessly, but couldn't find a goal. Then as the penalty expired, the Lancers had a few more efforts, and Brian Harris cleared a ball of the line with his hand. Harris went to the box, and Miller buried the penalty kick to give the Lancers their first lead at 11-10. The lead didn't last long. The Comets came back down the field with Cristiano leading the attack, he fell to the ground, but recovered, got back to his feet and fired a shot. The shot bounced off the cross bar, on the line and back onto the cross bar and started bouncing out. But Gibson had run into the box and with Hannigan on the ground, headed the ball into the net to give the Comets the lead at 12-11. The Comets withstood the field 3 plus minutes of the game, with Waltman coming up big with a few saves as the Comets got their record to 10-10.
