Miller, Ruiz Waived

Sporting KC made their second and third moves of the offseason today. Following the retirement of Jimmy Nielsen, the team today announced that they'd waived two players, defenders Kyle Miller and Brendan Ruiz.

Miller was drafted by the team in the 2012 Supplemental draft but never made a competitive appearance for the club in his two seasons. He did appear in the team's two friendlies against Montpellier and Stoke City, scoring the goal in KC's 1-1 draw with Stoke.

Ruiz was signed on transfer deadline day this year along with Jimmy Medranda. Ruiz, like Miller, never made a competitive appearance for the club.

Here's the brightest moment for either player in a Sporting uniform.

Fair Result

Last night at Livestrong Sporting Park, Kansas City played their second friendly of the season against Stoke City of the English Premier League.  With a team made up mainly of the Swope Park Rangers, Sport held their own against the Premier League side drawing 1-1 in what would probably be considered a fair result.

The first half saw both teams have their stretches of possession, but it was KC that seemed to be creating the better of the chances.  Despite Stoke's size advantage on set plays, KC's best chance early on came off a corner when Kevin Ellis got up to knock a header on goal, but right at Asmir Begovic.  KC's general style of playing in crosses wasn't working as well with the size of the Stoke back four, which forced KC to play the ball more on the ground and that led to the best chance for either team in the first half when Soony Saad let loose from about 25 yards out but ended up striking the post and the ball bounced back into play.  Stoke's attack in the first half left a little to be desired as the Potters were unable to put a single shot on goal in the first half, they're best chance was when Peter Crouch headed the ball onto the bar but over the net.  Crouch though was offside on the play.

In the second half, Stoke started to attack more and KC began to get pinned back in their own end of the field a bit more.  Still in the early goings of the half Stoke struggled to make much of their possession in KC's end.  Stoke got their first shot on goal in the 52nd when Jonathan Walters got behind the defense and was 1v1 with Eric Kronberg, but Kronberg was quick off his line and smothered the shot to keep the scores level.  Stoke continued to press and Crouch should have done better when he was gifted the ball about 20 yards out from goal by Ellis. Crouch though shot right at Kronberg who collected the shot.  A minute after Crouch's chance, Cameron Jerome had a good chance to put the first goal in but a nice diving save by Kronberg kept the score at 0-0.  The game looked destined to finish scoreless like last year's game against Newcastle until 83rd minute.  Substitute Michael Tonge received the ball on the end line and cut past Konrad Warzycha.  Warzycha grabbed some jersey as he went by to slow Tonge down.  The Stoke forward felt the contact and went to ground extremely easily, but the referee pointed to the spot.  Tonge stepped up and sent Kronberg the wrong way and Stoke had the lead.

KC looked to be headed to another home defeat as the game headed into stoppage time with Stoke's defense handling KC's attack.  Then in the 2nd minute of stoppage time after Stoke had possessed the ball, the ball was played back to Begovic, who was about 20 yards out from goal. He looked to clear the ball up field but didn't get enough height on it and the ball went directly into the head of Kyle Miller who was standing about 40 yards from goal.  Miller barely even moved towards the ball, but when it hit his head it looped back towards Stoke's goal and into the net tying the game at 1-1.

The goal was the craziest, flukiest goal I've even seen in person or on YouTube, absolutely crazy.  Still in the end, a 1-1 draw was a fair result for the two teams.  Both had chances but neither looked extremely impressive, although Kronberg, Saad, and Neven Markovic were impressive.

Wizards Man of the Match - Eric Kronberg - Big saves by Kronberg in the second half kept KC in the game.  He's starting to get back into form that he was for parts of last year.  He's going to want to get starting time sooner or later, and with Nielsen I'm not sure that's going to happen here.

Open Cup Final and Player Salaries

For those of you that don't already have tickets for the US Open Cup final a week from today against the Seattle Sounders, you may want to get them.  Today it was announced that the US Open Cup final for this year (and the next two after that) will be shown on Gol TV.  The station that most people have to get another tier on their cable provider to be able to watch the game.  Needless to say not too many people are happy about this.  Most people would even rather have an online stream readily available instead of having to deal with figuring out how to get Gol TV on their plan.  Word is that Fox Soccer (also a channel on another tier under most cable providers) was also trying to get the game for a national broadcast and that KSMO was trying to get local rights, along with 810AM trying to get radio rights but apparently the asking price from US Soccer was not one that they were willing to meet.  So instead soccer fans in KC (and around the US looking to watch the final) will either be contacting their cable provider, or finding an illegal stream.

While I understand US Soccer wanting to make as much money as possible, the US Open Cup final on Gol TV could be a bit of a step back for them as they look to continue to try to give the tournament more legitimacy.

The good news for Sporting fans?  The last time Gol TV had the finals was the 2004 and 2005 finals, and we remember how the 2004 one finished up.  If not, enjoy this great video that Sporting put out today.

Update Player Salaries

The players union today released updated salaries for all the MLS teams.  Sporting KC only had 3 changes to their list from the previous one in May to this release.  Gone from the list is Shawn Singh and his $33,750.  On the list now are new signings, Neven Markovic, who is making $90,000 and Kyle Miller who is making $33,750.  KC is still on the hook for Luke Sassano's salary at this point which is why he still appears on the list.  So far from Markovic I like what I've seen although I'd like to see a little bit more in competitive games instead of friendlies before making a decision.

Sporting KC Sign Miller

Sporting KC added another player to their roster today with the addition of Supplemental Draft pick Kyle Miller.  Miller, the 54th selection in the Supplemental Draft, is the 4th player from this year's draft class to be signed, along with Dom Dwyer, Cyprian Hedrick, and Shawn Singh.

Since being drafted, Miller has consistently been training with the team.  As a local KC kid, it's been easy for Miller to hang around and continue to train with the team.  He's appeared in a few reserve games as a guest player for KC as well.  Miller also becomes the 6th player with local ties on the team, joining Matt Besler, Seth Sinovic, Jon Kempin, Kevin Ellis, and Michael Thomas.

Sporting KC Defeat US U-17's, Kronberg Out 4-6 Weeks

Sporting KC's last announced preseason game is now in the books as the Wizards took on the US U17 team today out at ESPN's Wide World of Sports. Sporting took the lead through Konrad Warzycha who headed home a cross from trialist, Mozzi Gyorio. Shortly after KC grabbed the lead, the US team was level off of an indirect free kick inside the box. Rubio Rubin fired in just under the cross bar after a touch from Junior Flores.

Early in the second half, Sporting retook the lead, as Kyle Miller took a pass from Gyorio and slotted it into the far post making it 2-1. In the 64th, Soony Saad got on the score board firing a shot into the opposite corner making it 3-1. Shortly after Saad made it 3-1, he made it 4-1. Saad played Shawn Singh into the box, where he was fouled. Saad stepped up this time and buried the penalty kick past the keeper to make it 4-1 to Sporting KC.

Here are the highlights.

Kronberg Out

Eric Kronberg hasn't gotten much action so far this preseason due to one injury or another. Now he's going to miss the next 4-6 weeks due to a lower back injury. With the injury, that currently leaves Sporting with only 2 keepers on their roster, Jimmy Nielsen and Jon Kempin. Meaning the teenager is going to be Nielsen's backup until Kronberg comes back from injury. It's certainly a blow for Kronberg, who I was really hoping would really push Nielsen this year. With Kronberg in the final guaranteed year of his contract (next year is an option year held by the team), him impressing this year would be a good way for him to earn a starting job either with KC or elsewhere.

It's a huge opportunity for Kempin though, as he's now only an injury or red card to Nielsen from making his first team debut. And while he's a good keeper, I'm not sure he's quite ready to step up the way Zac MacMath did for Philadelphia last year.

The question becomes whether KC will look to put Kronberg on injured reserve and add a third goalkeeper for the short term or not. With trialist goalkeepers, Steve Spangler and Scott Angevine having been in camp since Arizona. It'd be possible that KC could sign one of them in the short term, or another possibility is that one of them could be signed as a league keeper and train with KC, similar to the situation when Andrew Kartunen was drafted by the team but then signed as a league keeper.

KC Select 4 in the Supplemental Draft

Today was the second MLS draft, there was no ball room in Kansas City for the draft though. The Supplemental Draft took place on a conference call and took about as long as half the first round of the SuperDraft. After trading for Michael Thomas' rights, KC only had 4 picks, 1 in the first and second, and 2 in the third. In the first round, KC grabbed Shawn Singh, a defender/midfielder from UCLA. Singh can play left back and would provide cover and compete with Seth Sinovic and potentially Bobby Convey in the left back position.

In the second round, KC looked to add some depth to their midfield by bringing in St. John's midfielder, Pablo Punyed. According to Peter Vermes, Punyed is a two way midfielder that can do well in the offensive half of the field with his passing. He'd seem to provide depth in the box-to-box position in KC's midfield.

With their two third round picks, KC went back to improving their defense. First they grab Stefan Antonijevic, a 6'6" center back from Valparaiso. Antonijevic provides a big body to compete for a spot on the back line. He also has spent some time with the Serbian U-19 team while he was in college. Never a bad thing to have a kid that has a little international experience. With their last pick, KC went with a local kid, drafting Kyle Miller from Rockhurst University. Miller, another defender, is a local kid who grew up in KC and spent time with Sporting KC's juniors team. As for why KC had to draft Miller instead of filing a youth claim on him probably is because he didn't spend 2 years in the Juniors system.

I do have to apologize to Miller straight away, because with me he's probably not going to get much of a fair shake. It's no fault of his own unfortunately, it's the situation around his selection. And it's all personal so I apologize. For those that don't know, my brother, Matt Kuhn was also available in the draft. I would have loved for him to have been selected by KC. Like Miller he spent time with Sporting KC's juniors team. Kuhn though ended up getting drafted 10 picks after Miller by DC United. Like Miller, Kuhn didn't spend enough time in the Juniors system to qualify as a home grown player. My club allegiances won't be changing, I still love Sporting, but (and I'm shocking myself saying this) I will be cheering for DC should my brother make the team (except when they play SKC). That all said, I also hope Miller proves me wrong.
