Former SKC Wizards Update

Another week of former Wizards updates.  Lots of news outside of games for former Wizards.  Along with Roger Espinoza set to join the list of former Wizards, a number of former players are set to go into the reentry draft after being released from their MLS clubs.  Shavar Thomas and Tyson Wahl were already going to be entering that, and 3 more players today joined that list.  Will Hesmer, Khari Stephenson, and Kevin Hartman were all let go by their clubs.  Stephenson and Hesmer were not overly surprising.  Stephenson hadn't seen a lot of time for San Jose this year, while Hesmer was injured all last year and Andy Gruenebaum stepped up and proved to be a solid starter.  Hartman though was surprising, but does give Dallas cap room to play with now.  The other news regarding former Wizards is that Yura Movsisyan is being linked with a move to Spartak Moscow.  Movsisyan has denied the rumors, but Movsisyan could possibly be on the move this winter.  In other former Wizard news, Jamar Beasley has moved to Syracuse today, being traded by the Wichita Wings.  Here's the rest of this week's update.

Kostrov Waived

The Wizards are still working to sign forward Jamar Beasley to a contract, and while the deal isn't done, it's sounding likely it's only a matter of time. With Beasley's signing, that means that the Wizards will have to create a roster space. It appears that the Wizards have made that move. According to MLSsoccer.com the Wizards have waived Igor Kostrov. Kostrov had been brought in in the preseason along with countryman Alexi Casian. Kostrov had gotten himself offered a contract while Casian had not. Kostrov didn't make any appearances for the Wizards, nor did he make the bench. He appeared in a few of the Wizards scrimmages, scoring a few goals including ones against Baker and Tulsa.

Wizards Beat Baker

Today in a scrimmage out at Swope Park, the Wizards took on Baker University. Like previous midweek friendlies against college teams, it appears the Wizards had the first team play the first half while the Swope Park Rangers played the second half. The Wizards opened the scoring through Kei Kamara who scored the Wizards first two goals, the first on a tap in after Josh Wolff crossed to him. Shortly after Kamara scored a second from the top of the box. Wolff got in on the scoring shortly after when he headed home a rebound to make it 3-0. Davy Arnaud added the fourth as he dribbled in and rounded the keeper before burying it in the net. Before the half ended though, Baker pulled a goal back and went into the half down 4-1.

Full lineups weren't provided, but based off of the goal scorers, the Wizards brought on the Rangers in the second half and they continued to put the ball in the net. The fifth goal will make all our Indian friends happy as Sunil Chhetri found net. Goal number six was apparently a very nice goal from Igor Kostrov who scored directly from a corner kick when the Baker keeper misjudged it with the wind. The scoring was finished up by Santiago Hirsig who found net after chipping the keeper to make it 7-1.

While it's always good to get games in I do have a problem with this game. First is the fact that it's another game against a college team. MLS needs a reserve division really badly, teams get very little out of these games against college kids, most of whom aren't going to be playing soccer anywhere near the Wizards level. My other issue is Coach Peter Vermes playing the first team in these games. With the Wizards out of the US Open Cup, these games are really the only chance for the reserves to get playing time in games outside of practice, let the Rangers get the full 90 minutes and see what you have on your bench.

Wizards Take Down Tulsa

The Wizards got a midweek game in today before their friendly games this weekend against AC St. Louis and the University of Evansville. Today the Wizards took on the University of Tulsa. A game that I originally thought was likely to just be a game for the Rangers turned out to be wrong. The Wizards played a mix of starters and subs in the first half, Davy Arnaud, Stephane Auvray, Roger Espinoza, Jack Jewsbury, and Ryan Smith were the starters from Saturday night that did not play today. In their place in the first 11 were Korede Aiyegbusi, Zoltan Hercegfalvi, Santiago Hirsig, Igor Kostrov, and Graham Zusi. Also not appearing at all today was Birahim Diop, Chance Myers, and Craig Rocastle. In the first half, the Wizards only managed one goal against the college team, coming through Josh Wolff who scored on a shot from the top of the area.

In the second half, the Wizards made multiple changes, with only Aiyegbusi, Hercegfalvi, Kostrov, and Zusi staying on for the second half. The second half also saw the introduction of newly signed forward, Sunil Chhetri. The Rangers did a lot more damage to Tulsa. Teal Bunbury made it 2-0 off of a rebound. Aiyegbusi made it 3-0 when he hit a cross from almost midfield that got caught in the wind and drifted over the goalkeeper and into the net. Three became 4-0 when Chhetri got his first goal for KC in a scrimmage after Pablo Escobar and headed on a Kostrov corner kick. Tulsa grabbed a consolation goal on a 40 yard shot that caught Eric Kronberg off his line. Kostrov made it 5-1 when he picked up the scraps after guest player Kyle Brown found Bunbury with a cross. Bunbury's header went off the bar and Kostrov put it away. Many of these players are going to get more time on Saturday in St. Louis. I'll be there with Twitter updates for the games.

And for those curious, here's a video of Aiyegbusi's goal with great commentary from Peter Vermes.

Rocastle Signed, Smith and Kostrov Official, More on Chhetri, and Pardo Waived

Quite a bit of player news from the Wizards today involving different players coming to and leaving Kansas City. First the Wizards have signed one of their latest trialists to a contract. While the rumors had been that Sunil Chhetri would be signing with KC, he's not the latest signing. Instead it's Craig Rocastle, the midfielder who came into camp around the same time as Chhetri. This move appears to be in the works for a week or so now. Rocastle has played for multiple English teams in his 9 year professional career, last playing with Forest Green Rovers. Of the moves the Wizards have made this preseason, this may be the one I am most underwhelmed with. Rocastle is on his 15th team in 10 years as a professional player, playing 174 for the previous 14 over the 9 years. He's also been going the wrong way down the table from his height at Chelsea as he was most recently playing in the English Conference, the 5th division in England. At 28 years old, the fact that he's not made his way back up the table is frustrating that we've gone and signed the player who 's better known as being the brother of David Rocastle. This move just doesn't make a lot of sense in my opinion.

Moving onto more official player signing news, news that had already been reported in other sources. That's the signing of midfielders Ryan Smith and Igor Kostrov. Smith has had an impressive preseason and appears to have won the starting left sided midfield spot, taking the place of Claudio Lopez. From what I've seen of Smith him and Espinoza are going to cause fits for teams down the Wizards left side, it was almost a seamless attack no matter which of the two was going forward. Kostrov had been with the Wizards for most of the team's preseason impressing enough to earn a contract. At this point it appears Kostrov will be coming off the bench playing anywhere in the midfield for the Wizards.

Yesterday I reported on the Wizards potential signing of Indian international, Sunil Chhetri. That news has continued today as more places pick up on the story making it appear more likely KC will be signing the striker. Some of the latest news talks about how Chhetri has an out clause in his contract with his I-League team that will allow him to leave to join the Wizards. While I'm a little cautious of this move as well based on where Chhetri has played, unlike Rocastle, Chhetri has at least consistently played at the top level and has been offered contracts with teams at high levels in England recently, unlike Rocastle.

Finally, the Wizards have parted ways with another former player, as the team has waived goalkeeper, Boris Pardo. Pardo had spent the past two years with the Wizards while the year before he was a league keeper and trained with Kansas City. In his 2 years with KC, Pardo appeared in one game for the Wizards, the team's 2009 US Open Cup game against the Minnesota Thunder. The Wizards won the game on penalty kicks in no small part due to Pardo who stopped 2 penalty kicks in the shoot out to put the Wizards through to the next round. He won man of the match for that performance. Also released was Louis Crayton. Neither of these moves is really surprising after the signings of Jimmy Nielsen and Eric Kronberg, while Pardo and Crayton were fighting for a roster spot their chances went far down with those signings.

Kostrov Official

The rumors that the Wizards had signed Moldovan midfielder Igor Kostrov have been around for almost two weeks now. Today, the Star has word that Kostrov has officially signed a four year contract with the team. Kostrov has been with the Wizards since the beginning of preseason. He's sat out the last two preseason games with minor knocks, but is likely to compete for time anywhere in the midfield.

The Star article also talks about new goalkeeper, Jimmy Nielsen, who is set to arrive on Tuesday. Peter Vermes says that Nielsen is still only competing for the starting job and won't be just given it when he arrives. He also says that trialist, Louis Crayton, is leading the charge to become the starter at this point. Also on the topic of Nielsen, Vermes says that they have spent less on Nielsen than the team would have on Kevin Hartman this season. That would mean that either the reports out of Denmark that he was going to be making $235K a season are false, or that Hartman was wanting more than that, which I doubt.

Interview with Vermes

Today Thad from The Back Post has an interview with Peter Vermes that he's posted over on his blog. Vermes talks about the next phase of preseason, as he calls it, the "team phase", likely working to get all the new players integrated even more into the team and playing as one team. Thad brings up all the trialists that the team has had in camp and Vermes says that some of them have impressed some have not, some have signed, some they're still wanting to look at.

They talk about the team's newer signings, first, second round draft pick, Korede Aiyegubsi, who Vermes likens to Corey Ashe of Houston. Ashe is a hard working player who at times looks extremely impressive for the Dynamo.

He talks about trialists Igor Kostrov and Ryan Smith saying they are interested in both. He says that Kostrov can play on both flanks and is very attacking minded. Smith they are very impressed by and interested in.

Vermes also mentions the Eric Kronberg re-signing, and he'll be competing with the other keepers in camp.

Finally, Thad gets Vermes to speak a little about the collective bargaining agreement and how it affects their work on signing players. Vermes says that it's definitely been difficult but the team has tried to stay within a certain budget, but that it's hard with things still in the air as they are. It's another good interview with good information in it.

Even More Roster Updates

Thad over at The Back Post has provided even more roster updates on the Wizards. First he says that Igor Kostrov has not signed a contract yet, he says that Kostrov has been offered a contract, but at this point has not signed it yet although it is expected he will sign it.

The other news is that Wizards back up goalkeeper the past few seasons, Eric Kronberg has re-signed with the Wizards and is now participating in camp. Kronberg missed all of the 09 season spending it on injured reserve after having offseason shoulder surgery after the 08 season. Kronberg now becomes the favorite to be the teams back up keeper and push Jimmy Nielsen for the starting spot. During the 08 season, Kronberg was impressive at times filling in for Kevin Hartman during the Wizards Open Cup run that year. The highlight being a very strong performance in the Wizards penalty kick loss to Seattle in the quarterfinals. I'm excited to have Kronberg back, I hope he's coming in ready and can push Nielsen.

More Player Signing Rumors

The Wizards have continued to remake their roster this year and it appears that the Wizards have signed two new players. First, Ives Galarcep is reporting that the Wizards have signed another trialist, this time it's one of the Wizards two Moldovan trialists, Igor Kostrov, a 22 year old midfielder/forward who has been playing in Israel for Maccabi Herzliya, he scored 2 goals this season.

The other signing is being reported by Thad over at The Back Post, who's reporting that the Wizards have signed second round draft pick, Korede Aiyegbusi, who played at NC State last year. Aiyegbusi was late to preseason camp but has apparently impressed in his time there so far. I believe that both Kostrov and Aiyegbusi will both be taking up international roster spots. With those two, it gives the Wizards 8 internationals on their roster as the team already has Stephane Auvray, Pablo Escobar, Zoltan Hercegfalvi, Santiago Hirsig, Jimmy Nielsen, and Kevin Souter. That should leave the Wizards with 1 international spot left.

Moldovans in Camp

Along with his mention of the Ryan Smith tonight, Robb Heineman also gave us the names of the two Moldovans that are training with the Wizards right now. While he only gives us last names, with some searching, it appears the players are Alexei Casian and Igor Kostrov. Casian appears to have last played for Dinamo Bender in Moldova. Casian also has a video out on Youtube of some of his play as well (seen below). Kostrov also appears to have played with Bender, but has also spent time in Israel. From what I saw out at practice on Saturday of these two, they're both decent players, we'll see if either or both of them make the team.
