I made it out to the Wizards afternoon practice yesterday to see how the team looked with the season a little over 2 weeks away. Overall, the team looked sharp in their small sided drill they were doing when I showed up yesterday. All but 3 of the players are currently training. Two of those missing are long term injuries to Chance Myers and Eric Kronberg. The other one is Santiago Hirsig, who after training with the team down in Mexico has to wait for his visa from the US government before he can begin working with the team in the US. It would appear that Hirsig will not be in the starting 11 when the season starts on the 21st because of these issues along with his lack of game fitness. Still getting him in will be a big boost for the team, as he'll provide some good veteran leadership for the team.
Also from being at practice today, it looks like the Wizards two remaining trailists, Ferenc Béres and Chris Brown have been released. Béres had not gotten in a game since early in the trip to Mexico, and Brown had only one appearance in preseason with the team. For Béres, it was probably the numbers game in the midfield that saw him not gain a spot. For Brown, he appears to have lost the battle with Boris Pardo to back up Kevin Hartman until Kronberg is healthy.

Wizards Continue Early Success
The Wizards continued their early preseason success down in Florida today with a come from behind 3-2 win over the Chicago Fire. That's the good news, the bad news, is that in the first half, when the two teams were basically playing their first team, the Wizards fell behind 2-0 on goals by Brian McBride and Patrick Nyarko.
In the second half, the Wizards got on the board in the 49th minute thanks to Aaron Hohlbein who headed in off a corner from Kevin Souter. Four minutes later, the Wizards were level, after a combination between Davy Arnaud and Graham Zusi, Zusi was brought down in the box. Arnaud stepped up and put the penalty kick away. The winner came in the 70th minute, off another corner, this one by Zusi. Rauwshan McKenzie got to this one and headed it under the bar for the winner. Trialist, Ferenc Béres went the full 90 today.
Missing from the game were Roger Espinoza and Jack Jewsbury, who are still with their respective national teams, Adam Cristman, who sat out for precautionary reasons, Herculez Gomez, who is recovery from surgery, Akeem Priestley, who is still trying his luck abroad, and then Eric Kronberg, Doug DeMartin, and Matt Marquess.

Wizards Trialists
In today's game against the US U-17 team, the Wizards had two trialists see action on the field. The first, a Hungarian trialist, is Ferenc Béres, who according to wikipedia plays for FC Tatabánya in the Hungarian second division. Béres scored 2 goals today in the game. Tatabánya was relegated at the end of last season to the second division. This season, Béres has 5 goals, leading the team as Tatabánya sit 4th in the table. So is this the player that Peter Vermes saw during his trip to Eastern Europe last year?
The other trialist was goalkeeper, Kevin Guppy, a free agent goalkeeper from Cal State Northridge played the last 30 minutes of the game today. This past year, Guppy was a first team All Big West selection. He finished the year with a 8-7-4 record and a 1.12 goals against average.
We'll see if either does well enough to make the roster.

Wizards Begin Preseason with Win
The Wizards won their first game of the preseason today, as they beat the US U-17 team 7-0 today down in Florida. Hillcrest Road has write ups on each of the goals and the lineups for each half. In goal for the U-17's was Wizards' Juniors' player, Jon Kempin. Players getting goals today were Kevin Souter and Aaron Hohlbein in the first half, with Nelson Pizarro, Chance Myers, trailist Ferenc Béres (more on him later) getting two, and Michael Kraus.
Absent from the game today were Herculez Gomez and Michael Harrington with injuries, and Jack Jewsbury and Roger Espinoza due to national team duty. Also absent, but not mentioned specifically were forwards Josh Wolff, Abe Thompson, and Adam Cristman, and back up goalkeeper, Eric Kronberg.
